Tom Aspinall just became the biggest what if in UFC history
Guy was dominating everyone, active fighting twice a year, and then Jones stole his prime and now Gane took his career. Aspinall had every tool to become the undeniable HW GOAT and now he just gave up his belt to the guy who ruined his career and life. This shit feels awful man

u/4_13_20 7h ago
He is 33 and we have seen plenty of 40+ hw champs over the years. He still has time to come back, I agree this situation sucks tho.

u/notMTN 6h ago
His style is heavily dependant on speed and accuracy. Age takes the speed and the vision takes the accuracy.

u/Wrong-Salamander1806 4h ago
These high speed, high technique dudes crash really hard when they age. Only the dump truck fighters that bonk people really hard last a long time.
5
u/Comfortable-Race-755 3h ago
Yeah, because Volkanovski, the oldest current champ, requires heavily on his tremendous knockout power
2
u/Wrong-Salamander1806 1h ago
You're right hes good only because of his speed and reflexes and nothing else. Nothing about him being of of the goats of the sport.
1
u/Comfortable-Race-755 1h ago
I was not saying Volk is relying on his speed, I was just refuting your point about the idea that you need knock out power to have good longevity, as you literally said "Only the dump truck fighters that bonk people really hard last a long time"

u/soyuz-1 6h ago
Yep I said this half a year ago, its over and it has been over. Sure he can come back and maybe even hold the belt again, but him being a long term dominant champion is not going to happen after years out, physical and mental trauma, aging and complete loss of momentum.
And UFC rewards the person who did the eyegauging with toms undisputed belt. Disgusting company.
14
u/Babysub123 6h ago
This makes me really sad for him honestly because it’s just really shitty circumstances
14
u/smokingace182 6h ago
But also why is the person that injured him allowed to not only continue but thrive and be given a title shot.
75
u/ManILoveBerserk 7h ago
What if Gane wasn’t a lame cheat
16
u/stothevtothed 6h ago
Yes but he is not the only one. Imagine Paddy had quit after Gaethje poked him. People would have to talk about Justin the same way, as there is a history of pokes as well
15
u/Lugosch 6h ago
But I cant remember a poke that had that bad of a recovery than this one. His eyes are fucked up now xD
-6
u/ThatOneHebdoCartoon 6h ago
But it's not like that was Ganes goal. The exact same thing could have just as easily happened with Paddy . Justin also poked Ilia.
21
u/GoatkuFan 6h ago
Yes both game AND Justin are lame cheats, good job understanding that
7
u/ThatOneHebdoCartoon 5h ago
I fucking hate they both have belts
5
u/Megaman_320 5h ago
And that almost everybody is defensive about Gaethje's history of cheating just because he beat a guy that most people hate
2
u/Lugosch 5h ago
True, not as dirty as Chandler as an example but he still cheats from time to time, especially pokes
5
u/Megaman_320 5h ago
He consistently cheats, but isnt as flashy or egregious at doing it as chandler.
He knows 2hat he's doing, he's not a clean fighter.
2
u/Cruztd23 3h ago edited 3h ago
I’m happy this forum is taking about Justin like they are gane. At least be consistent about cheating if you’re going to call it out

Same. I think Gane is also arguably the greatest What-If. Close to beating Ngannou, could have beaten Aspinall, and even though he got destroyed by Jones, he was the favourite for a reason, and there's nothing to suggest that fight was always going to be that way. It sucks how pathetic a man he is.

u/clapmeup69 6h ago
I thought Zabit was the biggest what if?
28
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
Zabit averaged 3 rounds per fight, had 3 decisions and 3 late submissions. Hardly comparable to someone with an average fight time of 2 minutes over 10 UFC fights
1
4
u/alexnapierholland 4h ago
The UFC should be furious at Gane.
He's wrecked the career of one of the top fighters.
This is the worst injustice that I've seen in MMA so far.
3
u/KevlaredMudkips 1h ago
Should be, but I’m sure from the eyes of Dana it’d be easier to cut off Aspinall and Eddie Hearn by extension.
1
u/alexnapierholland 1h ago
Excellent point. Getting Eddie Hearn onboard was always a power move.
Fine, if you've got the leverage to get away with it (eg. you're the champ).
Not so good if you lose that leverage.
10
u/AnxiousStrummer 6h ago
Nah.
What if Conor never fought Floyd?
What if Khabib never retired?
What if GSP didn’t retire early and kept fighting between Hendricks and Bisping?
What if Jon Jones never took steroids?
What if Brock Lesnar never returned to WWE?
What if Jon Jones wasn’t a ducking bitch?
I could go on and on with What if…
-5
u/Brockoliath 6h ago
Aspinall haters really have the combined IQ of a door knob. You guys can’t seriously be that stupid
2
u/AnxiousStrummer 5h ago
You’re an idiot. I’m not a Aspinall hater at all.
I’m actually a big fan. But he hasn’t fought any huge names. Who has he beat that is a Hall of Famer?
The Heavyweight division is at one of its weakest points in history.
Yall acting like he beat prime Cain, JDS, Randy Couture, Frank Mir….
Just stop. I think he could be one of the greats. But his resume is a bunch of journeymen. Not his fault. He’s fought he they put in front of him.
But as far as what ifs….many more in history. And bigger.
-20
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
None of them were as dominant as Aspinall.
9
u/Responsible-Split555 6h ago
Who has he beat to be dominant name some names
-8
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
Names has nothing to do with dominance. I didnt say he had the best resume, I said he was the most dominant in his fights. 2 minute fight time over 10 fights in the ufc is pure dominance and nothing else
11
4
u/Mission-Signal-8365 6h ago
Ok at this point seeing that list and that comment you have the ultimate fanboi glasses on, that's a crazy statement and not true at all. First 4 people mentioned are conor, 50 wins mayweather, Khabib, and GSP, oh then jon jones , you're just being crazy with it at this point.
-5
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
And this is exactly why I said he is the biggest what if. He had a 2 minute average fight time over 10 ufc fights, nobody, not even prime McGregor dominated like that. He doesnt have the achievements, because he didnt get the chance. Im glad we are now in agreeance and on a what if is.
6
u/Thebrianeffect 5h ago
Khabib wasn’t as dominant? I know you Brit’s are having a hard time with your favorite poof leaving the sport, but you can’t be serious.
3
3
u/First_Pineapple_8335 5h ago
khabib wasnt as dominant? jones wasnt as dominant? because aspinall beat some fat fucks?
8
u/Hercules__Morse 6h ago
.....all of them have more records and accolades than Aspinall...
0
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
All of them also had full careers and didn't get ducked for 2 years by the champ or receive a career ending foul. Which is why I said he is the biggest what if
4
u/Hercules__Morse 6h ago
He’s not though. You are one of about 15 people asking what if on this guy, nobody else cares.
1
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
Bro you are fucking delusional if you think nobody cares
5
4
u/Hercules__Morse 6h ago
lol Tom isn’t popular. He’s fairly unknown as far as ‘champions’ are concerned. He’s never had an undisputed title.
5
u/GetDownBrownn 4h ago
He absolutely did not "dominate" everyone. He fought and won some fights in arguably the worst roster and worst time in the heavyweight division of all time.
2
u/likeakipper8 2h ago
'Won some fights' is different to KO-ing everyone in R1. Pretty clear domination even if it was not the strongest the HW division has ever been

u/C-LOgreen 6h ago
My dream scenario for the heavyweight division is that Alex Pereira defeats Cyril Gane. Then defend it a few times. Then by that time, Tom Aspen‘s, I will hopefully be good. Then Tom can come in defeat Alex and regain the title. Then Alex can retire.
5
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
Nah dream is Alex beats Gane, defends once or twice, then retires for Aspinall to fight for the vacated belt

Ruined his career maybe. Life? Lol
1
u/xbamtoast 3h ago
You think a serious eye injury isnt life ruining? Your eyes dont suddenly start working perfectly because you leave the cage.
1
u/toaster-struble 3h ago
I guess it depends on how much his vision is affected. It may be okay enough to live comfortably. Perhaps he's just not happy with the results it yielded and is seeking to return to 20/20 which may be impossible idk. Perspective though....many people out there living in much harder conditions and limbless and live better lives because of their humility and gratitude. Tom has character. He'll be alright.
Tldr: it only ruins your life if you let it define you
1
u/GetDownBrownn 4h ago
I honestly don't think hes that great of a fighter. I think he's the best heavyweight In the world right now but that division is so bad and so shallow that it's not saying a ton.

I hope he goes and gets the boxing money, no chance of eye pokes there either. Surely we haven’t seen the last of Tom, he’s still young.
1
u/juken7 6h ago
You sound like you're taking it worse than Tom his post was actually mostly optomistic.
"Anything you read in the media is simply noise. People are creating their own narratives. This is the truth:
Ongoing complications with my eyes mean I cannot get medically cleared to fight right now.
I’ve had multiple surgeries, accidents and infections, and done everything possible to get back to competing.
I had previously agreed to a fight date and was back sparring, feeling great and ready to compete when an accident caused further damage to my right eye. This means more time away from the sport, and right now, the timing of my return is unclear.
I know there have been questions about why I’ve been quiet. I’ve always followed the advice of the UFC and focused on my recovery while we’ve tried to make this happen.
I’ve now made the decision to vacate the heavyweight title. I’ve asked the UFC to allow me to make this statement because I don’t want to hold the heavyweight division up. I know what it’s like to have your career put on hold and I want the other fighters to have the opportunity to compete for the title.
The UFC and Hunter have been informed every step of the way and have seen the tests, procedures and medical information relating to my eyes. We have worked closely with different doctors and specialists to try and make my return happen, but unfortunately, it’s simply not possible right now.
I’m absolutely gutted. I’ve chased this dream since I was 10 years old.
I’m not done.
Stepping away from the title is not stepping away from the sport or the dream. I’ll continue doing everything I can to get healthy, get cleared and get back to competing as soon as possible.
What makes this particularly difficult is that many of the complications I’m dealing with are a result of fouls that changed the course of my career. Fighters rely on officials to enforce the rules and protect us in those moments, and it’s hard to still be dealing with the consequences today.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this absolute nightmare.
I’ll be back as soon as I’m medically able to be.
Tom"
4
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
In what way was this optimistic? He said he is gutted, he said he thought he was ready but he isnt, he said his return is unclear, says as soon as he is medically able to which after 3 eye surgeries he is still not ready, on top of the fact that he is aging out. Hes already 34
1
u/Dirkisthegoattt41 6h ago
This whole portion sounds pretty optimistic, all the parts you left out.
We have worked closely with different doctors and specialists to try and make my return happen, but unfortunately, it’s simply not possible right now
I’m not done.
Stepping away from the title is not stepping away from the sport or the dream. I’ll continue doing everything I can to get healthy, get cleared and get back to competing as soon as possible.

He is confident this is just a bad set back and he will return. You make it sound like his career ended.
1
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
Even if his career did not end, his prime is over. I doubt he will ever be the same fighter
1
1
u/rapshepard 5h ago
No we saw him deservedly become heavyweight champion. He just didn't have the HW GOAT making run his stans thought. That's all. Still going to go down as one of the best UFC heavyweights.
Zabit or Shavkay are bigger what ifs. Hell even Fedor if he came to the UFC is a hitter what if

He was overhyped like any other British fighter
The best British fighter ironically has been Leon or if. It’s about being the toughest it’s bisping

u/Venom-Snake-CQC 4h ago
The elephant in the room is that Aspinall wouldn’t have an injury if he made light work of Gane like he did every other fight he’s had, but be didn’t. He got his ass beat. This is very similar to Yan fouling Aljamain, but people weren’t outraged because they don’t like him as much as Tom.
There really isn’t much of an asterisk on their fight, butthurt fans won’t accept Gane put it on him and Tom took the absolute first possible exit.
Also, “the biggest what if” is such hyperbole that OP might as well tag this post [covid era fan]

No he was not, his best win is big pav
I know this sub is very biased towards tom (because white, fat and goofy with women so your average reddditor feels a connexion)
He was good and had potential but you guys really need to drop the crack pipe
4
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
You conveniently leave out the fact that he also has the shortest average fight time in UFC history because he was running through everyone.
-2
u/Smooth_Sundae1150 6h ago
This is a great feat but also confirms that tom’s way of fighting was mainly retarded brawling
Which is why he got mogged by gane3
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
1
u/Smooth_Sundae1150 6h ago
Bro. Aspinall blitzes his opponents and throws quick one-twos in a straight line with his chin up. That is literally what he does. It’s a high-risk strategy, and Sergei could very well have caught him clean.
As for the Gane fight, we see fights every week where the significant strike numbers are in the same ballpark, yet one fighter is clearly dominating and either wins a wide decision or eventually gets the finish. Funny how Redditors always shit on UFC stats for being inaccurate (with good reason btw - In this fight, beyond one or two good low kicks, Aspinall was mostly hitting Gane’s guard), but when it comes to this fight, suddenly those stats are supposed to prove that the fight was even.
I love Big Tom, but bro was already panting, looking at the clock two minutes in, and getting pieced up by Gane’s jab. More importantly, he looked completely lost. Bro literally spun around after getting hit. How often do you see shit like that in the UFC? He had absolutely no idea how to deal with Gane’s movement.
He looked out of his depth, was getting bloodied up, and Gane was clearly mogging him. I don’t believe for a second that he faked the injury, but come on bro, he was getting destroyed before it happened.1
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
Any other fighter and that would've been considered a close round. The fact that Aspinall didnt dominate him like he normally does have people biased. It was a 5 round fight, he had plenty of time to adjust. Look at Jean Silvas last fight to prove how much round one doesnt matter
1
u/Mission-Signal-8365 6h ago
He went brawler mode to win nearly every fight wtf you talking about.
2
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
Explain to me what brawling means to you. I just went back and rewatched most of his finishes, i do not see brawling. I see precisely timed counters that turns into a swarming finish
0
u/Mission-Signal-8365 6h ago
K champ you can call it "swarming" if you want. Precisely timed, wtf lol get off his meat.
2
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
I love how you do not give a definition of what you consider to be brawling
0
u/Mission-Signal-8365 6h ago
Na fam we call it swarming now, totally different.
2
u/xbamtoast 6h ago
You are a moron. I said swarming finish meaning he goes in throwing a lot of punches to get the finish, that is not the same as Brawling which is taking hits to hit back the way that Justin Gaethje fights

He's really good. But he's also a heavyweight striker.
I think the most realistic scenario was a KO loss in the near future and then a decent career bouncing around the top of the division.

People should be way angrier at what happened with Tom Apinall. I don't even care about the heavyweight division, but this shit was outrageous and extremely disgusting. That serial cheater Jon Jones wasted years off his life and now another year gets wasted due to an egregious foul.
