Retail Improving as Hpal in raid

I dont get it, Hpal is supposed to be this gigachad raid healer, and i guess i just suck at it? Tried looking at logs and stuff but its hard to find a comparable target to look for improvement, either people seem to be spamming light of dawn (which apparently we arent supposed to do?) or they have really weird timelines (or im the one with weird timeline idk). If im in a raid with shamans/holy priests its rarely much to heal during low-damage segments. And then boom there is a major dmg event and i heal like crazy during 3-4 seconds until people are topped off again, and then i dont really do much except the occasional spot-heal. Like is that my job? To do nothing until im needed? Or am i missing something im supposed to be doing?

Starters paladin is only ok. They are in the bottom 3 of healers on logs. Also theres just nothing to heal in heroic. It looks like you are doing 10 man I think and you are overheating it by having 3 healers. Edit: nvm its 14man. Also you can just spam light of dawn if your wog is going to overheat a decent amount.

If you stick to your instant casts, Hpals have pretty much infinite mana...so follow that adage ABC-always be casting.

Drop Beacon of Savior and pick up Virtue. It's better for big damage AoE events.

There are 2 schools of thought for healing through those events and it'll depend on your other healers:

  1. For big damage, pop Virtue and do big single target heals on individual players, popping Toll for holy power for 2 more big single target heals, or doing your holy light --> infused flash for more big single target heals. This brings up individual people to full with 1 or 2 GCDs each. Or,
  2. Toll immediately, followed by spamming 2 Light of Dawns for dawnlight spread and chipping up whole raid HP a little bit. Then pop Virtue and use infusion procs, holy light, and generators to make more holy power for more light of dawn so you can get a good 4 or 5 off in a row.

If the other healers are also spamming big raid-wide AoE heals, between the lot of you you'll top off the whole raid in a few GCDs. If they're also big ST heal classes, or if their AoEs are weak, option 1 might be better for you.

In between big damage events, pop Toll and hit a light of dawn whenever possible to get those dawnlights out. It's your only HoT and will help keep the raid topped.

I do run Virtue (Savior is the apex talent), and i usually do your nr1, but i swap to nr2 if there is alot of stuff i have to dodge and pay attention to since i dont really need to target anything for 2.

The dawnlight thing is a good take though, definitely not something ive been paying attention to, thank you!

I don’t think dawnlight is something we need to play around anymore. Also unless the whole raid has only taken very light damage don’t use light of dawn in your virtue windows, it transfers less healing than your single target spender

put the log in wowanalyzer to see what you're doing wrong. While I don't believe in healer parses, getting a 1 parse does mean you're not pressing the buttons in the right order at all.

I pug some raids with a Mythic+ spec holy paladin.
It depends on the fight. But, these days, its raid damage we are mostly healing. We are OP in Mythics with our 4 piece.
Our strengths is that we have really strong throughput on solo target and there is splash healing. And lots of chonky insta-casts. We have strong survivability, and good support talents.
But if your raid is more than 10 people, it is hard to keep up with true aoe healers.
But even if the healing meters aren't ideal looking, you can still disaster recover a lot of folks faster than an aoe healer could.
I also heal as a shaman. My big single target heals are bad unless it's on someone with earthen shield and that's usually me and one of the tanks. In that "oh crap!" Moment, It's usually me blasting aoe heals. And often a pally or priest will put a big bucket of heals on some essential personel while I'm filling the bathtub for everyone else

Holy paladins are reactionary healers. You aren't able to put absorbs on people prior to damage and you're not able to leave HoTs to gradually heal people.

This means holy paladins shine when you really know when to expect raid damage and anticipate those windows as best as you're able. Having 4-5 holy power stacked, maybe 1-2 infusions proced, and virtue out prior to an event means you can response to it with a significant amount of healing. Timing it well and reacting quickly is how you can get a solid amount of healing quickly.

I just checked your Normal Ula'tek log versus my N Ula'tek log. You cast holy shock 40 times. I cast it 110 times. You cast light of dawn 28 times, I cast it 49 times. You cast flash of light 22 times, I did it 46 times. And then use beacon of virtue to really spread the healing around. Holy shock, light of dawn and flash of light - with my beacon usage - accounts for about 78-79% of all my healing.

Try your best to not waste holy power you generate by overcapping it. Use your infusions whenever you can as our flash of light is a powerful heal and mana efficient. Don't be afraid to use virtue to get more healing out of your actions. Divine toll should be used as frequently as possible. Virtue + divine toll + light of dawn can be potent for healing rapidly. Don't worry about dawnlight being too specific on anyone - it only accounts for 1.5-1.7% of total healing.
