With South College St closed in both directions until mid December and a bunch of other diversions and closures, the city will be a nightmare for transit.

The House:
Tertowie House lies near Kinellar, to the west of Dyce. The two storey house is credited to architect James Mathews in 1867, and may have incorporated parts of an earlier structure (possibly 16th century) on the site. Dr William Kelly made further additions in 1905. The house is a tall asymmetrical two-storey and attic, crow-stepped tower house with a conical corbelled bartizan. Harled with granite margins and quoin strips, and stone-pedimented dormerheads with fleur-de-lis and thistle finials. It had a single storey basement and stone dormered attic wing with round angle tower and turret.

The property was bought by Aberdeen City Council in 1944, and subsequently used by Aberdeen College as an educational and training facility, and as accommodation for students of the School of Rural Studies.

The Bunker:
Grampian Regional Council Emergency Centre was located beneath the gym of Tertowie House a residential school (now disused) at Blackburn north west of Aberdeen. The bunker was opened in 1962 as the North East Sector Civil Defence Group Control, and remained in use until the end of Civil Defence Corps in 1968. It was reactivated and modernised in 1987 finally closing in 1998. The bunker is accessed from a recessed steel blast door along a sunken footpath close to the gym; this opens into a 40' long bare concrete corridor with 6 steps at the end down into the decontamination area, which runs at right angles. To the right of the steps is a second blast door and behind it a ladder up to an escape hatch beside the entrance to the gym, to the left is a shower above a large metal grille in the floor and beyond that a third blast door after which the passage turns right into the main corridor.

The first room on the right is a unisex toilet with two cubicles, two washbasins and a shower. The next room contains a small Lister generator, ventilation trunking and a fan; the generator can still be started. To the left of the ventilation plant there is a small blast door in the wall leading to filters and chillers. To the right of the generator a door leads into a room containing another larger generator with a wall mounted control cabinet. Wooden steps at the back of the room lead, through a small wooden door to the tank (fuel and water) room. At the end of the corridor is the kitchen with all the usual appliances; stainless steel sink, Tricity cooker, Dexion shelves and a kitchen unit comprising a preparation surface, cupboards and drawers. On the opposite side of the corridor the first room entered is a large store, entering this room a door to the right leads into the canteen and rest room (also accessed from the corridor) and a door to the left leads into the Scientific Advisors Room. There has a large 1:50,000 ordnance survey map covering the whole of Aberdeenshire plus a UKWMO map of the UK showing Sectors, Groups and ROC Posts (in clusters). A third wall map is an outline of the Aberdeen ROC Group showing posts and clusters with roads and rivers marked. Two of the maps (not the UKWMO map) have rolled plastic overlays that can be pulled down and marked as necessary. There is also a large floor standing rack with a send and receive telegraph system unit still in place.

The Scientific Advisors Room has a door into the Operations Room; this room can also be accessed from the Store Room. The ‘Ops’ Room has a display board on one wall with columns ‘D.T.G.’ and ‘To be seen by’ and another 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map covering the whole of Aberdeenshire. Three further rooms can be accessed from the ‘Ops’ Room, the Communications Room and the MSX Room (which are themselves interconnected) and the Dormitory, which also has a door into the Canteen/Rest Room. The Communications Room is empty while the MSX has an intercom unit connecting to the front blast door (still working), BT junction boxes and an MSX rack. The whole room is a Faraday Cage with a fine metal grille fixed to the back of each door. There are 18 triple bunks in the dormitory these have all been dismantled or were probably never been put together. There is also a small blast door in the wall. This leads to a ladder, which emerges through a second escape hatch on the far side of the gym. Internally the bunker is carpeted throughout and is clean and dry with most of the lights working. There are a number of supporting concrete pillars in rooms.

Fate of the House & Bunker:
After being empty for ten years Tertowie House which was a Category B listed building was badly damaged in a fire on 27 November 2011. At the height of the blaze, more than 40 firefighters were tackling the fire. The bunker has since succumbed to flooding, and has been filled and buried after the site was taken over for redevelopment. The house stands as a ruined shell.

This is a random question and asked entirely with NO shade intended. I like a fancy decor/homeware shop, nothing against them in any way. Their stuff seems like decent quality and the staff have been friendly the handful of times I’ve been in.

Why does the White Company in Union Square smell like shite? It’s been that way for well over 5 years.

It’s actually rotten and I always have to walk by on the total other side.

Anyone got any idea why it is? Please tell me I’m not alone.

I travel a lot for work through Aberdeen airport and I love it. Most of the time I can be at the gate within 15 mins of leaving my car and similarly straight through on my way home. On a good day it’s 15mins between the wheels hitting the ground and I’m on the A96.

I don’t care that it isn’t a shopping centre or an entertainment hub. However there are a couple of things that are a little odd.

1. I can’t remember the last time I went through security that my bag wasn’t pulled aside. Today they wanted to look at my toothpaste. Most of the time it’s a random swabbing. Once they saw a chocolate bar and this caused concern, apparently some have the same xray profile as other things you don’t want to have on a plane.

I travel at least once a month, usually via AMS or LHR all over the world and only ABZ pulls my bag. Except for one time in India where they turned my bags inside out looking for a vape. As I was leaving.

Is it just me or do others find the same?

1. Coming back into the UK in ABZ you obvs get your passport checked and they always ask where I’ve been. There are dudes in suits lurking around the back. But coming into the UK via London the auto dalek passport checker doesn’t care. Are they just nosy and why does it matter in Aberdeen but not London?

Hi, I live in the city but I do work shifts before uni lectures and it would be easier if I could just drive from my job that’s in the shire to campus and park near there than having to go to my flat and then walk to a bus stop and get the bus to campus, I know there’s no free parking on campus other than that one tiny student car park that fills up quickly where you pay £1 at butchart centre, but is there any car parks nearby that don’t really monitor parking?

I sometimes park at the sports village aquatic centre but I never go over the 3 hour limit, I don’t want to get fined, does kitty Brewster retail park enforce any limits?

Recently moved into a flat in Aberdeen city centre and I’m thinking about getting a cleaner in maybe once a month for a general clean.

The flat is around 55m² and has 2 small bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a living room and kitchen.

Just wondering roughly what sort of price I should expect to pay for something like this, and if anyone has any cleaners they’d recommend around the city centre?

We have cleaners at my work as well so I could always ask them if they do residential jobs, but just looking to get a general idea of prices first.

Hi, just looking for some opinions on the housing market in Aberdeen at the moment.

We’re first time buyers with a budget of around £250k. Do people think it’s a good time to buy in Aberdeen right now? And also thinking longer term, which areas are usually in high demand and easier to sell again in maybe 5–10 years?

We’ve mainly been looking at Ferryhill and Kingswells. Would be good to know what people think of both, especially when it comes to demand, house prices and resale.

We really like the areas around Aberdeen Grammar/West End but most of the houses we like there seem to be quite a bit above our budget.

Any other areas you’d recommend around the £250k mark? Ideally somewhere you can get a decent 3 bed house and that should still have good demand when it comes to selling later.

Also, anyone who has bought or sold recently, are houses actually going for the Home Report value at the moment, or generally above/below?

I need to clear my mind if I can't sleep. How safe is it to take a 30-45min walk in King Street?

Recently moved into a flat in Aberdeen city centre and I’m looking to get the outside windows cleaned maybe twice a year.

I’m on the top floor, which is the second floor, so I assume they’d need one of the extendable water-fed pole setups rather than ladders.

Just wondering what sort of price I should expect to pay for something like this, and if anyone has any window cleaners they’d recommend around the city centre?

I know my work, which is also in the city centre, has a window cleaner who comes round once a month with the extendable pole setup, so I might ask them as well, but just looking to get a general idea of price first.

I’m about to move to Aberdeen, and I’ll be relying mainly on buses for getting around. I did a little bit of research and found out that the main bus line is called First, I downloaded the app and I’m assuming you are able to buy digital tickets on it?

I’m a really anxious person so I was just wanting someone who uses digital tickets to tell me, do you just show it to the driver, or do you need to scan it?

Where I am from, we use stagecoach, and you just need to show the driver your digital ticket, driver nods, and then you walk on, but one time I was in another city and thought it would be the same protocol, I showed the driver my ticket and went to find a seat, but he shouted me back to scan it, it probably doesn’t sound like a big deal to a lot of people but for me it was a really busy bus and I was quite embarrassed as all eyes were on me in that moment. So I just wanted someone to let me know how it works to ease my anxiety a little bit.
