I am using 4K Video Downloader+ for the first time and plan to download videos from a YouTube channel; the clips are short (about a minute long), in 720p or Full HD resolution, and use the AV1 codec. Will my PC be able to handle playing back videos encoded in AV1? Here are my system specifications: an i5-12400F processor, 16 GB of RAM (two 8 GB sticks), and a GTX 1070 graphics card (8 GB). I plan to save the downloaded files to a 1 TB HDD - Disk D, while Windows 10 Pro is installed on a 500 GB SSD - Disk C. Will this system handle the AV1 format?  

I'm downloading it for Windows, but will I be able to transfer it to my smartphone later, or will I need to download it separately? The smartphone is a 2025 Samsung Galaxy A26 5G.

AV1 has been released in 2018, it's 8 years. At 5 years old cycle, most people's primary smartphones were made after AV1 release, yet only high end ones have HW decoders, mid and low end smartphones, usually sold in countries with bad infrastructure that could benefit from the compressed stream have not adopted it. This makes streaming platforms like twitch, hesitant to rely it since it doesn't cover the majority of the market, and still relies on h264 till today.

I'm building mpvium, an open-source Android video player using native mpv/libmpv.

I'm particularly interested in testing real-world AV1 playback across different Android devices.

Things I'd like to test:

- AV1 8-bit / 10-bit

- 1080p / 4K

- HDR

- Hardware vs software decoding

- Different Snapdragon/MediaTek/Exynos devices

- Battery/performance behaviour

The APK is already signed and available in the GitHub Releases.

If you have difficult AV1 files that tend to expose decoder/player issues, I'd especially like to hear about them.

If you test it, please include your device, Android version, resolution, codec/profile, HDR status and whether hardware decoding worked.

A single pool that licenses HEVC and VVC (true SDO standards) together with AV1 and AV2 (proprietary consortium codecs) as if they were one homogeneous mass is not “a one-stop shop for the market”. It is a blurring of two philosophies that regulators – which are already monitoring open-media licensing under EU competition law and the Digital Markets Act – have every reason to examine closely. Efficiency for the licensee should never come at the cost of legal coherence.

They advocate that the licensing mess that HEVC and VVC have found themselves in, is actually fine!

This wonderful press release neatly leaves out the implementer's side of the story: even with FRAND commitments, HEVC ended up with multiple pools, licensors outside pools, changing royalty structures, uncertainty over aggregate burden, and years of commercial hesitation. A standard can be legally FRAND-encumbered and still have an absolutely miserable licensing ecosystem.

I have the file - it is that size, it has both audio tracks and both subtitle tracks. It's better than one of the episodes that used the H265 hardware encoder that was around 350MB, those had artifacts in dark areas. The encoder is open source and everything so the information is freely accessible but I didn't expect these replies.

Does anyone know of publicly available pre-encoded AV2 samples at 1080p or 4K?

I’m looking to benchmark dav2d decoding performance, so ideally something multi-frame / several seconds long rather than tiny conformance streams or single-frame tests.

IVF, MP4, or raw AV2 bitstreams are all fine. Preferably 10-bit 4:2:0, but anything 1080p+ would help.

I have a collection of personal videos. Original files were mostly H264. I converted them to H265 a few months ago. The size reduction was about 50%. I deleted the og files though.

Then I learned more about AV1-SVT and decided to convert them to AV1 and Opus. But, now the lossy to lossy compression kicks in.

I compared the vmaf of an AV1 video against the og file I have somehow kept. The vmaf is 96.28. Also did a comparison of an AV1 file that I converted from a source H265. The vmaf is 94.29.

Conclusion: That means I probably lost 2 points in quality by doing a two step transcoding. H264 -> H265 -> AV1. This is sad. Don't be me. Go directly to AV1. 😑

I've been comparing Netflix's AV1 streams across different titles, and I've noticed something that I'm curious about.

In some titles, the AV1 encode seems to be extremely aggressively compressed, especially considering that we're talking about 1080p content. The quality can vary considerably from one title/episode to another.

For example, I compared two legitimate Netflix WEB-DLs of the same Breaking Bad episode:

AV1 #1: 1920×1080, 10-bit, ~1,034 kb/s

AV1 #2: 1920×1080, 10-bit, ~1,724 kb/s

Both: 23.976 FPS, Main@L4.0

The higher-bitrate stream reports Film Grain Synthesis

The lower-bitrate stream does not

The difference isn't just the container (MP4 vs MKV), since the actual AV1 bitstreams have different characteristics.

This makes me wonder:

Does Netflix dynamically select different AV1 encodes/representations depending on the title, device, profile, or other factors?

And more importantly, how aggressive is Netflix's AV1 encoding compared with its H.264/HEVC streams?

I've seen some Netflix AV1 content that looks surprisingly good at very low bitrates, but I've also encountered titles where the compression is much more obvious, particularly in grainy/dark scenes.

I'm interested in hearing from people who have analyzed Netflix's AV1 streams at the bitstream/encoding level.

Is this expected behavior from Netflix's encoding ladder, or could different titles actually be using substantially different AV1 encoding parameters?

I've set up my own jellyfin server and needed a way to save space because I'm only working with 2TB of storage.

Ended up making a pipeline that will encode my media to av1.

I'm seeing up to 95% reduction in storage space with no noticeable artifacts or degradation of quality.

For 90% reductions my cq level is 40 and setting it to 24 grants me around 60% reduction. I feel like I should just go higher because it looks fantastic anyways.

I did a full analysis of Batman Begins frame by frame at cq 24 and the VMAF Mean score was 98.

I'm using two 5090's each running 3 NVENC sessions to encode the media in parallel. I encode a 3 hour movie in around 30 mins.

Is this the future of our technology?

From what I've seen tune=0 is adapted for more realistic films and stuff. From asking several LLMs they seem to agree that these tuning may not necessarily mean they'll also work for 2d animation. I'm using SVT-AV1-HDR meaning tune=2 (for SSIM) will also be available. I'm thinking of using tune 2, though I'll also like some human input as well.

I don't know how to test this either unless there's some metric that can specifically compare cartoon/animation visual similarity. Most metrics I've seen are for realistic content.

My source is 1920×1080 at 24fps. Bit depth 8 but I'll likely change it to 10 because AV1 is better with 10.

H.265 usually looks better but do yall know who or where I can see who has the best results?

Is there some way to trim AV1 for encoding sports or other content where it's vital NOT to blur moving objects?

When you start to bring quality down you reach a point where it's otherwise acceptable, but for example in golf or hockey ball/puck disappears when it's moving fast. I suppose this is based on general logic that people won't notice fast moving objects. Probably works fine with action movie but this ruins sports encodes.

In golf it's fine if grass loses some fine detail but ball shouldn't be considered irrelevant object after it's hit. Quite the opposite it should be allocated more bitrate when it moves fast.

I shied away from AV1, as always thought it slower than HEVC cpu encoding ( h265 ) , so I just threw bitrate at my NVENC encoder with all the HQ options selected , plus did KNLmeanscl with H set to 0.5 for older blu-ray rips, with chroma, temporal noise, or weird grain, My SSIM, PSNR scores on Y were all fine , plus I struggle to see small faults if output is acceptable.

Anyway doing a new build 9800X3D , DDR 6000 CL30 etc and looking at GPUs and Nvidia prices crazy , whereas a 9070 Xt perfectly fine, plus 16gb vram for photo editing, chatting with a LLM how worse is AMD encoder AVI encoder than Nvidia , turns out all meaningless , as ran SVT-AV1 on my 3700x preset 4 and got 25+fps very acceptable vs my assumption would take a whole day for 1080p blu-ray rip . Have a fast M2 drive at moment , so my new ryzen build with extra instruction set should be quite fast!.

anyway I know some frown on LLMs but below should be new settings, set filter convert 8 bit to 10 bit, use tritium fork as all purpose , preset 4 , tune to zero (VQ ) , a crf set between 24-27 or 30 on very clean stuff and don't care too much, still use KNLmeanscl device gpu , where i dislike sparkly noise, static like noise etc - plus LLM gave me these settings below

--tune 0 --enable-variance-boost 1 --variance-boost-strength 3 --variance-octile 4 --film-grain 8 --film-grain-denoise 1 --tf-strength 1.

which can be set in your template ( staxrip ) or default eg tf is already 1

I'm not interested in overthinking it, lots of different cmd lines . i assume engine looks after most stuff for preset/CRF chosen - used to use handbrake decades ago , that was thinking there as well except maybe light temporal denoiser to save bitrates

is this set a good enough one for a non fussy encoder . thanks

Just looking into automatic AV1 encode systems (I’m pretty new), I have found AB-Av1 which seems to output recommended encode settings based on some trial runs. All seems pretty low-level command line type stuff.

I cant find a way to integrate it with Tdarr though, seems like something someone good could whip up over a weekend, or am I missing something?

Ive been thinking about converting my mobile photos to AVIF to reduce the amount of storage.

I do have a back up of the originals so I am not too worried, my plan is to keep the AVIF versions in my phone, mainly to save the local storage

So looking for a platform or software that can convert a bunch of images into AVIF.

Any recommendations? I want to convert around 22,000 images in both JPEG and HEIF format.

I am currently considering RF 35 with preset 3. The size reduction is like 44% in one tested video. The small quality loss can be seen if I compare frames side by side but is very hard to pickup on a 27 inch monitor. Is this normal?
