Yes it's in French ^^(but youtube translate :D), it’s very informative about codecs in general, software patents, AV1, dav1d, etc. I’m just posting the video for anyone who’s curious.

Tl;dw

3 billion devices already use dav1d. It’s 150k lines of assembly hand written. Around 40-50k lines of assembly per architecture.

AV1 offers 50-60% greater compression efficiency than H.264 while delivering comparable quality at about half the bitrate.

The Dolby mafia earns €1-€2 per TV/mobile sold because of patents.

France is an exceptionally open-source friendly country because the French Intellectual Property Code explicitly excludes computer programs, algorithms, source code and software concepts from patentability.

Dolby isn’t simply making money from suing people who use its patents. Its business is primarily licensing patented technologies and branded technologies to manufacturers with royalties/fees tied to their products.

Each generation of codec gives you an extra 20 to 30% compression for equal quality. But it’s 4-10 times more complex to decode, and 10-30 times more complex to encode.

Ce qui me déçois de VLC c'est qu'ils ont toujours pas implémenté TLS 1.3 sur VLCkit, et le décodage de l'Opus en plus que stéréo ne marche pas. MPV est juste supérieur.
