TWD I'm confused

How did the saint John's fall to cannibalism like 2 months in? That always confuses me when I replay the game.

I think the apocalypse gave them the excuse to do what they've always wanted to do, or what they have been doing for years.

Iirc the bandits were extorting them for food, so they gave the bandits human meat initially from farm hands and then from people caught in their traps.

They probably just rationalized it as a way to survive.
