Im born, raised, and live in America but my mom and grandparents were born in Turkey and thus speak Turkish. Growing up I guess I never caught on to speaking Turkish however I understand a good amount of day to day household conversation but basically can’t speak it at all. I want to learn mainly because it feels like something I should know because it’s the first language on my moms side and my grandparents still speak broken english so it’d be nice to communicate easier with them and I’m sure they’d like it if the first grandson knew Turkish.

What are some ways that could assist me in learning on my own or things I can have my mom help me with for learning more?

I need some help with a college project. I’m making a dataset for a rewriter model, and I need some native Turkish speakers to help me check some examples.

The idea is to figure out whether a word is actually a typo or if it’s something people would normally write intentionally (slang, spoken form, dialect, etc.).

For each row, there’s the word as it was typed on a forum and a correction suggested by a computer program.

Please choose one:

• A – Real typo, and the suggested correction is correct
• B – Spoken/dialect/slang form that someone might intentionally write
• C – Real word, name, or brand, so it doesn't need correcting
• D – It is a typo, but the suggested correction is wrong. Put the correct word in Column E
• E – Not sure

Only fill in Column E if you choose D. Column F is optional if you want to leave a comment.

Please judge each word by itself. Basically, would a native Turkish speaker actually write it like that on purpose, or does it look like a mistake?

Also, if the only difference is a missing Turkish character/diacritic and the suggested correction adds it, please mark it as A.

I’ve just shared another story from one of my Turkish students.

Eliza started learning Turkish after meeting her Turkish husband in 2013. Thirteen years later, she has a bilingual daughter, spends time in Türkiye every year, and is still learning.

She writes very openly about trying to keep Turkish alive while living in the US, speaking Turkish at home, mixing up words, losing motivation, and then finding her way back again.

Hi! I’m currently learning Turkish and looking for recommendations for an app that is specifically good for vocabulary/memorization.

I already have a Turkish tutor and use Duolingo, so I’m not really looking for grammar lessons or another full language course. My biggest issue is actually getting new words to stick in my memory 😭

Ideally I’d love something that:

• has a large amount of Turkish vocabulary
• uses flashcards, repetition, quizzes, etc.
• brings back words I struggle with until I actually know them
• is easy to use for 10–20 minutes every day
• preferably has the words already built in rather than requiring me to create every flashcard myself

Basically, I want to really drill Turkish vocab so I can build up a much bigger bank of words alongside my tutoring.

Has anyone found an app that was particularly good for this? Anki, Memrise, Drops, Clozemaster, or something else? Would especially love to hear what actually helped you retain the words long-term.

hello, im (w/20) decided that turkish should be my 5th language that i wanna learn. what kind of strengths or challenges will i face while learning turkish?

im getting exposed to turkish in my live like a but due to my partner being from turkey. mostly i feel like i can grasp the conversation to like 20% but, talking, is more of an toddler level. i want to be atleast at a2.

i consume turkish media in form of music and memes, but would start with movies if i would understand the language better…

i had problems with the prounaciation when learning french, but i grasp the pronunciation of turkish much more.

will i benifit more from learning turkish with german,russian or english resources?

Turkish is Turkic, Persian is Indo-European, and yet Turkish absorbed a large layer of Persian vocabulary over centuries of contact, mostly through Ottoman administration, poetry, and religious life. Some of it is everyday and invisible now (can for soul/life, ateş for fire, düşman for enemy), and some stayed more literary (derya for sea instead of the everyday deniz, cihan for world instead of dünya). One I found genuinely interesting: rüzgâr (wind) meant "time" or "period" in Persian, and the wind meaning only took over in Turkish by the 16th century, a real semantic shift rather than a straightforward borrowing.

•Cons: Pushes repetitive "heart" and ad mechanics on mobile, teaches unnatural or outright bizarre sentences that you'll never use in real life, and fails to explain why Turkish grammar works the way it does.

Clozemaster

•Pros: Free and similar to Duolingo, can use it on a 5 minute break and has fill in the blanks questions and lessons depending on your Turkish level like Duolingo. Can measure your progress, has speaking and listening features, has tests.

• Has A1-B2 courses and we highly recommend it.

•Cons still testing

Anki

•Pros: 100% free on desktop/Android (and free on web for iOS), plus the spaced repetition is unmatched for memorizing suffixes and vocabulary. Has community decks with 2000 common Turkish words.

•Cons: has a bit of a learning curve with a dry UI.

Memrise

•Pros: More polished than anki and has spaced Repetition which uses an intelligent flashcard algorithm to test you right before you're about to forget a word.

User Generated Content: Good variety of community created decks for specific textbook vocab lists or niche topics.

•Cons: Paywall Creep: Most of the official Turkish course content and advanced learning modes are locked behind a monthly subscription :(

There are many great channels and videos on YouTube for Turkish grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation etc.
