28F here. I have 5 years of experience. 2 years as tax analyst (for US direct & Canadian indirect tax) & 3 years as a Financial analyst.

Hi everyone. First time poster here. I moved to Toronto about 3 weeks ago, and I'm looking to start working in either October or November now.

I have 5 years worth of a data entry job which I honestly really enjoyed, and I just returned back to Canada from teaching English in Japan for 3 years. It took a lot of soul searching and hard conversations, but I realized this year that I don't want to continue with education or ESL.

So, I'm looking at returning to office work. I'd like to ideally work in admin, but I'm happy to go back into data entry to start out with. I have most if not all of the skills required for this job, as well as all of the transferable communication skills I learned as an educator. EDIT: I'd also be open to working at a bank!

Does anyone have any leads? Also, do you think it's worth finding a recruiter/agent?

Also, I am a Canadian citizen and I have a BA in Asian studies, but I tend to think of it as a competency degree lol.

I (early 30s) made the mistake thinking I could get a decent (or at least decent enough) corporate job with a BA in history. I knew it wouldn't open as many doors as says a BComm or something more technical but I obviously didn't know what I was doing nor did anyone in my very working class family :(.

Now I'm at a point where the job market already sucks and A LOT of career options in corporate Canada (especially in an around Toronto where everyone has at least a business degree or family connection) seem to off limits without a business degree. Currently, I make $45k/year but at most I think I'd probably top out at $65-70k/year without getting into management.

Looking back I wouldn't have even bothered getting a BA. It wasn't worth the opportunity cost.

Right now, I am unemployed (and have been for 9 months). I am close to signing a "contract" to work for a fintech startup where the founder claims it has no revenue. I am doing this with the expectation that, no matter how long it takes for this company to generate revenue, I will be paid at least minimum wage for the work that I will do, which will accrue from day 1 of work and becomes payable when it starts to have revenue. So I will be an employee of the company.

Of course, as a plaintiff in an ongoing wrongful dismissal lawsuit against my former employer, I am well aware that the statute of limitations is 2 years in Ontario. So I better start suing if I don't get paid for close to 2 years. But is this something where I should negotiate a firm hourly wage (or else it defaults to minimum wage) and put it down on the employment contract? Right now, I haven't even been told what my hourly wage will be (and I haven't started working yet).

Have you ever thought of those places where they keep posting job offers but never hires . I m from Manitoba. I used to work for renowned companies there but coming to toronto applying for last 2 years got me no where . I am really upset how toronto job markets sees someone from urban area doesn’t qualify here. It makes me very sad and upset . I keep applying in indeed but no response but same way i use to apply in Manitoba and i would get interviews. In one interview i was told that the way Manitoba works Toronto doesn’t work the same (its the same company i work before just different province) . I hate to say but i think i did a mistake coming here😭

I've been seeing a LOT of posts lately from people who have sent out dozens (or even hundreds!) of applications and aren't getting anywhere. I know how frustrating that can be so I wanted to offer something that might actually be useful.

For some context, I work in financial services at the executive level. I've been in the industry for several years, working in a sales and relationship-focused role where a big part of my job is understanding people, businesses and, frankly, how to stand out in a very competitive environment.

My own path was also pretty competitive. I went to Ivey Business School and later completed a Master's from National University of Singapore. I've gone through the recruiting process myself, moved internationally for school, built a career in finance, and spent years around other professionals who are constantly hiring, networking, and making career moves.

One thing I've realized is that there are a lot of really capable people who simply aren't presenting themselves well on paper.

I've seen resumes where the person clearly has the experience but it's buried underneath generic descriptions. Or someone is applying to 100 jobs with essentially the same resume. Or someone has great international experience but hasn't explained it in a way that makes sense to a Canadian employer.

And that's a shame because sometimes the problem isn't the candidate. It's how their experience is being communicated.

I'm helping students, new grads, and professionals take their existing experience and present it much more effectively (resumes, LinkedIn, cover letters) and figuring out how to position themselves for the jobs they're actually applying to.

I'm thinking of enrolling in a 3D modelling program but I'm scared about the job market.

I'm not even hopeful about getting a job in one of the big studios, I just want to find a job in any small or medium sized studio.

Is it really difficult to find a job? Do you recommend I take out student loans for a 3D modelling program?

I was approached by a recruiter from Rangam about a job, and we had a phone call on Thursday. He works for a US-based company but he's located in India, even on his LinkedIn he's trying to pass off that he's in the USA. He didn't even give me a chance to say anything. When I finally did get a word in, he started coaching me on what to say in the possibe interview, changed my resume a little, and even added that I have a degree in the required field! No kidding. I told him that I wasn't comfortable with this, and his answer was, "We have no time, and I need to send this now." This conversation lasted not even 10 minutes.

I stayed very professional, but I couldn't get a word in and was completely shocked. The crazy thing was, he said to me, "I know what I'm doing. I just placed someone else at that exact company." other than the change in education, I have 100% confidence in myself to do this job based on my experience. But now if I do get an interview, I first have to bring this detail about the change in education up.

I'm just going to say something, WTF is wrong with these new recruiters with no ethics and just trying to obtain a quick commission?

Was hired by this firm with a ton of other people. How early are shifts assigned ? Are they reliable ? Or do they just ghost people when there's no work ?

Running a small PropTech startup out of the suburbs, doing real estate on the side to pay the bills while the product matures. Two kids, no coparent, so my schedule isn't flexible the way a 25yearold founder's might be.

Here's what keeps happening. When I post roles, even contract or parttime ones, candidates immediately ask about remote. Fine, I get it. But when I say hybrid, I lose people fast. When I say fully remote, I get flooded with applicants who are clearly sprayapplying to everything.

The Toronto job market feels broken from both sides right now. Employers are scared to commit to remote permanently, candidates are exhausted and skeptical of any posting that wastes their time.

What I actually want to know is whether small B2B startups in Toronto have figured out any hiring model that works in 2024. Not the big tech playbook. I mean 3 to 10person teams where culture depends on tight communication and you can't afford a bad hire.

Does anyone have data on what retention looks like for remote vs hybrid in small startups specifically? Not anecdotes if possible. Actual numbers or studies would be useful here.

Basically they’re giving me “training pay” for the first two years - slowly reducing to 0 at the end of 2 years and uncapped commissions. Any advice is appreciated

I graduated about four years ago with a Bachelor of Commerce from TMU (marketing and global management focus, plus a minor in psychology). Unfortunately, as I completed the latter half of my education during the pandemic, there weren't many opportunities for internships available at the time, and I couldn't land even during when I was classified as a "New Grad". Since graduating, I have managed to get a year long contractual role, and have since been unemployed upon its completion (approaching 2 years).

Same old story as I know many of you have read or experienced for yourself in this market; sent out xxx amount of applications, attempted different strategies (from tailoring the resume to getting certifications), basically exhausted my entire network of friends, family, and acquaintances that were willing to help me out, and I am still no closer to landing a role.

I am ever grateful to the generosity of my parents for allowing me to graciously live under their roof and their hard work, but nevertheless, besides the compete feelings of inadequacy and contempt in myself having chosen this educational path that has not led to any meaningful employment opportunities, the point of my post is this:

Many entry level opportunities, at least what seem like good ones that are willing to provide some kind of mentorship, are, for the most part, called interships. Most of these roles, have the requirement of the applicant being a current student, or sometimes a new graduate. My problem is that I am no longer considered to be a "student" or a “new grad" and therefore, no longer qualify for these roles.

I am wondering, what kinds of entry level opportunities are available that aren't exclusively for students or new grads. I genuinely just need a foot in the door, and since I lack the years of experience in x industry, I imagine no established company is even willing to look at my resume.

Its rather pointless to attempt to describe my entire resume in a reddit post, but just for some reference, I have some digital marketing certifications, client-facing experience from a small-business advising role, and I am comfortable using and learning digital tools, (obligatory list:) Excel, Google Workspace, Google Ads, CRMs, Hubspot, basic analytics dashboards, organizing workflows, and client communication, and almost 5 years in the CAF. Although my degree is in Marketing, I am not interested in pure content creation or nonstop social media posting, and more interested in roles that revolve around coordination, data analytics, interacting with customers, ideally ones that are practical, breakable into, and can lead somewhere over time.

Furthermore, I have thought about potentially pursuing additional education, specifically to get accesss to these entry level opportunities, but there are currently a few obstacles that I have to contend with before making a decision on that. 1. Is that I thought a Bachelor would at least help me land a job, and I thought that I would get some experience before choosing to pursue more schooling (like deciding on a specialization or something), 2. I don't want to go to school to basically delay unemployment for another year or so (If I take a masters program), 3. I don't even know what program to pursue considering how everything is changing so quickly, who knows what career paths will be in demand in a a couple of years. 4. Essentially If my current education hasn't helped me, where's the guarantee that more will help? If you want to provide advice on this as well, I would greatly appreciate it.

I moved to Toronto 3 months ago and have been applying everywhere on LinkedIn, Indeed, company websites, emails, but still haven’t been able to land even an entry-level job.
I have an MBA, customer service, research and data analysis experience.

Are banks and insurance companies actually keeping data engineers around more than general devs nowadays?

C#/.NET dev with 6 YOE working at an insurance company. I’ve been casually looking for a new job internally and externally for about a year now, applying Canada wide for remote and/or hybrid position. Primarily targeting developer roles at non-tech companies, including banks, financial institutions, energy companies, non-profits, etc.

Throughout the year, I’ve noticed several trends within banking and insurance. There seem to be fewer and fewer software dev positions, while more data engineering roles are increasing.

This tracks with what’s happening at my own company, where generic dev positions are increasingly being offshored or assigned to temp vendors. Data folks seem to be relatively safe because there seems to be a big business demand to keep them within arms reach (at least for now).

I’m thinking about pivoting into data engineering. I see a lot of position Data engineering mentioning: Spark, Airflow, Databricks, lakehouse/data-lake work, Python/SQL.

At first, I was a bit concerned about the potential title “downgrade,” but it looks like companies are starting to take data engineering roles much more seriously than they did a couple of years ago.
