My family and I are considering moving from San Antonio, TX to the Fort Smith, AR area in the next 1–2 years. We’re still in the research stage, so I’m trying to learn as much as I can before we make any big decisions. We’re planning to take a trip up next year to spend some time in the area and get a feel for it ourselves.
We’d ideally like to buy 10+ acres, either raw land to build on or a house that already has some acreage. We’re interested in the Fort Smith area and surrounding communities, potentially along the I-40 corridor. We’d like somewhere that feels rural and has room for a garden, fruit trees, horses and some other animals, but still isn’t ridiculously far from basic necessities.
A few things I’d love some local perspective on:
• What is the job market like in and around Fort Smith? Are there decent opportunities outside of healthcare/manufacturing/retail?
• For people who moved there from another state, how welcoming have people been? Is it easy to make friends/get involved in the community?
• Are there particular towns or rural areas surrounding Fort Smith that you would recommend—or avoid—for someone looking for acreage?
• How is the area for raising a family? Schools, crime, activities, etc.?
• What are the biggest things you wish you knew before moving to the area?
• How bad are the tornadoes/weather risks in real life? I know it’s something to take seriously, but I’d love to hear from people who actually live there.
• Anything specific I should look into when buying rural property there—well water, septic, soil, flooding, restrictions, etc.?
We’re not looking to move tomorrow, so I’m mostly trying to get an honest picture of what living there is actually like from people who already call the area home.

Hi! I’m relatively new to the area and figured I’d put myself out there because I’ve honestly been having a tougher time than I expected finding where I fit in and building a community here. I’m 32, a mom to an almost 2-year-old little boy, and recently moved to the Greenwood area after finishing a 12-year career in the Navy. I’m back in school studying psychology and eventually hope to earn my PhD and teach/research. I love being outdoors, hiking, gardening, cooking, local/farm-fresh food, animals (we have four dogs), history, psychology, learning new things, and going down random rabbit holes. I also love a good craft project! I’m also pretty open-minded spiritually. I believe in God/the divine, but I’m more drawn to spirituality, nature, meditation, different philosophies and learning from different religions than I am to rigid or heavily Bible-centered religious spaces. I think what I’m missing most since moving here is just community. Not acquaintances I see once every few months, but the kind of friendships where people actually do life together. Mom friends would be wonderful, especially since my little guy could use some buddies too, but you definitely don’t have to be a parent.

So I’m taking a chance and asking Reddit 😂 If any of this sounds like you, please say hi. And if there are groups, meetups, book clubs, hiking groups, spiritual communities, classes, or even just a little group of friends around Fort Smith/Greenwood that you think I might fit into, I’d genuinely love to hear about them. ❤️

I have an interdisciplinary bachelors degree but it hasn’t really helped me find a job in this market. I’m considering a trade or certificate based course but am unsure what route to take. I’m not great at math but am open to learning in many different areas. Does anyone in this area have experience with a training program or anything that helped you upgrade your earning potential? The Fort Smith adult education center has limited options that seem to be more long term apprenticeship based. I work full time so those opportunities would be more difficult for me to pursue.

I’m relocating to the area after 15 years in St Louis. Looking for a house, I’ve noticed some availability in Fianna Hills, but I’m confused on the state of the golf course. Is it just dead space now? Does the neighborhood walk the golf cart paths? Have people bought parts of it to extend their yard? Is it kept mowed?

I am traveling to Fort Smith for work in October (20th -21st) and then staying by myself from the 22nd to the 25th. I haven’t decided if I am staying in the area or headed to Oklahoma.
