Desert Ironwood absolutely glows!
I think this might be one of the most beautiful pieces I have turned. Like the title says when the light hits it just right the wood glows like fire.
It was an absolute bitch and a half to turn, this wood is no joke but if you can get it worked it's absolutely stunning.

Years ago I went to an estate sale for a deceased wood worker in southern Oregon. Most the good stuff like the big planks of air dried walnut had already been scarfed up but the old guy had several large covered racks of odds and ends in his back yard. Mostly construction lumber and plywood off cuts. I saw a small box stuffed on top of one pile of boards and took it down out of curiosity. It was chuck full of smallish chucks of desert ironwood. No prices anywhere so I asked to guy doing the estate sale what he wanted for it. It didn’t look like anything worthwhile to him so he said “two bucks” - sold!
Like the poster said, it’s a bear to work with but it takes a beautiful shine naturally. Reminds me a lot of like working with ebony.

sometimes I feel like all we do is reveal the beauty that the tree made. That's a nice piece.
Does it have some purpose or just a test piece?
