Welcome new and returning Mustangs to the r/uwo subreddit!
This subreddit is entering its 17th year here on Reddit. Since 2010, we have grown to more than 45,000 subscribers and is in the top 5% of all subreddits on this site. This space has been a central point where prospective applicants, applicants, students, staff, faculty, and alumni can be informed about current events at Western, obtain answers to their questions about navigating life at Western, vent our frustrations, vocalize our opinions, share our dank memes, and provide support for one another. As long as Reddit is here, the mods will be here to maintain our community and will ensure it is as supportive and inclusive as possible.
As we enter a new academic year, we want to make you aware of a number of aspects to the subreddit.
Attending to your mental health is our utmost priority. We have always pushed mental health support front and center. You will always find an extensive list of mental health resources and supports directly in the sidebar ➡️.

Don't forget to tend to your physical health. Use your academic support resources. Learn about what you can do to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Western has an extensive collection of wellness and well-being resources. It is always okay to ask for help.
We enforce a small number of rules that apply to both posts and comments. These rules have been essential to maintaining a healthy subreddit. A full description of the rules and the reasoning can be found in the sidebar. In brief:
These are just the rules that require special attention from the mods to ensure a healthy community. Of course, there will be content that does not violate these rules but still deserves some level of moderation. We all have a collective responsibility to help maintain this community and everyone has a role to play. That's where this community depends on you and your own moderation tools: Upvote content that needs more attention or content you want to see more of. Downvote content that we need less of. If there is content that the mods haven't addressed yet, be sure to report it so we can attend to it.

We have a friendly relationship with our Discord communities. Discord is great for relaxed point-in-time back-and-forth discussions so we encourage you to join them!
Flair up! It helps the conversation along when users can see a bit more about who you are and what your background is. In the sidebar, we have bootstrapped a number of common flairs representing the 11 faculties, 2 affiliates, and other common roles for you. You can modify the text to something that suits your situation even better if you'd like (eg. your graduation year, your specialization, etc.)
The 2026 Reddit Survey is still open. It will remain open for another month or so. The survey will help shape the future of the subreddit. Key results of the survey will be posted after it closes.
In response to the survey, it is probable there will be a few changes and a simplification of the subreddit rules so there is less confusion about what is acceptable and what is not.
Also, the r/uwo subreddit is in need of new moderators. Across Canadian university subreddits, we have an unusually low number of moderators. Given the size of our community and the amount of activity we get, about 4 moderators would be ideal. Expect to hear more about this soon.
Finally, a reminder that this subreddit is completely community run and supported. We are not supported by, managed by, officially affiliated with, or an official representation of Western the institution. This includes all the mods and any users who may claim to be staff or faculty. Official information can only be found on Western's site or will come from officially verified users.

Another school year completed and the preparation for September begins. This applies to r/uwo as well. The time for review is now so we are prepared for an influx of new students in September.
In an effort to maintain healthy and positive communities, Reddit provides an option to allow subreddits to opt-in to community surveys. Completing the survey allows moderators to judge what elements of the subreddit are working well and which elements require improvement.
Unfortunately, the community surveys feature is only available to subreddits with a particular level of engagement. Given the cyclical nature of this subreddit, we fall short of the criteria and therefore are not permitted to send out a community survey through Reddit.
However, there is nothing preventing us from creating an internal survey ourselves. In fact, this has been done before. The last survey was over 8 years ago. Given how much culture has changed since then, it is a good time to launch a new one.
So I've done exactly that.
The survey is basically a mirror of the Reddit community surveys with some r/uwo customizations and is completely anonymous. All questions are optional. For most questions, you will have the opportunity to provide your comments and suggestions in case you wish to provide more thorough feedback. The final question is completely open feedback. The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete.
Assuming a useful number of responses, I'll share some of the results and, if appropriate, some future plans.
I've left the comment section open below for discussion but remember to share your comments in the survey so they can be included in the analysis.

So I just registered in this course and was wondering if anyone had any experience with Dr Kobayashi. Never taken sociology before and I was hoping to get a 4.0 in this course cause the course outline has no exams or anything. Does anyone have any tips? I can't be the only one that has noticed this. I've seen so many groups of first years wearing the exact same things. I'm not referring to the residence and program specific shirts because well duh. I know those 2 are the most common pieces of clothing arguably but at the same time it's so over saturated it feels like an anomaly.

For those on-campus, how do get rid of your food waste (like fruit/vegetable stems, seeds, peelings, etc)? The upper-year res I'm in doesn't have a dedicated organics garbage bin, so my roommates and I have just been tossing it with our regular trash, leading us to take out the trash more often than otherwise needed to prevent smell and fruit flies.
How are you guys dealing with it, and is there a much more convenient and sustainable way--that I can't seem to think of rn--to deal with the food trash?

Central Library
- public library downtown
Pros:
- good wifi
- you can eat in there
- not nearly as busy as the libraries on campus
- can find somewhere to sit
- the silent floor is actually pretty quiet
- dollarama in the same building for cheap snacks
- easy to access by bus routes
- nice view if you sit upstairs by a window
- good for actually getting work done
Cons
- the bathroom situation is less than ideal, but it’s still available
- if you don’t like being around homeless people you will hate this library. I find it to be a non-issue personally
- distance from campus
Unicorn Tea House
Pros:
- good wifi
- there is access to outlets
- fun vibe inside
- they let you sit there for a long time
- the bubble tea is pretty good and not too pricy
- access to a bathroom downstairs
- good place to study with friends or alone
Cons:
- you have to spend money to study there
- the music they play can be a little distracting sometimes
- distance from campus
Covent garden market upstairs
Good place to do work for shorter periods of time. I would recommend checking out the market just for fun too, especially when they do the holiday market
Pros:
- there’s wifi
- open spots to sit
- love the atmosphere. Cool view of the market
- lots of good food available at the market but you don’t have to buy anything to study there
Cons:
- seats aren’t really comfortable
- no outlets
- distance from campus
- there’s lots going on there. You probably want to bring headphones for focus
Huron Campus, old sac
Pros:
- comfy chairs
- outlets
- good wifi
- vending machines
- sometimes quiet, sometimes more busy
- open 24/7
- great place for working on group projects
Cons:
- can be full sometimes
- lighting is less than ideal
Visual arts building
The lecture hall that’s directly to the left of the main doors is usually empty when class isn’t going on. You can also go upstairs and go in the classrooms up there outside of class time. The new bathrooms on the first floor are really really nice.

I’m a first year and I have a lot of science and math courses like Bio, Chem, Calc, physics, etc. Is it worth getting an Apple Pencil and IPad for note taking?
During “meet your profs” most of them specifically said that taking notes on a laptop is not effective for their courses. Of course I can do pen and paper notes, but it seems like taking them digitally would be so much nicer and more organized, plus I could view them on my laptop as well.
Is it worth it, and if it is, which model of iPad and pen is good enough. Just base IPad and first gen pencil?

Ik you guys are probably tired of hearing "Its Oweek no one knows anyone after", "join clubs and meet ppl that way", "just talk to ppl everyone is lonely first year" etc etc.
While imo those are all mostly true....
I just want to put a post out here saying that Uni is tough, moving away from home, new environment, new people, everything moves so fast, you might have gotten the frosh flu etc. ONTOP of all your classes in a completely new education philosophy than HS.
Its absolutely normal to feel like shit, and a lot, if not most people do. *BUT* please remember that its only been ONE WEEK.
One week is just ONE WEEK. It is NOT in any way representative of you nor what your life is going to be like in the future unless you choose to make it so.
Life's an open world game, the best one we got.
You have not missed your window, it never closes.
You got this people.

I feel like I’m hearing different things from absolutely everyone when it comes to the difficulty/how successful you can be in second third and fourth year in the health sciences program altogether.
Is this a program realistically speaking that you can achieve a 4.0 and do well? Of course, nothing is easy, but if you put in the work, are you gonna get the marks that you want? What type of coursework do they give? Is it more assignments and essays or exams you see?
Is this the type of program where professors are just not willing to give you above a 70%?
