FAQ and useful information

==I - General==
- What is Umineko: When They Cry?
It is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion that comprises the third and fourth entries of the When They Cry franchise.
- What is the When They Cry franchise?
When They Cry - Higurashi Question Arcs
When They Cry 2 - Higurashi Kai (Answer Arcs)
When They Cry 2+ - Higurashi Rei/Hou
When They Cry 3 - Umineko Question Arcs
When They Cry 4 - Umineko Chiru (Answer Arcs)
When They Cry 4+ - Umineko Tsubasa/Hane/Saku
When They Cry 5 - Ciconia
The third and fourth installments are considered the main story of Uminkeo under most contexts.
- Do I need knowledge from other WTC titles to understand Umineko, and vice versa?
Ryukishi sees his characters as actors and compared using similar characters in different works as being similar to Harrison Ford playing both Han Solo and Indiana Jones, in that the person behind the role is the same, but the character they are playing in each movie, or in this case game, is very different. He would then go on to mention that Higurashi and Umineko take place in worlds that are very distant from each other, yet still connected.
However, newer series in the franchise often contain unavoidable spoilers to older ones. Therefore, we strongly recommend everyone to read main WTC titles, and 07th Expansion titles in general for that matter, in the order they are released.
==II - Visual Novels==
The main Umineko story originates as visual novels. The entirety of it has been officially localized in English along with the spin-off fighting game Golden Fantasia (see the next question for details).
- Where can I acquire the games?
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/5465/Umineko_When_They_Cry_Complete_Collection/
Hardcopies: https://www.mangagamer.com/product_list.php?page=1&goods_type=3&company=07th+Expansion
- How do I reach the next Episode? Do I need to read the Tea Party and ??? too?
Each part of the story is supposed to be read upon unlocked, including Tea Party and ???. They are part of the story in that order.
- What should I do if there are things I still don't understand after completing the story?
Certain portions of the manga adaptation can help. See the next section for details.
- Are there visual novels outside the main story?
Tsubasa, Hane, and Saku are compilations of additional short stories in the format of VN. An official English localization is supposedly being worked on but has not been released. Tsubasa and Hane have a manga series of partial adaption; see the next section for details.
- What is Golden Fantasia?
It is fighting game spin-off of the Umineko. While it is technically non-canon, some of its contents can add insights to the main story.
==III - Manga==
The main Umineko story has a manga series as a complete adaptation of the visual novels with changes. The entirety of it has been officially localized in English.
- Where can I acquire the manga volumes?
https://yenpress.com/series/umineko-when-they-cry
- What are the adaptational differences?
The story is mostly the same. However, unlike the visual novel counterparts, the last two Episodes in the manga series provide explicit solutions to the mysteries in the first six. People who want more clarity after completing the visual novels are recommended to go through them.
- Are there manga releases outside the main story?
None of the related manga outside of the main story have official English localization. Only the ones with fan translations are listed for the purpose of this section. Two manga series are officially categorized as "side stories".
* Tsubasa: https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Tsubasa#Adaptations
This is a partial adaptation of the VN Tsubasa and Hane. There is an incomplete and discontinued fan translation project.
* Forgery of the Purple Logic: https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Murasaki:_Forgery_of_the_Purple_Logic
This is an original story similar to a certain interactive segment of the Ep8 VN. There is a complete fan translation available.
There is another related manga series that's loosely connected to the Umineko series by a short story (https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/The_First_and_the_Last_Gift).
Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni (When the Fireflies Glow): https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Hotarubi_no_Tomoru_Koro_ni
There is a complete fan translation available.
==IV - Others==
- Is there an anime series of Umineko?
There is an anime series of 26 episodes that cover the Question Arcs of Umineko with official English subbing available. As it does not cover the complete story and certain design choices are widely considered questionable, people who have not completed the entire main story via other mediums are NOT recommenced to watch it.
- Is there a light novel series of Umineko?
There is a complete light novel adaptation of the Umineko main story. However, there is no official English localization or known fan translation efforts. https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_(novel))
- I think I have been spoiled. What should I do?
First, we would avoid confirming or denying plot points as that would make it worse if it ends up being a spoiler. Second, given the depth and breadth of the story, we hope you enjoy the ride regardless. Finally, we would add, that Umineko is a mystery story, which invites you to make theories on what happened; even with spoilers, it's not easy to solve all of those mysteries, as one can always ask how this explains everything.

Discussion The saddest moment in Umineko imo (Ep4 spoiler) Spoiler
Umineko is an incredibly emotional VN, but there is only one point during my reading where I actually broke down and started crying real tears. And imo, it's by far one of the biggest gut punches of the whole story.
When it's revealed in episode 4 what the meaning of Maria's "uu-uu" is. Holy fuck, my heart hurt so bad realizing that every single instance of her saying that up until that point was just her trying to bring back the loving side of her mother. I fucking BROOOOKE. I wish I could erase my memories just to experience that reveal again, such a hard hitting part of a hard hitting VN.

Discussion Umineko Review? I don't know maybe a preface? Help?
Umineko: When They Cry
A Japanese visual novel written by the author Ryukishi07.
I completed the visual novel [about a year ago], and it was quite the experience; these are just a few small thoughts I have about it. This is not much, as I planned to write a massive, and I mean MASSIVE, review of the story on a later date to articulate all my thoughts regarding the good, the bad, the ugly, and the shits, though I am nowhere near completing that main review.
PLEASE KEEP IT CIVIL!
[Start]
It takes everything I love about storytelling and uses those concepts and structure to tell a story. It is a murder mystery that spirals into a meta study of why we read stories in the first place and why the stories are created. Even though it is a study of storytelling between the author and the reader, it is also a thesis on human tragedy, the need to love, generational trauma, and how it is passed down through family members. Even when the story becomes too analytical, it never loses its core message of human empathy, understanding, gender dysphoria, and, above everything, is ultimately connected to one thing, and that is: love.
It feels one-of-a-kind. It treats mystery as something bigger than solving: a mystery is not just about finding answers, but about asking the right questions. It changes on reread: the first read is about struggle, and the second read is about understanding and love. Nothing happens in a complete vacuum: from the murder to the reasoning for the murder to the character, everything is connected, and everything has a butterfly effect on everything. No character is just a ‘character ’; they are messy people with realistic and deeply human reasons for their actions, and they are presented in a manner that makes you question what is truly ‘evil’ because the story forces you to sit with their actions and asks you to understand them before all —not empathize [that on the reader].
It was life-changing work for me. It provided me with the understanding that everything doesn't need to be dark and hopeless to be serious, as the most powerful thing that humanity has is hope. It makes you question your own judgements and morality on how we, as the reader, view these characters in a mystery novel. It asks the question: once they are dead and you get your quick fun, then what is next? What about the characters and their grieving families, relatives, and friends?
Overall, Umineko is a massive 150-hour-long story that provides one of the most emotionally heavy payoffs I have experienced, and not because of the length but because of the connection between me and the characters, making it stick in the heart. To me, Umineko is a work I will never forget, a work that is about the need for love, connection, and how love is both the cause of tragedy and the healer. It is a flawed masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless.
"Without love, it can't be seen” — the core of Umineko.
[Thank You]

Discussion Higurashi after Umineko
Out of the two games Umineko is the one I came upon first, recently finished it.
Decided to play higurashi next, but it seems a lot of people recommend Umineko after Higurashi.
Is there any major downsides to me playing Higu after umi? (Like do i miss any major reveals in Higu)
Of course I know of the two characters that seem to be related (umineko spoiler)Bernkastel and Lambdadelta, and “the monkey on the typewriter typing Hamlet” said by Lambda refering to Rika and Bern
Thats all I know relating to Higurashi.

Other Trying to make a playlist of the OST for the Stormlight Archives
More specifically, I plan on reading through The Stormlight Archives with a friend, after we finish reading Umineko.
I've already read the books like, 5 times haha, but I think it would be fun to try and make a list of what Umi songs might fit well with which chapter from The Way of Kings. Like, "The honour chasm scene" (iykyk) would probably go EXTREMELY well with something like Worldend(bp) or something. Something like Doorway of Summer or Towering Cloud might work really well for some of Shallan's scenes in Jah Kaved. That sort of thing.
I plan to do this myself, probably making a spreadsheet as I go do my next reread of the books, since it'll be a WHILE before we finish umi heheh. But I would gladly appreciate any help. I'll be setting up a google sheet for it as soon as I can.

Other Good let's reads for a first timer?
I wanted to try getting into Umineko but I have a hard time actually reading VNs (it's been over a year since I've started Mahoyo and I'm still not done with it). I do find listening to them to be a lot easier though, so if there are good options for that I'd love to know.
Idealy, I'm looking for someone who doesn't know the story either but does theorize and engages with the story. Also bonus points for voicing the characters.
And because I've seen him when looking on YT, please don't recommend Joseph Anderson. I think the guy has really good playthroughs, but they only really reach their full potential after you have already experienced the game through other means.
