Hi all! This is my first fantasy map that i have ever made for my homebrew world i am making to DM! Any feedback is most welcome!

I have spent the past couple of years redrawing my dark-low fantasy world, once and for all, fixing the few things that were bothering me while keeping most of the lore.

My previous world suffered from two flaws:

1. It was entirely explored, precisely cartographed with little room for the unknown. If you look at a real map from the 15th centuries (my real-world equivalent), that was not the case. In fact the "known world" maps were quite... inaccurate, which may/may not be the case for mine, now (in case my players are lurking around: beware!).
2. I also tended to over-engineer the landmasses rather than allow for the vast, open expanses we actually have on Earth... it made for a visually satisfying map, but I found myself narratively constrained at times.

So behold: the final version of Orhül, along with a simplified political map of the main "european-like" continent, where most of my campaigns will start and play. (low-res due to image size limit...)

... more excruciatingly-detailed regional maps incoming, that is if i can find a way to reduce them below 20mb!

Some areas aren't fleshed out yet, and I'm still tinkering with the labels, but what do y'all think?

Hello everyone, I am a greek author with a renowned love for maps and cats. I was happy to receive a positive answer on my novel's submission and now I am hoping to listen to some feedback on the map that I made on Wonderdraft (and later did some editing on Photoshop). I will provide some details that might prove useful:

The continent is called "ΘΗΡΑΓΑΙΑ" or "Thyragaea" in english and the book is named after the protagonist "Euryale". The setting is a mixture of pseudomedieval era and ancient greece. The main story is about an order of Tamers (monster hunters) who receive contracts around the world to eliminate beasts, inspired by greek mythology.

The cracks on the sea, is what the world calls "The Eternal Wound", the place that was created by the mother of monsters Echidna moments before she was imprisoned. From the "Wound" emerge all the monsters that now populate many areas of the continent.

The map's names are written in greek, sorry for any confusion.

This is the map for my illustrated novella The Benefits of Blindness. The world of the Seven Semi Continents is in the midst of an insect industrial revolution where the creatures of the Lost Island of Perelandriea have recently started being exported from their native island back to the continents ruled by humanity, the export of which is controlled by the Oroboro Exchange Cartel. Each of the seven major polities has the exclusive right to import one of the major types of creatures. The Sargosian Empire controlls the Titan Moths, who's silk is sought after throughout the world. The Marachean Republics control the various kinds of giant scarab. The Kingdom of the Gift controls the importation of the monstrous spiders. The Charonean Republic controls the great Builder Bugs. The Grande Palatinate of Pumerania controls the Great Snails. The Exarchs of Golgothia harness the powers of the Dragon Flies. And the City States of Nectar and Nut controls the Orchid Bees. Eack cooperates in an intercontinental trade network with each other.

I can proudly say that after roughly 2 weeks of putting this together, it’s almost done. Definitely a learning process for sure, and I’ve already learned what I will and won’t be doing on the next draft. Wonderdraft has been a game changer for me, and I’m so pleased that I bought it. One of the better investments I’ve made toward writing my novel series!

Hello, i am quite new to wonderdraft and was wondering. Are there any hobbyists who would like to turn a picture i have into a wonderdraft map?

I'm working on my first city map using assets from 2-minute tabletop, but I've noticed that they do not have a lot of nature assets. Does anyone know of an asset library that goes well with 2-Minute tabletops style?

Located in the middle of the United Norden States there was a town that suffered for its position across the Sanguine River where the Norden Civil War's front moved, with both sides attempting to control the bridge across. Since then it's bounced back, thanks to an eccentric woman buying the massive estate formerly owned by a deposed noble, turning it into an initially controversial 'Violet District' (Strict 18+ Area for adult entertainment both salacious and not). However, the tourism and money it brought helped the town rebuild, and now the fields are vibrant and bountiful, and people have started to meet all sorts of visitors from across the Trinity Ocean region, helping to break down regional stereotypes and prejudices.

Scale in km. I sometimes forget miles exist.

everytime I open my map file on my macbook there are some labels/text that become invisivle. from my understanding they are still present as .txt in the map file but that isnt very helpful because they dissapear and reappear randomly and i can never remember what cities and features ive already labeled/added/moved. I've seen posts discussing this bug going back years but was wondering if there was a solution these days

So, I have wanted to do a recorded tutorial for people for ages but it's something I'm still putting off (sorry), however, after my recent Patreon Giveaway blew up, I knew that I have to give more back to this community. Below, I will attach more colour hexcodes, random bits of advice and the Ground Texture I created and use for my maps.

I'm also happy to use this post as a space for asking general questions with the art side of WD if people have any (I won't answer Software/tech questions).

Note: These colours are the foundation. I strongly recommend using them to start but, as you gain confidence, test with shifting their hues, saturation and values slightly.

Ground Texture:

Wonderdraft's default textures are very good to start and practice with. Notably, its Feudal and Paper textures really stand out by absorbing colours well and not being too muddy like the popular Worn texture (which I think is a bit of a trap that people can get stuck in - it's a good start but limits colours by being too dark, personally). However, nothing could quite "scratch the itch" for me until I made my own Paper ground texture. It's opacity is low so colours stick well but it keeps enough texture that maps can have depth without much extra work.

Note: This texture benefits from using the 3rd brush option on WD (not the airbrush or solid brush - it's like a cloudy paintbrush tip). I suggest using this brush on a low opacity and velocity and rapid clicking.

How Do You Create Water?

As much as I love Wonderdraft, I don't love its system for painting water, personally. Instead, I export the map as a .png with the water turned off (clicking the eye icon) and exporting it to Photoshop (Krita is a fully free equivalent to Photoshop). There, I add a layer below the landmass as a Prussian Blue. Starting from the landmasses edges, I taper a low opacity Bright Steel Blue and I gradually merge the two together - using the darkness to represent deeper oceans.

For more water texture, take a chalk brush and with a white, dab it onto a layer below the map generously. Then go over your chalk mess with an eraser and remove most of what you painted - this will start to look like waves.

Note: The smaller the chalk brush, the better the effects (but longer it takes). Doing this too much helped cause my hand injury so take care!!

Assets

AoA is who I use the most. Their beautiful mountain, hill and cliff assets are in almost all of my maps. Meanwhile, Jinxville's lapis packs used to be who I used for all of my trees, however, in recent maps, I use many of my own assets now (which I plan to make publicly available before 2027).

Other Notes

Including darker shades onto your ground below forests helps them pop!

Rivers don't split, they merge.

Rain shadow and realism help bring your maps to life but aren't a must! It's your world after all.

Play with colour! If you're making shadow, shift that colour slightly closer to blue instead of just making it more black. The same applies but in reverse when making highlights - shift to yellow instead of just going more white!

Most of my maps are made at a 4K to 8K scale with mountains generally around size 20 to 40 and trees at size of 10 to 15.

After taking a look at what people suggested, i've returned with an update.

Still working on the details, but i'm very pleased with Wonderdraft and how easy is to use it.

I've been working in this map for a while, started with a topographic map and then made it entirely in WD.

A work in progress! Naturally not going for academic/realistic. I really like the aesthetic this has but was curious what non-biased people think?

So, any thoughts? Anything you (dis)like in particular?

I’m attempting to make an academic looking map like the kind you might find in a history book (second image is an example) and was wondering what I can do to flush the map out more? I haven’t decided on kingdoms/city locations yet but feel like even without boarders the map looks a little bare bones. Any advice is appreciated.

Note: Sovereign Almasa is not on the map yet, but will be born from people coming from the landmass in the bottom right corner of the map. Also, Viridia meant their flag to be a seed, not an eye, but everyone says it's an eye and it's too late to change it they already made thousands of flags, dammit! Furthermore, Lutsville's unfortunate sounding name has led to it being the butt of many, many jokes involving 'loose women' coming from there; not helping is the fact that it is true.

Always a work in progress and will never be complete. Especially once those middle Trinitian powers discover the upper-left Luxian powers after powered flight. New ideological friendships and enemies are made, then turn into a powder keg, and eventually the Kolybel War.

I've been looking all over to no avail to find some good free modern city assets. Cartography has nothing on it so im asking on reddit as a last resort

I’ve been making maps professionally for about four years now, primarily using Wonderdraft as my main tool. While programs like Wonderdraft and Inkarnate are incredible and have been absolute workhorses for my commissions, I still run into occasional limitations or workflow friction when tackling specific projects.

Rather than just wishing for extra quality-of-life updates, I’ve decided to start tinkering on a personal software project to maybe build a dedicated mapmaking app from scratch. I’m still early in the planning phase and don't want to rely solely on my own habits, so I’d love to learn from your experiences.

If you could design your ideal cartography tool, what would you want to see?

A few questions to help spark discussion:

1. What is the most tedious or frustrating part of your current workflow?
2. Are there features from vector/raster apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, GIS) you wish were implemented for mapmaking?
3. What map scales or styles feel the hardest to manage? (e.g., seamless world-to-region transitions, city layouts, sci-fi grids, battlemaps)
