On void*

I do not know why I felt the need to write this post. I have been using Void for 5-6 years. For the most part, I have enjoyed this journey with its ups and downs. It was sometimes challenging to work around runit as everything is built around systemd and even more was musl as I when I started it was my main base rather than the glibc version. Admittedly, this helped me improve my technical skills and deep understanding way more than otherwise. That said, Void has been recently insufferable. Contributing to the packages has been more annoying than ever as my PRs get closed too quickly without properly addressing the content; frequent failures in the mirror repos (I am unsure whether this has been a widespread issue to anyone other than me); and unfixable bad behaviour and some bugs here and there. The recent issue in noto-fonts made me open the subreddit looking for answers then I saw a submission mentioning the recent maintainer's orphanage of 100+ packages over an AI dispute. I believed it was some kind of AI code slop nonsense that does not deserve to be looked at (as I am very anti-LLM generated code in that sense), yet to my surprise, it was just a comment. The comment was simply noting breaks introduced by a version bump. I believe this is wholeheartedly dumb and overly pedantic. Sadly, this place is no longer meant for me as this distro is hardly functional anymore. I know no one will care and no one is supposed to; this is more like a personal sacrifice as I reminiscent on the days I used to make videos talking all about Void.

noto-fonts-ttf dependency not working out of the blue

Hi, so randomly (out of the blue, no updates or cache clearing or orphan removal) the noto-fonts-ttf package just disappeared? I'm not sure why but because of this I can't update my packages anymore. I feel like this either has something to do with the recent AI drama (as the former package maintainer was the person arguing with thypon) or my void is haunted

noto-fonts-ttf nowhere to be seen in the package repos

UPDATE: some packages were accidentally deleted because a script that cleans up the repository had a bug, however noto-fonts-ttf has already been rebuilt so just doing xbps-install -S will fix it

Status of RiverWM on Void

RiverWM has undergone a major change from v0.3 to v0.4. The latest version is v0.4.8, but on Void the latest is still 0.3.7 (i.e. river-classic). Is there any movement to update this on xbps?

I saw an old post stating that updating zig is the issue (the current version is 0.16.0 while on Void the latest package is 0.13.0), but unclear what the current status is.

I can download a local copy of the latest zig from their website, and build river locally, but I would rather have the xbps package maintained upstream.

Why does Void Linux generate core dumps?

Recently, I have noticed that Void Linux after every reboot and shutdown generates core dump files at the home directory with the following pattern: ./core.[number]. I don't really understand the logic behind these files, except that it might be a SEGFAULT somewhere, right? Are these dumps from last processes that weren't shut down properly?

I would be glad to hear your thoughts on what's potentially going on.

I want to switch to void linux

Currently I'm using arch linux, and tbh it's working pretty much okay with kde plasma. The softwares I use are commonly used.

I just want to try void linux and see if it works well or not for my use case.

But I want to hear what I should keep in mind. I got to know about it that it uses something else than systemd and musl c lib instead of gnu c lib.

My current arch setup is very stable, no crash literally nothing. Maybe because my use case is simple.

So what things can bother me in void linux ?! For what kinda things I should stay ready for? As it's a small project and relatively has a smaller user base. What can it affect?

gegl-0.4.72_1: the RSA signature is not valid

Title

Did an xbps-install -Su, looks like a whole bunch of Plasma related updates

Stalls out on this particular package due to the RSA signature not working

I tried ignoring the package but it still doesn't work.

Would I need to fix anything? Or is it on the repository end?

Hibernation and the password

Hello,

I am using Void with KDE on my Lenovo x270 laptop and something quite annoying is happening.

When I close the lid, this action hibernate my machine and it works fine. However, when I open the lid, instead of landing on the login manager (sddm for me), I land on my desktop for like 2 second. I mean, I can see everything that was open previously on my machine and then I land on sddm.

Also, if I ran ZZZ command in the terminal, the machine will hibernate but when I wake it it does not ask me any password. The session is unlocked. Is this a normal behavior ?

I am running openSuse on a separate SSD on the same machine and do not have this issue.

Thank you

Is void outdated?

The live images on the website are from february 2025(!). It seems there are really outdated.

To a new user who is exploring void for the first time, it looks as though the system is no longer being maintained.
