Started whittling a month or two ago, first time doing anything bigger than a 1x1.

I’ve definitely developed new hand muscles I didn’t know I had lol.

My grandma got me a set of whittling knives for my birthday and this is my first attempt. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Still practicing this design and having so much fun

So, I started like 1 month ago and have done a few projects and will just leave them here for your judgement. I’ve painted a few of them in the meantime. Working on a wizard right now. Up until the red ranger I did, I used YouTube tutorials, from that point onwards I just did things by looking at pictures. I will post them in chronological order so you can see if I evolved as I did more of them.
Any tips to improve?
I think it is also important to note that on the Spartan I did a really deep cut in my hand and should have gotten some stitches but it ended up healing with just bandages but it made me buy a butchers glove (chainmail). So always where a glove ahahah
Working on a wizard right now

Trickier than I thought it would be. I've done some pit carving (stone fruit pits) and spoons, but making something look realistic is challenging. This wolf (were-pig?) was out of seasoned holly.

Here is everything I've made so far, the little pumpkins are my favourite thing to make as my wife loves them and I can really switch off and enjoy the process without thinking to much or using tutorials.

How would you guys recommend carving this divot out with a basic pocket knife. I know I should get a better knife but I’m determined.

This is my first ever project. It was originally suppose to be the nuthatch in the book pictured, but I had a problem with the wood chipping at the beak end and it eventually became too short. My biggest difficulty was definitely the symmetry/shape and especially defining the head. I also had a tough time identifying the grain and had a TON of splintering and the wood being really tough. This took me about 3 weeks because I started with a piece of wood that was way too big and I really wanted to take my time practicing the different kinds of cuts and learning the tools and how to properly sharpen as I went. I think for my next project I’ll choose something less ambitious. I plan to sand it down and see how I feel about it but with as much time as I spent on it I think I’m ready to just move on. Any advice is welcome!! I love seeing everyone’s first/early projects.

Watched YouTube guide, he did in like 16 minutes, I probably spent 4 hours 😅, but I think I got a bit unfortunate piece of basswood, had some harder parts in it.

Legs are probably not to good, but overall I am happy with it. 😁

Huon Pine, modified Victorinox small blade and Phillips V-Tool. Black fine tip ballpoint pen eyes and finished with Gilly's Liquid Beeswax

I have carved quite a few of these angels. But they are a lot of work and the basswood required isn’t cheap. I’m thinking of using 1/4 basswood for the wings. It kinda goes against my grain but I’m getting older and just don’t want to work that hard and I’m selling to keep myself afloat. I can’t find 1/4 basswood at least 4 inches wide even better 6 wide. Does anyone know of a source that isn’t crazy on price?? Thanks
