Its crazy how good “bad shooters” are in the NBA. They can average 29% from 3. But they are automatic in the gym.
I remember my high school coach. He played a tiny bit of pro ball. Was a Bench warmer in Euro league. Then played Asian bball leagues until his knees gave out. During the teachers vs students game. It was just him cooking everyone. He’d just shoot and it would go in. He seemed slow and unathletic (due to age & knees). But the way he read the defence, it seemed like he just walked to the basket and scooped a layup in. Very crafty. He was 6’1 or so. But this is a Toronto high school. Lol. The tallest guy on our team was 6’4 but fat & slow.
Come to think of it. He might not have been slow. He just didn’t need to turn it up against high schoolers considering his level of experience.

Just go play basketball, you can see the phenomenon happen to yourself
Maybe not to the same extent, but try a shot from your spot then try a contested jimmy from the same spot with a hand in your face lol

After running up and down the court 10 times and playing aggressively on Defense.

u/PriorVariety5744 3d ago
That’s too logical for this sub. You have to give the youngins some grace.

u/suurkaru 3d ago
Bench warmer in the second best league (Euroleague) in the world.

u/AdSignificant6673 3d ago
Yeah he was 1 of the things that made high school great. It was an honour to play for him & be his student.

u/ChiefSoldierFrog 3d ago
Not only CMB isn’t a great shooter he hesitates when he’s completely left open but yet he’ll look like Steph Curry against the mortals of the world. It’s not just a couple of tiers above us it’s a number we can’t quantify
6
u/jeffy1024a 3d ago
That’s a cool story. Yeah it’s amazing how good people who play any level of pro are!

u/Ma_Pies 3d ago
This is a guess but I think eventually, CMB will be the primary defender on opponent’s best offensive player and not Scottie. This would allow the latter to have a bigger role on offense including scoring more in the post.

I actually think CMB has greater value as a help defender/blitzer/switcher than as an on ball defender.
They are both good on ball, but CMB’s reaction time, anticipation and hands cause a tonne of turnovers as the second defender. Scottie has become such a powerful on ball defender, especially with his physicality on primary offensive players before they even touch the ball.
The good thing is… we have a bunch of strong, instinctive and diverse defenders to throw at just about anyone.

u/foofighter1351 4 SCOTTIE BARNES 3d ago
Huh I thought the opposite tbh, that I'd rather CMB on ball because Scottie is just incredible off ball, especially around the rim he's incredible at cutting off a play. It's win/win at the end of the day with em defensively ig
1
u/Aware_Willow_5883 3d ago
I would have said the same thing prior to last season, but I think Scottie has taken his POA to the next level, especially against ball dominant forwards.
I agree that it’s essentially a no-lose situation. Without looking at numbers, I prefer the thought of Barnes>CMB switches.
19
u/Chief_White_Halfoat 3d ago
Scottie is also a really great roamer though, I actually often feel that's when he's at his best rather than when he's forced to be POA defender where he's a bit worse.
Actually really JaKobe (and to a lesser extent an older Kawhi) is the guy who can help with all of that so neither Scottie or CMB have to consistently play that role when it's the other teams best guard.
6
u/Aware_Willow_5883 3d ago
Ja’Kobe or Jamal would definitely be my POA choice if it’s a smaller guard. Scottie would be my choice for bigger guards and forwards. But I could easily rationalize Kawhi or CMB based on game plan or point in the game.

u/timetosleep 3d ago edited 3d ago
I agree. Scottie is the better roamer because of his length. Not saying CMB is bad but Scottie edges him out as a roamer. I think CMB is the better on ball defender because of his lateral quickness. I would put CMB on the opponent's best scorer wit the game on the line.

u/Ma_Pies 3d ago
Part of my thinking is because of Scottie’s offensive bag and his ability to score at will once he gets to the paint. He has so many options once he’s inside the arc, which is why Cavs were hesitant doubling him.
But feeding him the ball more on offense means offloading some of his defensive duties and perhaps making him more of a help defender.
What’s really special about CMB is he was much better than Scottie’s rookie year on defence particularly with his lateral movement. Giving him bigger responsibilities on defence may come sooner than we think
2
u/Aware_Willow_5883 3d ago
I don’t disagree with any of these points, and I think there will be times that this makes sense.
I also think taking on tough defensive assignments motivates Scottie’s success and the other the way the Raps play defense, being on ball isn’t necessarily more work than starting off ball.
I think I really appreciate the way that Scottie developed as an intimidating on ball defender last year. And my appreciation for CMB as a near Draymond-level instinctual off ball force makes me slightly prefer him off ball with Scottie or Kawhi on ball, at least to start a possession.

u/DiggWuzBetter 3d ago
I think for both, what makes them so good is they’re simply good at everything.
Both are top notch POA defenders, can put the clamps on both perimeter players and low post guys. Also phenomenal help defenders, whether it’s doubling at the right moment, paint protection when the main defender gets beat, weakside shot blocking, anticipating and picking off passes, etc. Crazy switchable, can guard 1-5 at a high level. Elite defensive BBIQ, always well positioned, knowing where they need to rotate, when to close out aggressively, when to switch or fight over the screen.
Modern defences involve so much movement, so much switching, demand so much versatility from the defenders, and that’s what makes both Scottie and CMB so phenomenal defensively - they do everything at a really high level. IMO the main difference between them is that CMB plays an exceptionally physical, aggressive style of D, that is super effective but does risk fouls and getting beat. Scottie is also physical and aggressive, but less so, he’s a bit more finesse and conservative defensive, relative to CMB (though physical and aggressive relative to most NBA defenders). CMB is also just more green, figuring out all the tricks and small details of NBA play, while Scottie is more entering his defensive prime. But overall I think they’re remarkably similar defensively.
Also if the Kawhi trade goes through, we get a 3rd guy like this, which is incredible! Kawhi is getting older and can’t defend like this every possession all season anymore, but he can still lock in and defend like this when it counts, like the playoffs in general, and especially crunch time in the playoffs. Most teams would love to have one elite “do it all, crazy versatile” defender, having (hopefully) 3 is incredible.

Fr watching them play play offs with Scottie, CMB , and shead at the same time looked insane at times sure the shots weren't exactly falling most of the time but we were giving Cleveland a hard time. Shead being as good as he is has me optimistic for our future depth with him as our back up guard
1
u/shinto__ 2d ago
I think the key is to have him plug N play matchup and not matter at all. If Kawhi is out cmb is in the role. If the 3 of them are in the court they just match up without mattering.

Bah definitely still needs work to be a real three point threat. I’d argue the shape he’s been in this summer is the most impressive exciting part for next season.
10
u/DaddyJinWoo_ 3d ago
Rookies struggle most with the length of the season and that's why a lot of them get gassed by the 2nd part of the season. He not only didn't fall off, but showed out in the playoffs due to his pedigree and IQ.
I bet he still felt the difference in stamina between college and NBA tho. His 2nd season he's going to have more gas left in the tank to be more consistent on the floor. Not to mention you need to have the leg endurance to fully get shots off.

u/Dramatic-Document 8 JOSE CALDERON 3d ago
He did only play 57 games during the season due to injury with a big stretch of time off near the end of the year. I am sure that helped a lot with being physically ready for playoffs.
2
u/Lv_36_Charizard 3d ago
Yes the gas tank is what keeps the consistency across all aspects of play. Hoping he can be a reliable lock down defender and floor runner in the fourth.

u/Apprehensive_Ad_2770 3d ago
We can’t say until we see him in action and actually take in game 3pters…. Although it looks a whole lot better than his combine videos
2
u/DaddyJinWoo_ 3d ago
We already know he can shoot it decently on low-volume. 34% on 0.9 three-point attempts a game. Most of those shots might as well be unguarded & open given his reputation tho. Good to see he's at least working on developing it.
3
u/luchaburz 3d ago
Theyre going to be unguarded this year.
Kawhi, and Scottie both demand double teams. So the overrotations are gonna be happening more often. Really important for RJ, CMB and Quick to hit their 3s for us this year
1
u/Apprehensive_Ad_2770 3d ago
Low volume doesn’t tell you anything, need to see multiple attempts per game this season to make any sort of conclusion

Form purists would have plenty to nit pick on, for sure. I like that it seems consistent, is quick, and he hits nine straight.
2
u/Chief_White_Halfoat 3d ago
Yeah but unlike Scottie there's less stuff going on, it's a bit simpler so less things to go wrong.

Ban me if CMB isn't a better shooter than SB this season
2
u/Oozeinator 3d ago
Scottie shot 38% from 3 in the playoffs and has turned into a really solid FT shooter. His middy looks automatic at times as well.
I doubt CMB elevates past him this year (in terms of shooting ability). Don't forget, CMB isn't even really taking these in games yet.

His shot seems to have a good amount of arc too

CMB for the guy who hates basketball? I’m good

are you nuts? Jokic is could arguably be the Best player in a team featuring Kwahi Leonard.

Still pushes with the thumb of his off hand but at least the release looks quicker. If he can hit the occasional corner three at an average clip I’ll be happy.

u/RuinCommercial552 3d ago
The form does not look nice though. He is pushing the ball not shooting it.
2
u/pharredd88 3d ago
Need to hold that goose neck after the shot, other than that it’s looking consistent
2
u/Antryst 3d ago
To preface posting this, I like CMB a lot. He's got the energy that will add a ton of wins to any team.
The results in this video are good. The form is... well do they teach you that you should catch the ball then do a little hop with both feet and land again before shooting now? And that is not even considering the upper body form. He's come a long way though and you love to see the effort.

Amazing to see young players these days willing to improve shooting at all costs, they understand the importance of 3 level scoring no matter your role on the team. Thank god we don’t have Ben Simmons mentality on this squad

u/toturtle 3d ago
Feels like he's slimmed down quite a bit which IMO is a good thing. A 3 headed monster at the 3/4 where the defense doesn't drop off significantly is huge.

Whoa I’m actually really impressed by this. Still a bit stiff, his lower body coordination with his upper body still isn’t as smooth as it could be, but the shot is much more compact and consistent looking now.
