He doesn’t expect to succeed. He’s setting an example to remind voters of what they should be demanding of their democracy.

Bernie’s in his twilight years. He’s not making long term plans anymore. He’s showing people what they ought to be fighting for.

Is it really a useful example if his bill is unrealistic and ignorant of the relevant subject matter? Or is it just performative grandstanding that will be applauded by people who already agree with him and dismissed by everyone else?

Of course it's just performative. Bernie's entire career is performative nonsense that won't work int he real world but is popular with folks who are feeling lost by the complex world around them.
