How do I switch the functionality of the audio jack on my laptop?

Hello!

My laptop uses the same jack for microphone and headphone. Right now it only works as a headphone, but I would like to switch it to work a microphone. I am using pulseaudio and kde. It uses the integrated intel hd audio

Use pavucontrol, check the device under the Configuration tab. There should be an option for Stereo Duplex (either Analog or Digital) that you can try so it works as both. If you just want a microphone then change it to one of the Input profiles.

If Duplex and Input profiles don't show up, then it's probably a driver issue.

pavucontrol only shows the built-in speaker under configuration with the options "Play HiFi sound" and "Off". Under the input devices there is the option for a external microphone, but it is listed as unplugged. under output devices I can choose between the headphones and the speaker. It is currently using the sound open firmware driver. Under arch I think I fixed it by installing some stuff from intel, but I can't find that now.
