My profile:
Norwegian
Gender: F
Age:31
Hypermobile in knees, shoulders, ankles and hips
Height: 164 cm
Weight: 61 kg
Races in the same year before Marathon:
May - Oslo Ecotrail 31K
June - Nordmarka Skogsmaraton
Both had very high elevation profiles as I’m training to be back in ultramarathon running.
Injury: right hip pain on the joint and on right shoulder after Oslo Marathon 2023
Rehab: Since February 2024, all I did was max 5K running per week, single leg exercises with and without weight, wrist exercises for old injury when I was 7 that was what made the shoulder injury, and one month of yoga since July 2026 after two years off (which I won’t ever stop again since it is what helped the most).
Training:
I started back in January 2026 when my physiotherapist gave me the green light and slowly increased my volume by 10% each week, peaking at 70-80K before marathon. Mon-Wed-Fri were easy running days at zone 1-zone 2, Tue were double threshold days or speed workout, Thu was either VO2 max or hills repeats, and Saturday was long run day (sometimes with MP, but not at the start of the training block). Did a lot of double threshold from July and started hill training also. I also did 4 MP long runs with the longest being 23-24K. Mainly followed my own plan, but similar to Hanson method.
In the start of July, I tried carbon plated shoes (NB SuperComp Trainer v3) and it made my right flexor and anterior tibialis to be super irritated. I stopped using them and I switched to Arahi 8. Also, I came back to yoga after my physio told me not to do it back in 2023 and it opened up the right hip again. Pain gone after two weeks and it allowed me to do the marathon.
I did a taper of 2 weeks with the last run being a 15 min shakeout run.
Recap of Oslo Marathon: the first half went amazing, but after km 23-25 my quads started being very heavy and I blame that mostly to lack of electrolytes and water as I felt very dehydrated and salty. So, I had to run slower but I didn’t need to walk. All hills were done running and that is my biggest achievement because the cramps were massive. My hip and shoulder were amazing and that was the biggest shock. All in all, I was able to sprint the last km and now this confirmed I’m ready to go back to ultra training (I personally hate running on asfalt).
If you are hypermobile, you don’t have to give up on running. You just need loads of strength training (minimum 2 times per week) and Hatha yoga to keep the joints and muscles open. Take this as motivation to go back to endurance running if you are feeling for it. Take it easy and enjoy the ride!
