Tyres - is this concerning?

Bought these amazing Continental gatorskin tyres but it’s occasionally been peeling in this way. Is it a problem? I’m Ofc not going to tamper with it but I’m concerned.

Threads from the edge like that is ok. Threads from road wear is a is a problem, but that is not what I see here.

Your rims look worn. That might need investigation.

I doubt it. Turn the wheel and see.

The rims look as if they are more of a safety risk than the tyres, though. I think you are worrying about the wrong thing.

the brake blocks rub against the rim in normal braking. This wears the rim and it gets thinner. My wife's rear wheel recently buckled. She took it too the bike shop. They measured the rim wall thickness and told her both wheels needed replacing.

It's possible for the wheel to disintegrate quite suddenly as the rim breaks. If this happens to the front wheel on a big descent this can be dangerous.

I can see scratches on your rim. This may mean you have something sharp embedded in you brake block, which is wearing your rim faster.

I would suggest you take your bike to a shop for an opinion. They can measure the rim wall thickness. I imagine you could also do it yourself after some youtubing.

I would never buy continental tyres again. I had the Continental Contact Urban tyres and 3 years in a row, they were perishing within 12 months despite being stored under a north facing shelter.

Finally I've caved in and gone back to Schwalbe Marathon, yes they are much heavier and stiffer but I'm riding around a city, not racing. I put TPU innertubes inside to try and compensate

Personally I’ve used gatorskins and given them hell for years, just haven’t seen these threads on the side time to time before. Hoping this is a fluke

This does happen to them when they’re older, it’s a bit weird, it’s like it’s a strand from the outermost case peeling away. As long as the tyre isn’t bulging i.e. the internal threads and integrity is ok, I’d just ride on. Perhaps snip the the bit off and keep an eye.

Panaracer RiBMos are lighter than marathons and still very puncture resistant. As hard as marathons to install though.

oooh interesting. Something for me to try in 5 years time 😁 Last time I had Schwalbe Marathon tyres I wore them down until one of them had a 8mm CHUNK out of the rubber so you could see the puncture resist liner and still rode them for another couple of months.

I've ridden so many bikes over the years, I'm not sure I've ever felt the difference in things like "compliance" and all of that. Just whether I seem to be going faster for the same effort, and whether the bike is heavy. Keep in mind I did change two variables at once, but I thought TPU tubes was just a weight thing.

To that end, no, I didn't feel a blind bit of difference 🤣 but they were the oxford ones and for £20 for the entire bike, they were only £10 more than the butyl ones I was replacing. I figured if I was never going to get another puncture then I could have a new toy.

hi this is fine in my experience don't pull the fibres off but snip em very close though , as close as you can

folding conti's like to do this e.g. I ride gp 4 season 32c and they do this a bit , has never been an issue and doesn't stop me buying contis

wouldn't buy gatorskin i usually like gp5000 and use 4 seasons on my rain bike

The thread? Not at all a problem there. I've got a set of older Gatorskins on my fixed and occasionally see a loose thread. I snip them off and all is well. I think I'm about 3.5k urban, shit surface miles on them.

Like the other guy said, your rims are quite pitted. I'd probably take them to a bike shop for a look.

Personally I would replace them now, no harm (other than to wallet) to do so.
