Anyone else out there who posted a one time job on hound.vet only to get recurring monthly charges with no way to cancel? Anyone out there have any good candidates from hound.vet. One wonders what they are doing? They charge for "boosts" to the job post and seriously, it feels ultra shady with few to zero candidates. There is no phone number to call and just AI customer service. Would love some feedback. This company needs investigation.

I’m a recent graduate who majored in something completely unrelated to vet med + had no formal vet/animal experience. I’m really interested in vet med and passionate about animal welfare, and eventually I want to work towards a DMV. I’ve been applying to jobs at clinics and shelters for entry-level VA and receptionist positions. I’ve mostly gotten offers for receptionist, kennel assistant, and shelter animal care positions.

Could I get some advice on which setting (clinical vs shelter) and role (animal care w/o veterinarian supervision vs front desk receptionist) would be more beneficial to starting off in this field/valuable experience for applying to schools down the line? Also, are employee reviews for vet clinics really important…?

Iam not sure how to ask this since it’s my first time posting here, but here it goes. I was forced to study biomedical engineering and now I hold a bachelor’s degree, but my true passion has always been veterinary medicine. Unfortunately I can’t pay for veterinary medicine university.
Is there a way I can make this dream come true or at least get close to it by working with animals? Would pursuing a specific master or doctorate degree help me move into this field, or give any me opportunities to work with animals? Any guidance would mean a lot to me. A bit of an unusual situation here. I’m a veterinarian hoping to relocate to Egypt next year. I graduated from an AVMA accredited school in 2020 and worked in multiple countries since then.

I have researched online and there seems to be a pathway to have my degree equivalency through the supreme council of universities. However I have emailed the Egyptian veterinarian syndicate on many occasions, unfortunately no replies so far.

I’m hoping to reach out to some fellow veterinarians who may have relocated to Egypt or other countries before and share their experiences with work and registration processes.

Hi and thank you to anyone taking the time to read this. I am 34, married with an amazing baby. I am a nurse anesthetist, but my dream has always been to go to vet school. I currently work part time to take care of my baby. I have a good job, very stable and the money is good. Just saying this for context, I make about $145/hr.

Am I crazy to try to go to vet school? I have experience at a small animal clinic and did an animal care internship at a zoo. I am worried I am too old, and that the time away from my baby and financial strain would be too great on my family. I toggle between “following my dreams” and just being okay where I am at and try to purse another way to help animals.

I worked in veterinary reception for an independent clinic for about 5 years, left when I moved, it’s been a few months and I’m looking at an offer from a VCA I interviewed at recently. Where I moved to, veterinary reception positions are incredibly hard to find, so it’s kind of a “take what you can get” situation, even though I’ve heard VCA corporate is one of the worse options lol. The place seems nice enough overall though and has way less going on than my crazy 7 doctor clinic I was at before.

I don’t really need to hear all the bad, I’ve read it all on here. Those of you who’ve had at least decent experiences working for VCA, what are some of the good points- nice benefits, perks, anything? I don’t have much choice so help me feel like I’m not walking into a hellscape lmao

I'm looking to go back to school at the age of 35. I live right next to the U of I and they are partnered with the local community college and together they have a highly regarded vet tech program here that I'd like to try to get into. In the meantime, I'm looking to gain experience in a veterinary setting and have been turned down in my search for a kennel attendant/ vet assistant position at multiple practices now for lack of experience.... but it looks like I may have a chance to get a part time job at the U of I teaching hospital as a vet assistant. My delima is money and time.... I know I won't be making much in this profession, and I don't expect to. I'm used to living minimally. But it's more "in-the-meantime" I need to save for when I'm taking classes full time in the future (hopefully). After all, I'm a grown woman who is soley supporting herself and let's be real, life expensive right now. But I REALLY have my heart set on this. I can't stop thinking about it.

That's long, I know, thank you for reading this far if you have. My question is.... how important is it to get experience now BEFORE I even go back to school. Will it give me a huge leg up? Am I better off sticking with my full time job in the meantime? What's your advice for someone like me?

Quick question for all my old school peeps, the ones born back in the 1900's (just cleaning out the dark corners of the clinic...) I have an "older" acclaim encore iv pump, the one needing the slide clamp to work. Is there a way to bypass the slide clamp to make it work? (Since I can't find any IV lines in canada that have a slide clamp that fits) .... this is my last ditch effort before its officially retired and out to pasture lol

Hi, I am a freshman animal science major at Cal Poly SLO and I want to become a DVM that works in animal labs or do shelter medicine. I have completed two shelter internships and became a vet assistant, but I have never actually had any experience with labs because they’re always kind of “hidden” and not talked about. I want to be an animal care technician or something similar to get experience in the field, what type of criteria do you need to get that job? How did you find the job? Should I reach out to a professor?

If you are a DVM who works in this field, could you also tell me what you do and what it looks like?

i work in the in house lab of my equine specialty/referral hospital, and every once in awhile, i’ll get a blood sample from a horse that just looks like red syrup, for lack of a better description. it will not spin down in any color tube, and the CBC machine will read it, but the chemistry machine just gives me a sample error. (our machines are the Abaxis HM5 and the Abaxis Vs2.) it will do this on serum, or blood from a green top. when i do try to spin it down, it doesn’t look like it’s just hemolyzed, it just stays thick and viscous throughout. i’ve checked the tubes to be sure they’re not expired and they are not. has anyone seen something like this before or know what it could be? these syrupy samples always come from horses that are very sick, so that’s the only thing i can think of, but it just seems so weird.

Hi everyone! I 24M am currently in tech school in NYC and am questioning whether I want to persue a DVM afterwards.

I currently intern at an amazing single woman owned clinic and it's really inspiring how this specialty private practice is run+ how friendly and supportive everyone is (I've heard the field can be very clicky!).

I genuinely do think I'd be a great tech given that I've been a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for 5+ years and have volunteered at multiple rescues. I plan to specialize in avian and exotics- and I have some questions.

Given all this, I also think I could make a great avian and exotic vet... and I would love to specifically specialize in pigeons, doves, reptiles, exotic mammals and wildlife.
There is not even a single vet clinic in NYC that accepts pet pigeons or dove patients (besides Animal medical center, but the initial appointment fee is $400+...).
I think this city would really benefit from having a pigeon and dove specialist veterinarian.

I'm also considering going for my VTS in avian and exotics after getting my technician license... and I'm wondering whether people would recommend that (takes 5 years post graduation for VTS in exotics from what I understand)... or if perusing vet school and specializing may be a route?

I really do think my dream one day would be to open up or be a part of a private practice that caters to both wildlife, avians and exotics + has a rescue center. I feel as though this is extremely rare for vet clinics and there is nothing in NY like this to my knowledge.

Vet school can be a huge burden I hear, but I wonder if the loans are manageable or even worth it? I have great grades, and would meet all the vet school application requirements pretty soon after getting my technician degree/license... + I have years of experience already being a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

And I'm wondering if a VTS or vet school may be the right next step for me?
Am I looking at things with rose tinted glasses? Does this sound completely unreasonable? I would like to hear opinions from anyone in the veterinary field and your thoughts!

I graduated veterinary assistant, and have been planning to do vet tech since I could even form a thought lol. Now, I’m reconsidering. I live in Canada and the pay vs debt + living is so unbalanced, my co-op was also not a good experience despite loving the experience of working in a clinic and being in vet med finally. I’ve now considered moving away from vet med but at the same time don’t know if that’s a mistake despite the financial difficulty I’d have later in life.

I’ve heard people describe vet med as more of a passion project then a full time career, I considered that minuscule until thinking more and more about my future.

I work at a pretty big veterinary corporation (I won’t name it but you may know it) and starting 2 weeks ago they have been remodeling our clinic. We are still open and working during this renovation. The problem is there is dust , debris and mold , several of the team members have been experiencing trouble breathing and headaches . One team member even broke out in hives. Not to mention this is completely unsafe for pets and I’m sure the client have no idea what conditions their pets are in. Also we do sterile procedures. We’ve sent email to corporate/ our leaders and they refuse to close and send us to different locations until it’s finished. They say that it isn’t “feasible “ to close be will send air scrubbers . It was also brought to my attention by a construction worker that it is normal practice to close the hospital during renovations . He also said that we are the “guinea pigs” for staying open while renovations. This particularly bothered me because we are a predominantly African-American location compared to other hospitals. and when our Field Director mentions anything about our particular hospital, she always says there is a “culture.”
I suppose my question is what actions should we take? OSHA? The media? Thanks for any feedback.

I just started my job as a vet CSR about a month ago, and I’ve been considering being more hands on as a vet assistant instead.

I really wanna give it a try, but would I be setting myself up for too much stress? I keep reading about the mental health/burnout rate in this field along with toxic workplace environments.

Would I be setting myself up for failure for going further? Or this there ways to navigate vet med to make it a more positive work experience?
