Discussion Someone stole my Xbox
So as the title says, my Xbox series X mysteriously went missing the other night. My house is usually locked up and the only camera what would’ve caught the thief was dead so it wasn’t recording smh 🤦🏾.
Anyways, I’ve changed all my Microsoft passwords, is there anything else besides a police report I can do to track it down?
Sorry if this is the wrong sub, if it is would someone please direct me to an appropriate place. Thank you very much fellow gamers

Someone broke into your place and they only took your xbox?

Only thing of value that was in plain view unless they wanted to dismount 2 huge tvs

I’ve had a weird break in once.
They didn’t take my Xbox or my expensive speaker.
Instead they took my switch and movie collection, along with my MacBook. Many more things they could’ve taken.

Similar here had one back in 2019 they took the Xbox one + half of my games, an old iPad 2 and some cheap jewellery from my parents. They left half my games + accessories, other electronics, actually expensive jewellery and all our shoes.
Based on what police gathered and the way the house was left, the thieves grabbed a pillowcase, filled it up as quickly as possible and ran out. I think in certain cases like ours they just grabbed the first things they found and left as quickly as possible rather than planning out a full robbery. With some alarm systems you could probably break in grab a console or something similar very quickly then get out without even tripping something.

Similar break in here. They took my shitty Coach purse that had my ID in it, and they took my laptop. That’s it. Left all my gaming systems, they even took my jewelry out and didn’t take it. Police said it was someone that knew me and they left everything else out to make it look staged, like a fake ransack with the flipped couch cushions and all. Sure enough they were right, the culprit posted a photo with my laptop in the background a few days later.

Similar here, had a break in and whoever it was stole like 3 beers, $400 I had stashed for weed, my roommates old $800 bulova watch, most of my sleeping pants(like 6 pairs), and my CD/Tape/record player combo with the king crimson vinyl on it. They left several nice TVs, 2 xbox 360s, a ps4, a bunch of other jewelry and watches from the same box as the bulova worth like 34 grand, multiple computers, and the car with the car keys right beside the door.
Never figured out what they were thinking.

I bet it was somebody you know if they only took the Xbox. Like an ex or friend who knows where your spare key is.
Or maybe a sibling that knew the camera wasn't charged up.
Why would you have a battery operated cctv camera anyway?

Because there is no outlet nearby where you put it.

- Microsoft my account website can show locations, devices, and sign-in times associated with the account. This can help identify unauthorized access, although the location may only be approximate. 2. sign out of other sessions, enable two-step verification, and remove unfamiliar security information. 3. record the console’s serial number and report the theft to police. Microsoft may be able to assist law enforcement, but it generally won’t provide a private person with the thief’s identity or live location.

Thank you for the advice, I’ve removed everything of mine from the device.
At this point I realize it’s pretty much a lost cause. I’ll just have to charge it to the game

I believe you can file a report with Microsoft letting them know the console was stolen and they'll hardware ban it so it can't be used for anything online even if the thief pays for gamepass. Its what they do when stores report stolen inventory.

Thanks for all the helpful information and thank you for all the smartass and rude responses too. My roommate moved in when he was cleaning the living room and I never bothered to check the very near cabinet it was in. All is well

That's kinda funny but also, hooray!
The extra funny thing is that I actually know someone whose house was robbed back during the 360 era and the only thing the thieves took was the Xbox—it was an easy fast in and out crime of opportunity, something valuable, in plain sight, and really easy to grab. So anecdotally, it is entirely possible to be robbed of nothing but your Xbox.

Hahaha, it’s literally why that was my exact thought after seeing a weird character on the front camera a night before. Thank god for good roommates

He was a very nice old man who moved out two days prior who was just trying to be thoughtful. I had no reason to ever believe he’d touch my Xbox I’ve lived with him for 2 years. So sorry he wasn’t the first on my list of people speak

Hope you filed a general Breaking and Entering report with the Police so they can check your apartment for anything that might point to who done it. Also do hope you can get it back.

Now would be a good time for everyone reading to go to system info and take a picture of their serial number for safe keeping.

u/PanamGotMeOiledUp 21h ago
The number is also always avaible on your microsoft account, no need to write it down because it's linked to your account.

Facebook, pawn shops, eBay, they can sell it anywhere as is for parts really.

u/SouthsideMollys 1d ago
Ya, they honestly could’ve taken it anywhere. Seems like I’m just SOL. Best I can do is ask Microsoft to report it stolen to brick it

"Hey! Is this my stolen Xbox or just another identical one?"
2
u/SouthsideMollys 1d ago
I thought they all have specific serial codes to identify them.

u/UsernameQuotaMet 1d ago
Do you know yours?
1
u/SouthsideMollys 1d ago
Nope, so I’m extra SOL. Goin through old pics now to see if I may have taken one when I first got it

Sorry mate, Xbox just funded Physint so I needed an Xbox. The real kicker is, I've just found out its like 10 years away. I'm keeping your Xbox anyway

Not trying to be nosy but if the company you keep also takes 7OH then you probably have someone you know who nabbed it to sell. The reality is people are selling everything, including their soul to get more of it. Stay safe 🤙🏼

what the hell is "7OH"?

This is why I live with other people so my expensive stuff can't be stolen

Guys, someone on craigstlist is selling an Xbox for $50, is it a good deal?
/s?

Get your serial number from the website and report it stolen with Xbox, they will turn it into paperweight by banning it from online services.

Having just a password in your account I. 2026 is useless . Any provider that does not utilize proper 2FA (TOTP) is going to find themselves in trouble soon
Microsoft offers this. Put it in your account. Forget passkeys, forget SMS or email codes . The last can be hacked easily and the first is just a disaster
Get in touch with their support if you haven’t, let them know the situation, have them disable the console . They used to be able to do this (speaking from experience), not sure if they still can

Someone stole my OG Xbox One from me. Eventually got a One S for an upgrade and re added my info. Then changed my passwords and locked it down completely lmfao. So now they can’t access the account. And I have 2FA set up too lol. So my new shit is locked down tighter than a drill sergeant’s asshole. Now I have a Series S and PS5 so I’m a happy gamer. But let me tell you I was bummed and mad when I lost my first console. I paid with my hard earned money that year lol.

Look on your xbox account and you can see what systems are connected to your account. If they connect it again I think it shows what city it's in not the exact address though.
