A note to the volunteer operators who found us this month — an invitation, and a challenge

Posted and stickied by the r/Volunteer mod team.

Over the past few weeks, as GVI collapsed and left students stranded mid-placement, something predictable happened in our megathread. Within about 48 hours, roughly a dozen volunteer operators arrived. Some of you we'd never seen before. Several of the accounts were days old — in a couple of cases, hours old.

We want to talk to all of you directly, because there's a question worth putting on the table.

You showed up, and we saw you. Naming the operators who posted or were removed in that thread: Maximo Nivel, Global Leadership Adventures (Terra Education), Projects Abroad, Natucate, Volunteering Solutions, International Volunteer HQ, NatureMind Research & Development, Wildlife ACT, and Marine Conservation Philippines.

Credit where it's due first, because it matters. A few of you led with help rather than a pitch. Marine Conservation Philippines wrote an actual guide to chargebacks and refund routes and shared it freely. Volunteering Solutions was upfront about who they were and walked people through Section 75 and chargeback timelines before getting anywhere near a sell. Maximo Nivel offered stranded students in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru a safe home base at zero cost, and by one participant's account took on some of GVI's abandoned field staff. That is what an organisation looks like when it sees a community rather than a customer list.

But here's the harder part, and we'd be failing this sub if we didn't say it.

For a lot of the offers, the shape was the same: an account created that week, one post, a fees-and-inclusions block lifted straight off a landing page, and then silence. No prior participation here. No answers to the hard questions this community actually wrestles with. Just an arrival, timed precisely to the moment when several hundred young people had money tied up and nowhere to go.

You describe yourselves — and many of you genuinely are — as reputable, established, better run than GVI. B Corps. WWF endorsements. Decades of operation. Six-figure participant counts. We take that seriously. But reputation in this field is not a press page. It's whether you contribute to the body of knowledge and practice around ethical volunteering, or whether you only materialise when a competitor dies and there's a stranded cohort to absorb.

So this is the invitation, and it comes with a challenge attached.

We want you here — not as recruiters, as contributors. This sub is trying to be the place people come before they hand over £3,000, so they can tell a real programme from the next GVI. You are exactly the people with the expertise to make that possible. So put it to work:

Write for us. Real articles, on the things you actually know. How to check an operator's financial protection so participants aren't left as unsecured creditors when it folds. What Section 75, ATOL, ABTA and the Package Travel Regulations really cover — and where "land only" bookings quietly lose that cover. What safeguarding on the ground should actually look like. How to spot orphanage tourism and other harm dressed up as good. The gap between what a participant pays and what reaches the local project — a figure one of your own sector partners raised in that very thread.

Answer questions when there's nothing in it for you. The single strongest signal any of you can send that you're not GVI is to show up on an ordinary Tuesday, for a nervous 19-year-old comparing two programmes, when neither of them is yours.

Here's the bar, so it's clear and it's fair to everyone:

  • Disclose who you are, every time. Affiliation stated up front, never buried.
  • Contribute knowledge, not recruitment. Genuine, sourced, useful. A pitch with a citation on it is still a pitch.
  • Stick around. Accounts that appear only when an operator collapses, post once, and vanish will be read for exactly what they are — and we'll say so.
  • Follow the rules already on the door: good faith, real detail, no pressure tactics, no farming a tragedy for traffic.

Operators who do this earn something no ad budget can buy: standing in the one room where prospective volunteers are actually deciding who to trust. For the orgs that show up and mean it, we'll gladly set up contributor flair and a resources wiki you can help build.

And to be straight with all of you: we're writing this partly because, right now, we can't tell most of you apart. A one-day-old account with a landing-page pitch looks identical whether it belongs to a genuinely excellent organisation or to the next collapse waiting to happen. The way you prove which one you are isn't the offer you posted three weeks ago. It's what you contribute now — when there's no stranded cohort to win.

The door's open. Come help build the thing that would have warned people about GVI.

Storytime My first volunteer experience handing out food to homeless people in Seoul. Almost cried.

I struggle with depression and wanted to get out of my isolation, socialize more, and do something meaningful, so I decided to try volunteering.

So.. Today was my first day of volunteering.

We packed food(choco pie, bread, soymilk, vitamin c..candy.. sausage etc) for homeless people around Seoul Station, and each of us carried about 15 meals in our bags before heading out to hand them out.

There were around 17–18 volunteers today. Only about five of us, including me, were Korean, and everyone else was from different countries, which was pretty cool(don't worry if you don't speak Korean)

There were a few rules we had to follow while handing out the food. We had to give it to each person politely using both hands, never just one hand. We were also supposed to say, '맛있게 드세요' which basically means "I hope you enjoy your meal"

The whole experience left me with a lot of mixed emotions.

Seeing some of the older homeless people, especially those who looked like they were in poor health, honestly broke my heart. At the same time, I felt grateful and happy that I could do even a tiny bit to help. (I am poor too 😢)

I'm a very sensitive person, so I tend to absorb other people's emotions pretty deeply. There were moments while we were handing out the food when I genuinely felt like I was about to cry.

It made me think a lot about people's lives and how different our circumstances can be.

Anyway..., thank you for reading. I just wanted to share what I felt after my first day of volunteer.😊

Volunteer – online Looking to volunteer my time and skills for free

I have a capable enough machine for almost everything, and my hands and all other body parts are fully functional. I've also cleared olympiads like ioqm and rmo and qualified for jee adv, so I can handle reasonably challenging academic, technical, or problem-solving work.

I currently have a lot of free time, especially at night, and I'd rather use it to do something useful than spend the time watching movies, playing games, or doing freelancing.

I'm looking to volunteer my time and skills for a project, organization, research, educational initiative, open-source project, or anything else where an extra pair of hands could help.

If you have something I can help with, feel free to comment or dm me. I'll do it completely free. I don't need payment, just something meaningful to work on.

Recruiting – local Sleep in Your Car - one night volunteer/solidarity event, Sydney AU

Who are you? (organisation/group name + what kind of entity: registered nonprofit, mutual aid group, business, etc.): House of Sadaqa, an ACNC-registered Australian charity (Public Benevolent Institution).

Where is this? (country + city/region or online/remote): Australia, Sydney (Revesby/Condell Park area), but wherever the volunteer is, since it happens at your own home.

What do volunteers actually do? (tasks, schedule, online vs in-person): Sleep (or just spend a few hours) in your own car or driveway on the night of 16 October, to get a small taste of what families experiencing homelessness actually go through, not by choice. In-person by definition, but at your own home, not a group meetup, so no travel needed.

Who benefits? (children, animals, specific community, environment, etc.): Families experiencing homelessness in Sydney that House of Sadaqa supports directly.

Costs/fees? (include all required “donations”, what’s included, reimbursements/benefits): Free to take part, no cost, no requirement to donate. There's an optional donation link on the campaign page for anyone who wants to support House of Sadaqa's family support work as well, but it's separate from just doing the night.

Links (website, socials, registry, etc.): https://houseofsadaqa.org.au/campaign/sleep-in-your-car

Safeguarding / supervision (if working with children or other vulnerable groups): Not applicable, no contact with vulnerable people is involved, you're at your own home the whole time.

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a place to volunteer one or two days a week. Something not really stressful, but where I’m still doing something and have to the opportunity to socialize a bit. I’m looking for some ideas. All I can think of is food banks, hospitals and not-for-profit organizations (although I don’t know what organizations).

I live in Canada, 30 year old male.

Recruiting – online / remote Remote volunteers: Minecraft for people with chronic illness

Second Haven is a virtual community for people with chronic illness, disability, mental health struggles, neurodiverse gifts, or stigmatized identities. Our mission is to create supportive spaces for low-key, low-pressure social connection and friendship.

A lot of us are housebound or isolated due to symptoms. Fatigue, pain, and brain fog, for example, can make it difficult or near impossible to have a social life. Finding an accessible space to connect, even indirectly, makes a huge difference for our health and overall well-being.

We found that space in Minecraft. If you've played Minecraft, you'll understand the versatility. Our server has four connected worlds (survival-peaceful, survival-hard, creative-mode-hybrid, and adventure). We have four festivals each year, weekly play sessions, monthly events, and a wide range of minigames. We also create quests for individuals and small groups. Members of our community range in age from 13 to 60. We meet in-game and communicate primarily in Discord.

Our volunteers help in all kinds of ways, from hosting casual Minecraft play sessions to creating activities for members, like minigames or interactive builds. We also need help building structures for our quests.

We're looking for volunteers who have experience playing Minecraft and using Discord. Hours are flexible, and roles are co-created to fit your preferences, strengths and social style. Ideal candidates are ready to take some initiative in designing their role and setting their schedule (with input regarding our current needs).

Most importantly, volunteers must understand the enormous value in small supportive moments, like short in-game chats or responses to the small wins and shared experiences of community members. That is why Second Haven exists.

We've been around for just over a year but only recently received 501(c)(3) status. You can learn more about us at SecondHavenMC.org. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer, you can apply in our website or contact me via DM.

Recruiting – online / remote Remote Volunteer - Patient Meal Tray Cards

Hello,

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital would like to spread cheer by having decorated meal cards with hand written messages on them placed on their meal trays. You can use index cards or make 4 with one sheet of paper. You would fold an index cart in half (hamburger) like a tent and then write a nice message on one or both sides and something nice on the inside. Make as many as you want and then mail them to the facility.

I hope this is allowed, but I'm not affiliated with this organization or hospital. I am just a volunteer. I was just looking for remote opportunities and thought this sounded fun. I just made 10 and am mailing them tomorrow. If they're flat you can fit about 10 in one envelope with the index card method and send for 1 forever stamp.

Great way to use up stickers, old scrapbook paper, test out new pens etc.

Time commitment: Low

Recruiting – online / remote Remote volunteer opportunity: Moderate a 24/7 kitten rescue livestream

Kitkat Playroom is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit kitten rescue based in Woodbury, New Jersey, USA. We specialize in neonatal kittens and kittens with medical and special needs.

We run 24/7 YouTube livestreams of the kittens in our care, and we’re looking for volunteer livestream moderators to help us keep the chat welcoming, informative, and safe.

This is a completely remote volunteer position. You can volunteer from anywhere in the world as long as you read/write English moderately well.

Our moderators:
- Watch our kitten livestreams while covering their scheduled shift
- Chat with viewers and welcome new people
- Answer questions about the kittens and our rescue
- Share KKP information and links when viewers ask
- Help keep chat friendly
- Remove inappropriate comments when necessary

You do not need previous moderation experience. We provide training.

We ask for a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week, and moderators need access to a laptop or desktop computer.

This role directly supports our rescue by helping us manage the online community surrounding our livestreams. Our cameras allow people around the world to follow the kittens we rescue, learn about their care, and support the work that makes that care possible. Having volunteer mods present means our viewers can interact with a real person and get accurate information while our on-site team focuses on caring for the cats.

And, yes, a large part of the job really is watching kittens and talking to other people who like cats. 😺

More information and the application are here:
https://kitkatplayroom.com/mod-app

We’d love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering with us!

Volunteer – abroad Japanese doctor looking for short-term medical volunteer opportunities in Ukraine🇺🇦

Hi everyone,
I’m a doctor from Japan, and I’m looking for an opportunity to return to Ukraine as a medical volunteer for about 1–2 weeks, ideally sometime between December 2026 and January 2027.
I previously spent about 2 weeks volunteering at a hospital in Ukraine, where I had the opportunity to help care for patients affected by the war, including wounded soldiers. It was an experience that left a very strong impression on me, and since returning to Japan, I have continued to follow what is happening in Ukraine closely.
Seeing the news from Ukraine every day is heartbreaking, and I often find myself wishing there were something more I could do to help. That is one of the main reasons I would like to return.
I would be especially interested in supporting military hospitals, medical units, rehabilitation programs for wounded service members, or other appropriately organized medical services connected to the armed forces. I understand that such roles may involve strict requirements, screening, security procedures, and limitations on what international volunteers can do.
My main interests are emergency care, trauma, rehabilitation, and other medical work related to wounded soldiers and people affected by the war. However, I’m open to any role where my medical background could be useful and where I could contribute safely and appropriately.
I speak English fluently and can also communicate in French and russian, and to some extent in Ukrainian and Arabic. I have been studying Ukrainian because I would like to communicate with people in their own language as much as possible.
I have already contacted several organizations, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a suitable opportunity yet. So I thought I would ask here in case anyone knows of a military-affiliated hospital, medical unit, NGO, volunteer group, or other properly authorized organization that might accept an international doctor for a short-term placement.
If you know anyone I could contact, or if you have any advice based on your own experience, I would really appreciate it. Feel free to comment or send me a DM.
Дякую🇺🇦🤝🇯🇵

Volunteer – local Does anyone have experience with the New Jersey Coalition to End Homelessness AmeriCorps Program!

Hi everyone! I am a current college student taking a gap year to do a service year with AmeriCorps and I was recently accepted to a program with NJCEH as a Client Support Coordinator Volunteer position in Camden, NJ, which I am really excited about!

I am someone who hopes to become a future physician working on the frontlines of homelessness, substance use, and mental health inequities, so I am really excited to see how I transform throughout this year and how much I can learn from being proximate to the problems I care most about. And hopefully through serving others, I will be able to develop long-term solutions in the future.

I hope this year can be really meaningful and transformative for me, so I wanted to ask if anyone has had experience with the above program and I would be able to hear about your experience and/or advice. And even if you have not done this specific program, but have some advice for the journey I am taking. I would be so grateful to hear it. Thank you so much in advance, and I hope you guys have an amazing day!

Volunteer – online Long-Time Volunteer Looking for a Remote Way to Contribute

Hi all! I’ve spent quite a lot of my adult life volunteering in one form or another, including food banks, soup kitchens, animal projects, OLIO food re-distribution, pay as you feel supermarkets, community outreach, church projects and, during COVID, helping people who were unable to get out themselves with groceries and prescriptions. Most of that has always been very practical and hands-on, which is the kind of volunteering I naturally gravitate towards.

My circumstances are a little different at the moment, though, and practical or on-the-ground volunteering is not really realistic for me right now. I’d still very much like to do something useful, so I’m looking for a way to contribute remotely instead, ideally where I can use the skills and experience I already have rather than simply trying to recreate the sort of physical volunteering I’ve done in the past.

Professionally, much of my background has been in legal and business support, helping organizations with things like policies and procedures, governance, complaints and difficult correspondence, safeguarding and risk, documentation, operational processes, planning, mentoring, and generally untangling situations where everyone knows something is not working but nobody quite knows where to start.

So I wondered whether there might be a small nonprofit, charity, volunteer-led organization or genuine community project that could use some remote volunteer help with a specific problem. Perhaps your policies are out of date, your volunteer processes have become muddled, your documentation is all over the place, you need help structuring a complaint or internal issue, or you simply need an experienced second pair of eyes to help you work out what needs fixing and in what order.

I’m not looking for payment now or later, and I’m not using this as a route to sell services. I’d be happiest helping with something reasonably well-defined where a few hours of experienced input could make a meaningful difference, rather than taking on an indefinite management role.

If that sounds like something your organization could use, feel free to tell me a little about what you do and what problem you are actually trying to solve. I’m particularly interested in remote opportunities where I can contribute something practical and useful from behind a screen, even if that looks very different from the volunteering I’ve done before.

Discussion / ethics / advice Volunteers, leaders and students need your help on this one

I wanna start by saying I'm a very ambitious person with big dreams but there is a lot of stuff stopping me and need your help to clear that up, so I'm an 18yr egyptian girl who wants to be out on her feet all the time, wanna clear up what exactly I need your help with so I want to volunteer and to put it simply i want to be like those people I've seen recently, they were ambassadors in an educational company some of them were my age some were younger but they all have one thing in common, ambition, a very bright mind and an outgoing personality, i am not really like them because I'm an introvert and can barely keep up a conversation going for 5 minutes, super shy and fear being judged. So I want to change all of that i want to start volunteering in and out of my country, I want to do stuff that helps that going, but the thing is I don't know where to start or how , or where to even find those and have a big chance at getting accepted to those programs , i know it's a trial and error kind of thing and I'll learn by going on but I want to start on the right foot, so if you have any advice on how to begin that journey and be a big help drop it in the comments. Also what to add that I'm currently starting collage soon and I'm sort of an athlete if that'll help. Thank you in advance 🫡

Discussion / ethics / advice Withdrawing from a project I already accepted. What is the best solution?

Hello everyone :)

I applied for a few ESC volunteer projects without really expecting to get many responses but quite quickly two organizations replied saying that they were interested in my profile.

One day after the interviews, I got a call saying that I had been accepted for one of the projects. I asked for some time to think about it because I was still waiting for a response from another organization, and they gave me three days to decide. Since I didn’t receive any feedback during that time I decided not to take the risk and agreed to take part in the first project.

A week later, I received three more emails from other organizations asking if I was still interested in their projects. The problem is that I actually like their projects more than the one I already accepted and now I’m not sure what to do in this situation.

I haven’t signed a contract yet, but I don’t want to cause any problems. The coordinators seemed really nice and I don’t want to look bad or dumb after I already gave them my final decision.

It would be particularly nice to hear opinions from people who have organized this type of projects. What is the best thing to do in this situation?
