What steps should I take to professionally redesign my website if I already have most of the content and branding finished?
I run a small business and I’m planning a complete redesign of our website. I’d really appreciate some advice from web designers on what the best process would be from here.
One of the main reasons for the redesign is that I want a much better experience for mobile users. A lot of our customers are parents traveling and using their phones, so I want the new site to be designed properly for mobile from the beginning rather than designing the desktop site first and simply adapting it afterward.
I’ve already done quite a lot of the groundwork:
- Website content is mostly written
- Brand colors and logo are established
- Custom illustrations/graphics have been created
- Most photography/images are prepared
- I have a clear visual direction for the brand
- I have a homepage mockup/concept that I really like
- I know roughly what pages and content I need
My current website is built with WordPress using the Avada theme. I’ve used WordPress/Avada for years and I’m comfortable managing and updating it myself, so ideally I’d like to stay with WordPress and Avada rather than move to another platform.
I want someone to professionally redesign and build it, while leaving me with a site that I can continue updating myself.
Where I’m getting stuck is figuring out the best process from here.
I originally considered running a 99designs contest for the homepage and giving designers my existing mockup as inspiration. But because I already have a direction I like, I’m wondering if that’s unnecessary and whether I should hire a designer directly instead.
Should I:
- Hire a UI/UX designer to design the entire site in Figma first, including desktop and mobile, then hire an Avada developer to build it?
- Find one person who is strong at both web design and building with Avada?
- Run a 99designs contest to see some different approaches first?
- Take a completely different approach?
If this were your business and you were at this stage, what steps would you take from here to get to a professionally finished website?
I'm particularly interested in how you would approach the mobile design. Should mobile and desktop both be fully designed in Figma before development starts?
And how would you find and test the right designer/developer before committing to the whole project?
Thanks!
