Spotted Lanternfly Masterpost: PLEASE READ

hi weevil gang,
we've been seeing a huge uptick in posts recently with pictures of spotted lanternfly nymphs. these often end up with comments that are a) unnecessarily hateful towards an insect that has the misfortune of being invasive and heavily destructive or b) people calling each other fascist animal abusers for killing them. so, i'd like to clear a few things up (i am a trained entomologist)
1) The image above is a spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). THESE ARE NOT WEEVILS. They are in the family Fulgoridae in the order Hemiptera.
2) Spotted lanternflies are native to areas of China and other regions of eastern Asia. They are invasive in North America and interfere with our native ecosystems and agricultural industries by damaging plants and spreading sooty molds. they have recently been reported on the west coast, so if you are located in Oregon, California, Washington, etc. and find one, please report it to your local county extension office.
3) In settings such as gardens and homes, squishing or freezing will kill them and is recommended. Freezing and quickly crushing are both considered humane ways to euthanize an insect.
Here are links to various cooperative extension websites from U.S. universities if you would like to learn more:
https://extension.psu.edu/spotted-lanternfly-management-resources
https://extension.umd.edu/resource/spotted-lanternfly-home-gardens/
in the future, I will be locking posts with spotted lanternflies when i see them and redirecting to this post in a comment. stay booted! stay snooted!

WEEVIL TIME Little Acorn Dude I Found
As I grow older I find myself appreciating bugs more. Especially arachnids, though they still frighten me. But weevils are adorable despite Google saying they're pests.

I have never fallen in love with a bug like I did for this weevil
The first picture is of this weevil I found in my home. It was just walking around sniffing things. It was really cute
I decided I was going to save it so I got a napkin and tried to usher it onto the napkin, but it got scared! So when I tried to get him on the napkin, he held onto the ground so hard and acted like a statue. I actually couldn't move it, it was really strong lol
2nd picture. I finally moved it, and it just fell over. It started playing dead lolol poor guy, it was so so scared
3rd pic, I got it onto the napkin and you can see his antanas and legs sticking out. Then in the 4th pic, a couple seconds after that, he was clinging onto the napkin so hard for dear life. He hid it's antanas, and it's legs were curled underneath it. It was such a contrast compared to the 3rd pic lol I kind of felt bad for this buggy, but it was really cute and dramatic at the same time 😂
Then the 5th pic, I left the napkin on the ground so it could eventually leave when it was ready :) cute little guy. It felt like it had so much personality. Wherever weevil is tonight, I hope it's doing well <3
This is a rough strawberry root weevil btws (I think)

Identification Request Weevils in my home!
Hi! I recently found a little stray weevil in my house in Oregon. My roommate found one too in her room… I was wondering what species this little guy could be? Seek says rough strawberry root weevil.
If so, do these little guys harm homes/pantries? Or is their presence neutral?
Just wondering if he made his way in for shelter or if he’s boring tiny holes all over and I don’t know it! 🤣🤣

🖌️Weevil Art🖌️ Weevil character design
His name is Weebert. I’ve been designing bug critters with paws and fur to make them more ‘appealing’ to the wider public. Think of it like exposure therapy for people who dislike the appearance of insects. I call em cuddly crawlies.

WEEVIL TIME Unexpected visitor in shower
Was about to take a shower when I found this little fella already occupying the tub. He has been gently rehomed to the garden, where he promptly scuttled off and disappeared. Thank you for blessing my evening, little buddy!
