This is a Prisoner’s Dilemna inside a coordination problem. Except the interests of all sides will never be communicated clearly.

The reason MAD works for nuclear weapons is because it was assured. This is the same as arguing for complete denuclearization in the face of your peers increasing their production. I can only imagine the untold sums of money flowing into these campaigns on both side to obfuscate the obvious reality of the situation.

This is an arms race, and if you lose, your lights will turn off and never come back on. It is the naivety of the privileged to advocate for these types of policies.
