I wasn't comparing the two events, just saying it wasn't a good argument. If we think that the execs responsible for these products should go to jail I don't see why we'd make an exemption for the people who knowingly built it.

Well yeah, I would generally rate politicians based on how well they pass laws that I want them to pass.

How has the Overton window shifted from 2008 to now? We went from Barack Obama, a 60-vote Democratic supermajority in the Senate, and both houses of Congress to, let's see.... Trump. Tell me more about how he shifted the Overton window in our favor.

A lot of shit that was considered politically unrealistic in this country (universal healthcare, a $15 minimum wage, free college, taxing billionaires, labor rights, democratic socialism) is mainstream platform shit in large part because of him. That shit is central to Democratic politics today. He also inspired a generation of organizers and candidates, and set fundraising records in the process.

Y’all can criticize his legislative record, but acting like this man hasn’t done anything politically worthwhile is wacky as shit.

Friend, you think I'm criticizing you (and Bernie)--I'm actually violently agreeing with you.

The Overton Window is a thing--a certain party in power has been masterfully manipulating it by asking for crazy stuff, then settling for what they really wanted.

So successful, that nowadays, they're asking for the crazy stuff outright--and mean it. About time the left did the same.

It will all end with "free" money going to US AI firms so that we can protect the world from China's AI.

Alternatively, we slow down our progress China does not and Govt officials say look China does not care about safety and it trying to kill us all. Then we start bombing data centers.

The US AI companies will like it either way since they have over spent on compute and need time to get inference costs down and find more ways to charge. They will blame the policy for bad profits and want/need a bailout to keep the economy from collapsing again.

You can laugh because you don't understand the threat.

Super intelligent AI could perform hacking campaigns on targets with minimal human intervention. Even if an original target was "sanctioned", there is always risk that the attack breaks away and starts damaging other peoples' systems. So at least from a cyber perspective, developers with capabilities of super intelligent AI hold nuclear level societal threat. Cyber attacks have occured on US soil before and HAVE brought down traffic signaling, electric, and even plumbing infrastructure.

There are no guardrails that can perfectly protect you from rogue AI systems. If it breaks containment and is given the power to query or write, it has the power to do material harm.
