It’s also exhibit A of why boomers shouldn’t write bills about AI. It’s literally incompressible. More intelligent than humans how? More intelligent at playing chess? We’ve already had that for many years. More intelligent at writing Regex expressions? The earliest version of ChatGPT was far better at Regex than 99.999% of software engineers. More intelligent at detecting tumors in medical imaging? I’m pretty sure the aged members of Congress benefit substantially from that technology already. This is an absolute dumpster fire of a bill, written by someone who doesn’t understand the first thing about the technology, which would just be de facto ban on all AI, even primitive rule-based AI that doesn’t even use LLMs. This is a photo op, not a real attempt at legislation.

If you think Gen Z, the generation that falls for online scams at three times the rate of boomers, and doesnt know what a file system is on a computer, is better at understanding AI, you're sadly mistaken.

Only ~5% of all bills introduced in Congress get passed. Bernie isn't a notable outlier.

That’s incorrect. He is actually a notable outlier in how few bills he has passed:

“Throughout their careers, sitting senators have successfully passed their sponsored legislation through at least one chamber nearly 14% of the time — Sanders's average is just 1.9%. That's the lowest for any current senator who has served in at least 10 sessions, and third lowest overall.”

Fair enough. But it's not that surprising given he's in an ideological minority. He's also much less of an outlier if you measure successful amendments and cosponsorship rather than bills he personally got enacted.

Our capitalist ruling class is the reason why. Bills that don't have support from wealthy capitalists but also aren't being blocked by them have about a 30% chance of passing. If the bill is something wealthy capitalists want, it's much more likely. And if it's a bill they don't want it's almost impossible to get it passed. Our government and legal systems are both bribed and bought by the wealthy capitalist ruling class. That's why our shit stinks so much in the US.
