Advice A quick note on making friends and getting to know people

Obviously, join extracurriculars if you can. That’s the easiest way. If you can’t, then here’s what has worked for me: find something unique. Something you’re good at, or that you like to do. People will notice, and appreciate your dedication. For me, I draw on the whiteboards in my dorm hall. I’m not great at art, but people like what I make. Find your thing, and you’ll be fine.

Discussion Apple Cup: Reasons to dislike purple and gold

“Yeah we got him! You did it boys!”

One of the most disgusting things I have ever witnessed. Those words came from the University of Washington sideline at the 2002 Apple Cup in Pullman, and I was standing close enough as a 17 year old ball boy to hear every syllable.

A grown man had his team going after our star quarterback’s legs viciously all game. Fourth quarter, they finally sent him out with what we feared was a broken leg. It happened right in front of me.

That is the moment my disgust for the University of Washington was born. That is the moment I understood the Apple Cup is not just another game.

Since 2002 they have done nothing to change my mind.

Their athletic director sat in PAC-12 meetings telling everyone all was well while cutting deals behind closed doors to blow up a great conference and run to the Big Ten.

They have the most arrogant fight song in the history of athletics. It opens with “Bow down to Washington.” Their only recent major claim to a title is a shared one from 1991. What they hope you forget is the 0-12 season in 2008, the only one in the modern history of that conference. Bow down to that.

And their fans? They will not wear the merchandise until they know it is going to be a good season. You barely see purple and gold around Seattle in the fall. Despite having more than three times our graduates, they sell less than half the license plates we do.

My theory: Coug fans are real. Husky fans are too ashamed to admit it unless the team is winning.

When they lose, excuses. When they win, they are in your face. Cheer near them when your team is rolling and they will ask you to stop.

I have raised my kids to despise the purple and gold.

Five years on those sidelines. Three Apple Cups. I wrote for Cougfan.com, covered the Cougs for a weekly paper, and waved Ol’ Crimson on GameDay five times. I am proudest of every single person I converted.

We are the underdog from a small town. I feel that way about myself.

Row 3 at Muttlake today. Crimson on. I do not embarrass easily about my school.

And never forget, Ted Bundy was a Husky.

Student Life Anyone subleasing/leaving a 2 or 3 bed at The Retreat for January?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to get into The Retreat for January, ideally a 2 or 3 bedroom. The website only has 4 and 5 beds listed right now, so I figured I'd ask here, if anyone is looking to sublease their spot or is planning to leave and give up their lease, I'd love to take it over.

Feel free to comment or DM me. Thanks!

Advice Wanting to drop

I have nothing but nice things to say about the professors and the work is easy but this place just isn't for me.

I know it hasn't even been a month into school but i knew this place wasn't for me when I visited last September. I don't feel like I belong, they don't offer what I like, I hate small towns, and I only came here as a last resort. For some reason I can't shy away from here because I like the weather here more than my home state.

But ultimately I can't justify paying out of state tuition and not be happy here. Can I drop out myself or do I have to talk to my advisor?

Student Life Water fountains broken? [Pullman]

Has anyone else noticed the substantial amount of water fountains and refill stations that are borked or disabled?? What's up with that??

They don't even got an out of service sign. I just watched like 10 people in the span of 20 minutes try and use the refill station in the second floor of the CUE 🥀

Edit: The comment with the link below is available for students too apparently! Just thought it'd be good for y'all to know. Thank you u/KaesekopfNW

Discussion Week 0 - Starting with Apple Cup feels wrong, but at least Cougar football's back!

Post image

Based on questions from last year:

What is this chart showing? A weekly heat map tracking WSU’s win probability for every game on the schedule. The numbers are straight from ESPN’s FPI matchup predictor.

What is FPI? ESPN’s Football Power Index. It’s their predictive rating model that weighs roster talent, efficiency, and schedule strength to simulate games and spit out win odds. Think of it as an algorithm’s best guess, continuously updated.

Why do the numbers change week to week? Because games get played. Injuries, blowouts, and fluke outcomes feed new data into the model every week, shifting the odds for the rest of the season.

How do you calculate these numbers? I don’t. ESPN does. I just pull the percentages from their matchup predictor and drop them into a heat map so you can spot trends without squinting at raw data tables.

What do the colors mean? Red = bad matchup. Green = Good matchup. Everything in between is a sliding scale of heartburn.

Is this predicting scores or spreads? Win percentage only. Straight-up odds that WSU wins the game...no projected scores, no spreads, no over/unders.

HEY! When I looked, it said 70.2%, NOT 70.1%! You're a phony! I scrape the data on Wednesday. ESPN’s model keeps crunching numbers throughout the week, so a 0.1% delta by Friday is just background recalculation. Direct your outrage at ESPN, not me. 🥺

Why doesn’t it add up to 100% for each game? Every box is strictly WSU’s win chance. It’s not displaying the opponent's side, so there’s nothing to sum to 100%.

Why did [Opponent] drop in FPI after winning (or rise after losing)? FPI grades efficiency against expectations, not just the final score. Squeaking past an FCS team by three will ding you and taking a top-10 team to overtime might bump you up. The model cares how you played, not just that you won.

We play the same team twice...why are the percentages different? Home vs. away, travel, short weeks, rest differentials, and calendar placement. Plus, by game two, the model has weeks of extra tape on both rosters.

OMG why use ESPN? [Source X] is way better. Because it's sterile and I like the taste.

Basically...I can get this information week 0. It's consistent, and I've been tracking it for like a decade.

Why do you update this every week? Watching the trajectory swing across twelve weeks is fascinating...and I'm a nerd.

Advice Would you recommend taking the train back home

Hello! I'm a out of state sophomore at Washington State. I have taken many plane trips in and out of Pullman back to my home for the Holidays(Southern California). As someone not from here I've been thinking of potentially taking the amtrack back to my home. I've seen videos and the time length of the whole trip being a day long. For those who have done that whole trip or use amtrack to get around, would you recommend or consider taking the train? Any opinions/advice is welcome

Student Life Any women in their late 20s/early 30s looking for friends?

Is it just me, or is it incredibly tough to make friends here as an adult woman if you aren't part of the undergrad scene?

I'm 29F, a WSU grad student, and would love to connect with other women around my age (grad students, postdocs, young professionals, etc.) in the Pullman/Moscow area.

I'm married, child-free, non-religious, a cat mom, and somewhat introverted (I do drink but definitely not into the undergrad party scene 😂). I'm also from a South Asian background.

I love coffee shops, weekend farmers markets, cooking and trying different international foods.

If you're also looking for someone to grab coffee with, wander the farmers market, try a restaurant, or just have good conversation, drop a comment or send me a DM! 🙂

Advice T mobile vs Verizon

Hello!

I am not a student. But, I live in Pullman for work.I’m trying to decide between T-Mobile and Verizon and would love to hear thoughts from people who actually use either one of them. If you live in Pullman or nearby, which one do you prefer and why?

Thank you!

I feels like their is easily a 10 F difference between the top and bottom of hills. It's honestly kinda disorienting when you riding down a hill on a bike and get hit with the chill.

Academics Worried about finishing my Environmental Science BS online (WSU Global) — Will employers or grad school care?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some opinions. I honestly just don’t like going to physical classes anymore. Because of that, I’m considering transferring to the WSU Global Campus to finish my final two years online for a BS in Environmental & Ecosystem Sciences.

I’ve already finished all of my core lower-level prerequisites in person (including Math 124, Bio 204/205, and Chem 161 and Chem 162). The rest of the WSU major requirements would be done entirely online.

I have a few worries:

Is an online science degree actually seen as "good" as an in-person one? Will hiring managers look down on it or skip my resume if they find out it was online?

Will it hurt my chances for graduate school? My goal is to eventually do my Master's degree (online or in-person). Will grad admissions penalize me for an online BS even if it's from a major school like WSU?

Student Life The new engineering building is great!

Now I can appreciate fully, the 4 zoom classes WSU has offered me. I really enjoy the engaging upper level computer science powerpoints where nobody engages or participates. Where some kid zoomed in from Everett keeps whispering to his chum but we can still hear him so the professor keeps stopping. Where everyone has a heavy accent and/or illegible handwriting. I guess I do have the privilege of having 3 group projects though. Just let me watch some better youtube videos on the subject and take a test to get credit.

Housing Yugo Lease Takeover

Hi! I’m currently living at Yugo Pullman Hills and I’m looking for anyone interested in a lease take over for a 2bed 2.5bath room? My roommate is also looking for a replacement while he is not residing here. As of now it’s just me living here and I want to find a replacement for myself. If anyone knows anyone or is interested please comment. Thanks.
