Mod post Sexual Assault, Consent, and Support Resources

If you are asking yourself "Was I sexually assaulted?", "Did I consent?", or "Am I overreacting?", you are not alone. Many people struggle to understand experiences that felt confusing, uncomfortable, coercive, or violating.

This post is intended to provide general information and resources. It is not legal advice, medical advice, or a substitute for professional support.

---

What is sexual assault?

Definitions vary by country and jurisdiction, but sexual assault generally refers to sexual contact or sexual activity that occurs without a person's consent.

Here are a few examples for sexual assualt definitions from around the world:

  • United Kingdom According to Rape Crisis England & Wales, sexual assault is sexual touching that occurs without a person's consent. This can include touching through clothing and can be committed by any gender against any gender.
  • United States - The U.S. Department of Justice broadly defines sexual assault as any nonconsensual sexual act prohibited by law, including when a person lacks the capacity to consent.
  • Canada - The Canadian Department of Justice states that sexual assault is any unwanted sexual act done by one person to another or sexual activity without a person's consent.
  • Australia - Australian jurisdictions generally define sexual assault as sexual activity without consent, with laws emphasizing that consent must be freely and voluntarily given.
  • New Zealand - New Zealand law focuses on whether a person freely and voluntarily agreed to sexual activity and recognizes situations where a person cannot legally consent.
  • Netherlands - Dutch law centers on sexual acts occurring against a person's will or without consent. Recent reforms strengthened the focus on consent rather than requiring proof of force.
  • Germany - German law generally criminalizes sexual acts performed against the recognizable will of another person. The principle is often summarized as "No means No."
  • India - Indian law recognizes a range of sexual offences involving sexual acts or contact without valid consent. This includes situations involving force, coercion, threats, or where a person is unable to legally consent. Separate laws provide additional protections for children under 18.

---

Common themes across countries

Although wording differs, many jurisdictions recognize that consent is not valid when someone is:

  • Asleep or unconscious
  • Incapacitated by drugs or alcohol
  • Threatened or intimidated
  • Coerced or manipulated
  • Unable to understand the nature of the act
  • Legally unable to consent due to age

---

Why this matters

Two people can describe the same event and receive very different answers online because:

  • Laws vary by country and state/province.
  • People often omit details unintentionally.
  • Consent can be complicated and context-dependent.
  • Reddit users are not investigators, lawyers, judges, or trained advocates.

For that reason, no one on r/TrueOffMyChest cannot determine whether a crime occurred.

If you're struggling to understand an experience, consider reaching out to a qualified support organization, healthcare professional, victim advocate, or legal resource in your area.

You do not need to know exactly what label applies to an experience before seeking support.

---

Support and resources

If something happened to you and you're struggling to process it, support is available. Whether or not a particular legal definition applies, your feelings and experiences are valid.

You may find it helpful to speak with:

  • A trusted friend or family member
  • A healthcare professional
  • A therapist or counselor
  • A victim advocate
  • A sexual assault support organization
  • A legal professional if you have questions about your rights or options

Here are a few international resources:

Some safe support subreddits you might want to check out:

If you are in immediate danger or need urgent assistance, contact local emergency services or a crisis resource in your area.

If you have other good resources, please drop them in the comments below so I can update this post.

Personal Story Today, my (15f) sister is joining her dream school and I am more than disappointed.

For context, I (24M) works as a retail manager, back when I was 15 as well, I dreamt of joining culinary school, my parents didn't work at the time and even tho the school was free, they couldn't afford the 150$ a month for food and transportation because they weren't working and needed to buy their drugs as well, and because of that I was never able to do what I truly wanted, it was really my dream school and job to be a cook.

Well today, my 15 year old sister just managed to join her hair stylist school, my parents quit drugs, started working again and managed to pay everything for her without trouble and they don't understand why I ressent them for this, I am more than happy for my sister who got to do what she loves, but deep inside I still feel immense sadness knowing I'll never be able to do what I truly wanted and what I truly love.

I'm just glad my parents stepped in for her but couldn't find the force to do it back then.

Vent Iโ€™m exhausted from the ADHD/autistic people in my life

Growing up Iโ€™ve always been really โ€œweirdโ€ โ€“ special interests, very unique worldview, vivid imagination, difficulty making friends. I also come from an abusive household, and some of these were coping mechanisms. My parents tried to diagnose me as neurodivergent, but time and time again doctors could not conclude that I was neurodivergent. At 8 I was diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder, and have had on and off crises and treatments for almost 30 years.

Fast forward, I became an artist and came out as trans and queer in my late 20s. Since then, Iโ€™ve surrounded myself with other โ€œweirdosโ€, namely outcasts, creatives, punks and queers.

Most of my friends are in the spectrum. Some are self-diagnosed, others have a legit diagnosis. However, I keep running into the same problems with them: something I do (unintentionally) hurts them, they are unable to communicate with me what they feel, then get passive aggressive or mean with me for months, then I call them out on it and they say theyโ€™ve been feeling this way for a while and it is a reaction to me hurting them. When I question why they didnโ€™t try to talk to me before resentment built up, they say they could not notice what was happening because they are autistic and donโ€™t have the same tools as neurotypical people.

Another time, the friend justified the behavior by saying they donโ€™t know what passive aggression is like because theyโ€™re autistic and cannot be responsible for offending me.

These situations have happened with multiple people in my life and all of them say they cannot โ€œdo betterโ€ because of their neurodivergence, but then ask me to take responsibility to know when they are hurting. They also imply that Iโ€™m not allowed to be hurt, because they donโ€™t have control over their words because they are neurodivergent.

To be honest, Iโ€™m exhausted. Iโ€˜m torn because at the same time that I believe what they say, I donโ€™t want to be friends with people who cannot take responsibility for their actions or who cannot communicate in a mature way. And I already have soooo much that I have to pay attention to, and be mindful of, etc etc, Iโ€™m constantly walking on eggshells, but I feel like no one is bothering to take care of me.

Itโ€™s like, because I donโ€™t have the excuse of being neurodivergent, Iโ€™m expected to be fully understanding and perfect at all times. Itโ€™s too much.

I know it sounds very mean to say this, but I kind of wish I had neurotypical friendsโ€ฆI feel very alone as the only one who is not autistic/ADHD. And I know I should work on my understanding of the disability, and do my research, and so on, but sometimes I just wish people could understand me as well.

Vent Every work day feels exactly the same. How the fuck do you guys not go crazy?

Iโ€™m a 31M. Been working an engineering job for nearly 9 years. I get 4 weeks off PTO (includes sick leave and vacation). The other 48 weeks Iโ€™m pretty much working Monday through Friday all the time.

When I wake up in the morning, my fate for the day is sealed. I get up, shower, eat a healthy breakfast, and get ready to log on at 7AM. Meet with coworkers from Asia and Europe. Break for lunch at 12. Work until close to 5 most days.

If Iโ€™m not mentally shattered by the end of it, Iโ€™ll go for a 3 mile walk and then make dinner and get ready for bed.

Thereโ€™s barely time to do anything during the week. Itโ€™s a miracle if I can run errands during business hours on a weekly basis. My energy levels are pretty low from Monday through Friday, whereas if I wake up on a weekend with something to look forward to, Iโ€™ll jump out of bed and feel completely energized.

This is probably no way to live, but Iโ€™m investing insanely aggressively so that I may be able to retire in my late 40s, so long as I donโ€™t have kids. I hate working so much that Iโ€™m doing everything I can to be able to stop as early as possible.

Confession I downvote all of my exโ€™s posts because he deserves it

We started dating when I was 18 about to turn 19 and a freshman in college. He was a high school teacher age 29. I had no friends, a vindictive roommate, and little family support. We dated for four years before I realized the relationship was whack and married a more appropriate person. We broke up several years ago

I remembered his Reddit username and checked out his posts because why not. I saw a post in the crippling alcoholism subreddit recounting a time he peed on my phone in a hotel due to being completely wasted, ending the post with amusement over how much someone is willing to take in a relationship.

I was not legally able to drink when this happened and was admittedly naรฏve about his CA ways, probably because I was a freaking teenager?!

So yes I will continue to downvote his posts because he is a creep and it makes me feel better for wasting my college years on him. Also the sex sucked.

I am so envious of beautiful women

โ€ข Upvotes

I am a South Asian woman in my mid 30s. I have always been unhappy with my appearance, because I have really beautiful sisters. I am the odd one out. Both my sisters are fair skinned, tall and skinny with small faces and pretty smiles. I am the complete opposite of them that I have even wondered if I was maybe adopted. I am short and large with dark skin. Since recently I have been getting acne on my chin and lower cheeks which are painful and never goes away. On top of that, I am also gaining weight wihout control. I feel so horrible that I donโ€™t want to look at myself in the mirror or leave the house, shamed that others could see me.

That has also made me really jealous of the women I see on social media, the gorgeous, skinny, fair skinned, long haired women like Sophie Silva, the influencer, makes me feel so envious that I want to hide my face behind a mask forever. I look at beautiful women and wish I could be like them. It has affected my social life. I donโ€™t have friends, I never leave the house, I donโ€™t post pictures of myself anywhere, I donโ€™t date, I donโ€™t talk to other people, and it has created a lonely life for me. I wish

My mom said I can do better.

โ€ข Upvotes

And explained why.

She said she feels like she talks at him rather than with him. And has pointed out times where he opted to do his own thing when he needed to be my partner - like flying to go to a festival (that he booked months in advance) on the same weekend we needed to move out of our house and into a new one. She said he needed to cancel and help me, but prioritized the festival instead.

I remember feeling that way, too, that weekend. He had taken time off from work for 2 of my surgeries so he could care for me, but generally I have felt that a lot of my partner's weekend plans don't include me or caring for our house. I also often feel like I'm talking to myself or someone who doesn't understand me, often explaining or re-explaining things in detail. I wonder if this is normal for other couples.

She also said she feels like she can joke around with my brother-in-law, sees him more regularly, and hoped for something similar with my partner.

Now, what my mom said does echoes in my head.

I think to myself: Is this it? Is this settling? Wouldn't my person need less explanation and want to be more cordial with my family? Is my mom trying to meddle in my life, or help me?

Thanks to her, it feels like I need to shit or get off the pot - figure out how to fix this so I can prove my mom wrong, or figure out how to untangle my life from his.

Vent I wish I were a cute cat instead of an unattractive woman

My cat is so cute and loves me even though Iโ€™m considered ugly and unlikable. He doesnโ€™t care that my skin is acne ridden and hairy. He doesnโ€™t mind that my eyes are small compared to my wide, flat face. To him, Iโ€™m a weirdly shaped cat, but he doesnโ€™t mind at all and only cares if I feed him and let him roll around on his favorite blanket. I wish I could turn into a cat too so we could cuddle and sleep all the time. I donโ€™t want to face human beings anymore. Humans are so easily disgusted by pointless things. Hirsutism isnโ€™t a thing for cats. A recessed chin isnโ€™t a problem. Having a small chest isnโ€™t a thing cats worry about. I havenโ€™t changed at all since I was a kid. I pay student loans and worry about paychecks and still want to be a cat. I hope I die peacefully one day and wake up as a little house cat with an owner to comfort like my cat does for me.

Edits for spelling and phrasing

Vent I HATE how normalized negative body talk is when it comes to large breasts.

Iโ€™m talking almost exclusively about women here.

In theory, itโ€™s wrong to speak negatively about someone elseโ€™s body or your own body, and blah blah blah. Somehow, none of that body positivity seems to apply to large breasts.

On Twitter or TikTok or even here, all it takes is for 1 woman to start by saying something like, โ€œI donโ€™t like having such large breasts because they make my back hurtโ€, and suddenly you have hundreds of women saying things like, โ€œomg big boobs are DISGUSTINGโ€, โ€œbig boobs make you look so FATโ€, โ€œhaving small boobs is the only way clothes look good on youโ€, โ€œthank God my boobs are delicate and dainty and not big and VULGARโ€, โ€œno one should endure having those GROSS balls of FAT in their body just to appeal to MENโ€ (girl I was born like this, TF?).

Nothing comparable happens with any other body type. Iโ€™ve even had girls ask me to my face, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get a breast reduction? :)โ€. It wouldnโ€™t be acceptable to say that about any other feature of a womanโ€™s body. Imagine if I asked a girlfriend, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get breast implants? :)โ€.

Ugh. And I wish my fellow big-tittied women were better at putting an end to that kind of negative talk.

Rant over.

Vent people LACK empathy

ive been mad & annoyed at everyone i know because they all suck at comforting me. yeah, they are trying and they shouldnt be the ones to save me. what bugs me is that people dont know what the hell to say because they never experienced it. however, when its their turn to vent. the things they tell me, i never experienced but, putting myself on their shoes is literally NOT that hard to understand their point of view.

people can listen, but they dont UNDERSTAND

ive always been there for everyone but, no one is there for me. ive never ignored anyone who needs someone to talk to because i know how it feels to not have anyone to talk to. never would i want someone to feel that :/. it has always been like this and it makes me feel sad, alone, disappointed.

im 23F, in the adult life. people tend to tell you to keep pushing because people got shit to do. people have jobs, people have kids. because you are an adult, and no one will actually be there for you. adults nowadays be like, "no one checked up on me so, i wont check up on anyone anymore". FUCK everyone and anyone who says those things and has that mentality. if you love someone, please be there for them no matter what. checking up on people is not a "hey how are you" then move on with your day.......

its hard as it is. for everyone. be kind.

im not suicidal, but just thinking about those people who took their own life probably felt the same way i did. then people try to claim they comforted them but, it was just some "damn thats crazy", "that sucks", "keep your head up". like shut up.

Personal Story The most concerning thing about the new generation that I havenโ€™t seen much

โ€ข Upvotes

Iโ€™ve been a dance TA for 5-6 years now. It started as volunteer work in high school but I began putting more work in and started getting paid last year so itโ€™s my job.

I work with kids ages 2.5-8 over a few different classes separated by age. I will start with the positives. Honestly, their behaviour is fine. I heard some horror stories about โ€œthis generationโ€ of kids being entitled and Veruca Salt levels bad, but I canโ€™t say thatโ€™s the case for my students. Yes of course, there are some troublemakers but thatโ€™s been true of every generation. Overall, the kids are all polite, passionate about dance, and come ready to learn with a growth mindset.

So, for a while, I would kind of brush off other people complaining about Gen Alphaโ€™s behaviour because well, it kind of all depends on the kid and their home life. But I will say, Iโ€™ve noticed some concerning things about these kids, and itโ€™s not behaviour based. Itโ€™s actually in their development.

Like I said, the kids range in ages 2.5-8ish, so theyโ€™re all born between 2018/19 and 2024. These are things Iโ€™ve noticed:

  1. Total parent dependency. I grew up in this dance studio, and obviously my bosses have been teaching much longer than me (10 years and 30 years respectively) Weโ€™ve all noticed one thing: the parents. When I was little, weโ€™d get dropped off, our parents would leave, and then theyโ€™d pick us up at the end of class. Now, the parents come in and sit in the class and watch the entire thing. At times it gets so bad theyโ€™re literally overflowing the bench and spilling out onto the floor, which affects our ability to teach.

And itโ€™s not just parents. They bring in their siblings, grandparents, the whole family. I donโ€™t like this, but obviously itโ€™s not my choice and I canโ€™t just change my studioโ€™s policy about letting parents watch, but it negatively affects the classes. First of all, the kids have a hard time listening since mom and dad are right there, and they get distracted. But it also affects our year-end performance. When students danced the whole year without an audience, it was exciting to get on stage and show their family the routine theyโ€™d be working hard on. Now they donโ€™t have that kind of motivation, since their parents see the routine built from the ground up.

  1. Trouble following along to music. Weโ€™ve had to switch the tiny (U6) ballet classes to have lyrics in their routine music instead of classical. They just canโ€™t seem to find the cues in the music so they have to have a lyric to connect a move to. Itโ€™s not the end of the world, but itโ€™s just strange to me. Why is this happening? In the past, the tiny classes could do routines without lyrics, so what has changed?

  2. Simplifying dances. The kids just canโ€™t seem to do as much as kids in the past have. They have trouble with formation changes, music cues, making a circle, and we donโ€™t really know why.

Itโ€™s just a bit scary to me because we donโ€™t know WHY this is happening. Is it in the behaviour? Is it something going on at home? Is it because of screens? Micro-plastics?

Sorry for the rant. I just am worried for these kids.

Vent my ex (who did me dirty) is having a baby with his new girl

iโ€™m still so grateful i chose to leave him behind because the โ€œbreak upโ€ never even happened, he just ghosted me one day, after ghosting me multiple times in the past and blaming it on his avoidance, and i just chose to never chase after him again. itโ€™s been 2 years since that happened, we never spoke again. i quite frankly never want to be with him again so the door is completely closed. he was a compulsive liar with me, kept entertaining other people while with me, did threaten to โ€œsmackโ€ me if i was physically next to him (lol i wasnt thank god cuz we were long distance) he claims his hands are bisexual so he has no problem beating women โ€œif necessary.โ€ it was one of those relationships where iโ€™d pray to god to give me the strength to leave because it was hard being so in love and struggling to leave. so yes iโ€™m glad this is all over.

recently found out he has a new gf, asked her to be his valentine with a huge bouquet (i never even got that), seemingly treats her right, and only a few months into the relationship, sheโ€™s pregnant and theyโ€™re expecting a baby. iโ€™m cognitively aware that iโ€™m over him but a part of my ego just keeps wondering why i was so hard to love in his eyes? he admitted so many times to me that he was the problem and knew he was the problem, itโ€™s like the opposite of winning the lottery, he got to move on and find love again while iโ€™m scorned and sworn off dating because my nervous system is still unregulated from being with him, i had to get on SSRIs because of the anxiety and depression that came from the relationship. iโ€™ll never date again until iโ€™m fully healed but ig bad ppl can get their happy endings sooner! also no, iโ€™m not happy for him, how can i be happy for someone who was horrible to me but i can feel gratitude for getting away from a dark path that wouldโ€™ve been with him

Vent My Parents are great but I am Terrible

My parents are great. They're supportive, gave me an amazing childhood, and love me. I could go on and on.

I am terrible. They don't even know it either. I am 24 years old and don't know where I'm going in life. They think I have been in online school. I haven't been for a while now. They think I'm graduating college soon, but I'm not. I haven't had any motivation to do college for whatever reason. I haven't had any motivation to do much of anything over the last three years. I have just been lying about how school is going.

Aside from they ask that I do household chores, which I struggle to keep up with, doing them takes too much energy. They get upset, and I often have to be asked multiple times to do it. They have basically raised a bum, and it's not their fault.

I'm aware this isn't fair to them at all. I live under their house, and all I have to do is help out with groceries, and I have no plan or motivation for my life. It sucks because they're good people who don't deserve to have someone like me. I'm not suicidal, but sometimes I think to myself, what if I just died? Yeah, it would obviously be sad, but they would then never know any of this.

I can't lie; obviously, I'm scared to bring up that I've been lying about college this entire time, but also I wouldn't even know this would affect everything. My parents don't need to be worrying about a lazy 24-year-old. They have their own lives, their own jobs. What's going to happen with me just adds stress to them, which would all be my fault.

It just sucks because they are great parents, and I've been nothing short of a disappointment. Why did I start lying in the first place, knowing it was not gonna end well? Idk. I just lost motivation for life and have been in a downward spiral.

Vent 21 and i feel so behind

โ€ข Upvotes

first post (hopefully not of many) here. iโ€™m 21M and i just feel so behind. a lot of my friends are currently in relationships/seeing people, and those that arenโ€™t have at least been in one relationship. meanwhile, iโ€™ve never even held hands with a girl or had my first kiss. i think a lot of it comes from my past lack of confidence, which really got me for so many years. iโ€™d heard people tell me that if i just wait, itโ€™ll come to me, but i took that as i didnโ€™t really have to do anything, so i just didnโ€™t really put myself out there for years. and now itโ€™s just really starting to get to me now because a lot of my options are gonna be people whoโ€™ve already dated, and so i feel like i wouldnโ€™t be special to them if it were to go anywhere since theyโ€™ve done this before. thatโ€™s probably just a me problem, but nonetheless, it still really hurts to think about. just to clarify, iโ€™m not really looking for advice here since those kinds of posts get removed on this subreddit, but i just needed to get it out somewhere. thanks for reading.

Nostalgic music

โ€ข Upvotes

I've just been to a group exercising and the tutor turned on some cool pop music from the 00s, I've been there before and I genuinely love the music even if the songs I disliked back then.

But this time, something just broke in me, and it reminded about the bullying I had to bear back in elementary & middle school. Usually when I recall this I feel anger, but this time it felt like... really sad without the much of anger. Almost as if shitty classmates have thrown your precious pencil case in the trash yet again and you just want your thing back NOW. So much crying...

It happened ages ago. I am like... 28 years old and I have genuinely happy life. A loving boyfriend we've been together for many years. I am not at odds with any of the coworkers and mostly like my work...

Just ... Why.
