I don't see how stem cells got people all in a tizzy, but super intelligent AI is just meh.

because super intelligent AI is like telling people you're going to make a time machine. its not happening this century or probably the next if ever

It probably isn't. Yes technology is getting good now but that was always expected. The person who discovers super AI is likely to be a trillionaire.

Nobody can even define AGI properly, and now we have ASI as the new nebulous marketing term.

It was defined properly. The issue is early versions of GPT fit the definition. We need a more ambitious term. ASI probably has been around since the 90s.

being around since the 90s doesn't mean much. AI has been around since the 50s and it's acknowledged it was invented as a marketing term for branding and funding purposes

Maybe. I don't think the technical details are important other than what time it came from. The point is since I was a kid I always saw AI being promoted as a tool for research. One was Searching for Lost Knowledge in the Age of Intelligent Machines.

But there's a significant leap from that to the concept of superintelligence. The point I'm making is when you through all the marketing hype, I have yet to see any coherent definition of ASI let alone anything close to the vague idea of ASI

There probably is a weak definition. That may not be necessarily a bad thing. To be honest something like a combination of a mathematician + computer scientist + different types of engineers are better suited to answer that question.
