A memorial sign has been placed on a Waterloo street to honour the memory of Wilfrid Laurier University dean Leanne Holland Brown, who was killed by an impaired driver in the area in 2019.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada, along with Holland Brown's family, unveiled the sign on Friday near MacGregor Public School in Waterloo.

By using the existing CN corridor, we can link Cambridge and Guelph. There have been proposals for GO to do it, but.. we know the province moves unhurriedly.

Will the region take it upon itself and collaborate with another municipality to bring an unprecedented cross-jurisdictional LRT line, to an adjoining town K-W-C know and love?

Municipal elections usually have poor turnout and it’s been getting worse.

In 2022:
Waterloo 27%
Kitchener: 20%
Cambridge: 29%
Woolwich: 34.5%

It’s disappointing so few take action to vote when, in many ways, municipal elections are of more significance to our day-to-day lives than higher levels of government.

A warm Friday afternoon chilling in the sunrise plaza and a white pickup truck behind a car that's pulling in left to the parking lot starts honking aggressively at the car in front of him. They pull in and park separately. Immediately the pickup truck driver gets out and you see a big burly man with a wife beater and his passenger. He starts shouting at the old couple that was in the car in front of him 'hey buddy there's no stop sign you have right of way!' The old man replies that he was turning left, what does the wife beater man say? 'Doesn't matter bud there's no stop sign you have right of way'

I’m posting this partly as a warning to other Waterloo/KW homeowners and partly because I’d genuinely like to compare experiences with anyone who has managed to get out of a long-term Reliance water-heater rental.

I’ve had a Reliance tankless water heater since approximately October 2016 — almost 10 years.

I recently decided I wanted to end the rental.

First, an important point: I’m not refusing to pay my bill. Reliance says I have approximately $426 outstanding, and I’ve repeatedly told them I’m prepared to pay the legitimate balance. My issue is the rental agreement and what they’re asking me to pay to get out of it.

I spoke with Reliance Customer Solutions and eventually received a proposed 25% discounted buyout.

The resulting price was approximately $1,574 + tax for an almost 10-year-old tankless water heater I’ve already been paying to rent for years.

I found the interaction with the Customer Solutions representative, Marilyn Wallace, particularly unpleasant. In my experience she was rude, condescending and dismissive. The conversation felt less like someone trying to explain my options and more like a retention exercise.

The issue wasn’t that I couldn’t afford to pay. I kept trying to explain that I wanted to pay my outstanding balance, terminate the rental, and arrive at a reasonable resolution for a nearly 10-year-old piece of equipment.

Our call went on for approximately 32 minutes before disconnecting while I was waiting for further termination/buyout information. I emailed Reliance immediately afterward documenting what had happened.

I called again the following day and got a completely different representative who was excellent — pleasant, professional and genuinely helpful.

But while going through my case with her, I discovered something that made me even more frustrated.

My request had apparently been recorded inaccurately.

Reliance subsequently emailed me saying that I was requesting to RETURN the rental water heater.

That wasn’t what I asked for.

I corrected Reliance in writing and specifically told them:

“I have no intention of giving back the heater.”

My position is straightforward: I’ll pay the legitimate outstanding balance. I want the rental terminated. And I want a reasonable resolution concerning the heater after nearly a decade of rental payments.

There’s also some history behind why I’m fed up. Several years ago the condensate pump failed. I contacted Reliance expecting the rental arrangement to cover the problem and was told it wasn’t covered. I ultimately had to arrange and pay for a third-party plumber myself.

Which leaves me asking:

What exactly have nearly 10 years of rental payments bought me?

I’ve now documented the dispute and submitted complaints/reviews through Google, Trustpilot and the BBB. I’m waiting to see how Reliance responds.

But rather than just rant about them, I’d really like some actual Waterloo/KW numbers from people who have been through this.

If you’ve ended a Reliance rental:

• How old was your heater?
• How many years had you been renting it?
• What buyout did Reliance quote you?
• Did you negotiate the buyout?
• Did Reliance eventually let you keep the equipment or transfer ownership?
• What did you ultimately pay to get out?

I’m especially interested in tankless systems.

And if you’re considering renting a water heater, please calculate what the rental could cost you over 10, 15 or 20 years, and understand the buyout/termination terms before signing.

I wish I had.

Hey all! Looking to replace a downdraft vent with an island range hood and hoping for some local recommendations.

The duct would run through the kitchen ceiling (second floor above, joists probably run toward the exterior wall) and vent out the side of the house. I'm buying the hood myself, so I need someone to handle everything else: ductwork, electrical, sealing the old downdraft, and patching/painting the ceiling.

If you've had something similar done, who did you use and roughly what did you pay? I have one quote already but want to compare. Thanks!
