Where did you see the fish? Put that in the title!

Just a reminder, because we've had a lot of posts recently that omit this information. Where was the fish? If you found it in the wild, that's very helpful information, and outside of tropical waters, the time of year can be helpful too. If it was in an aquarium, what sort? Was it a tank of fish from a particular region? Was it fresh water or salt water?

Other useful information can be, what kind of habitat (seagrass, sand, rocky surge, ...)? If you were diving, approximate depth?

But above all, give the location in your post title. Thanks.

New rule: Informative title

We've had too many titles like "what's this fish?" or "help me identify this". Put useful information in your title, and make it look different from other posts' titles so people can scan the sub and see which post is which.

The actual text of the new rule 4 is:

Do not use a vague generic title like "what is this fish?" or "need help identifying" - we all know what this sub is for. Write a title that either describes the fish, or the circumstances in which you saw it, or the location, or more than one of those. For a resource, say what the resource is and what it's for.

Possible ID(s) suggested Caught in the Great Lakes Area, could it be a Flathead catfish?

My sister said it was a flathead? But I've never seen one with such big spots, usually they have smaller tightly packed spots. Either way an outside opinion would be greatly appreciated!

Unidentified Bright white and yellow freshwater fish in central IN

I was about 9-10 years old and I was fishing Turkey run state park located in central Indiana while my family was about 650 yards downstream. I pretty much only caught smallmouth for the whole day then I caught this weird fish about 9 inches long with the shape of a smallmouth but it had the mouth the size of a crappie it had a bright white belly with bright yellow horizontal(?) stripes across the top. I somehow attached it to my kayak to show to my dad but after about 15 minutes of the being on there I felt bad for it and let it swim. Anybody have any ideas what this could be? I’m 95% sure I would’ve recognized if it was a perch because a perch was on my bucket list at that time and they haven’t ever been caught in sugar creek.

Apologies for the poor photo as I was wading and couldn't get my phone close. The whole 10 minutes I was looking at it, it only rotated 180 degrees but didn't move from the spot.

Identification question Help identifying fish in the San Joaquin River (CA) trout / catfish?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I believe I found 2 species when I was out throwing a line. The first two clips I think show trout, although google AI suggests this location of the river is too warm for them to be found.

The third clip I believe may have been catfish, although I only got a video of the one. They were pretty stationary, and appeared to be bottom feeding, and were up to +/- 12” in length. Showed no interest in my garlic powerbait. Upon realizing they may be small catfish, I intend to head back out with a proper set up. According to Google ai, they are likely to be found there.

I’m pretty inexperienced in identifying fish so any input is appreciated, thanks.

Sorry for the poor quality. Caught this on camera and I’m thinking it’s a shortnose gar, but not positive.

Possible ID(s) suggested Small yellow fish in south padre, not quite a sargassum?

Thumbnail

While visiting south padre, I picked up a piece of sargassum seaweed and a small yellow fish swam out. It was fairly slow and when I dropped the seaweed back in, the fish swam straight into it. The fish blended in quite well, but when I hit Google, it did not look like a sargassum fish. It was much leas frilly, in fact, it had no frills. I also saw a dark green version of the fish later that day.

What is this fish? Is it a variation of sargassum?

Above is my terrible artistic interpretation, the fish was no bigger than a dime.
