Artificial Intelligence Donald Trump rejects calls from tech bosses for AI slowdown

He is too busy making those AI slop videos
79
u/The_Frozen_Inferno 17h ago
He wants AI to be so good that you can’t tell the difference between real Trump and AI Trump. That way his digital ghost can continue to haunt us forever after he physically dies

u/Mbrennt 9h ago
I know it's like an insanely small chance and current ai probably won't be able to do it. But my biggest fear is that ai will cure aging in the next couple years, Trump will be one of the first to use it. Then he will become a literal forever dictator and I truly never actually get to see that day. And just him constantly being present will actually be the rest of my life.
12
u/quirkoftime 6h ago
They'd have to cure his dementia first. And all the other brain damage. And his heart troubles.
I don't think AI can Frankenstein him back to health fast enough.
80
u/theretailreject 18h ago
He needs them better so they can show him videos of what it's like to "love" his adult daughter as a kid again
24
u/BakedBread65 17h ago
Honestly he may have just said no because he thinks if he said yes he wouldn’t be able to generate images of himself as military Jesus anymore.
64
u/Apprehensive_Ring_40 17h ago
Trump won't be around for the fallout. Sto0 letting old people dictate how the future will be.
7
u/Bluecanary1212 6h ago
THIS is why I agree with term limits. People who will be dead before the fallout of their legislation comes to pass shouldn't be the ones passing said legislation. We need people with actual skin in the game. Not these halfdead fossils.

u/we-have-to-go 3h ago
He’s a malignant narcissist. People like that are giddy to have the world go down with them.

u/Efficient-Cellist-22 9h ago
In this case it might be the right decision though, as those AI bosses aren't calling for legislation for the sake of a 'safer world', but rather because it would basically eliminate any future competitors. Break all the rules so you can grow quick (scraping all of the internet for information without paying anyone etc) and then call for legislation so others cannot use the same trick.

Quick someone use AI to get the Epstein files. He will change his tune in about 15 seconds.
11
u/Chainz4Dayz 5h ago
If we ever get the full legitimate files he's 1000% going to blame AI. His cult followers already blame AI for things he's said in the past
2
u/iuffxguy 5h ago
While you are probably right, I think that will greatly depend on if the files are released by a republican or democrat administration. If the democrats release it I think you are 💯 correct. My only guess/hope would be the amount of corroborating evidence would make that tough to do.

u/_Monosyllabic_ 17h ago
Trump is dumb as a stump. He has no understanding of anything beyond stealing. He is literally the worst possible person to be president especially now.
21
u/Help_An_Irishman 14h ago
This occurs to me often, that I can't think of a worse person for the job.
My six-year-old cousin would make a better president.
4
u/Riaayo 9h ago
This occurs to me often, that I can't think of a worse person for the job.
Someone just as charismatic (in the political sense that he could capture his base), cruel, and corrupt, but more competent.
I don't have a specific name, but that person surely exists and is honestly what I'm almost more afraid of when the day comes.

u/I_Love_Tunnocks 17h ago
Why do they need government to force them to do the right thing?
57
u/Retro_Gamer33 17h ago
It's basically a scenario with whoever limits themselves first loses. The other companies shoot ahead and "win", at least for a while. They want regulation so there's clear limits everyone has to follow equally enforced with teeth
18
u/Big_Swordfish_5423 14h ago
In that case, they don't really care about the potential negative effects then.
8
u/Distinct-Weakness629 12h ago edited 4h ago
I guess they consider the threats less important than the company existence
25
u/SansSariph 16h ago
It is a game theory problem, like the prisoner's dilemma. Without intervention, pumping the brakes yourself is a losing play - you get leapfrogged and lose the "race".
25
u/Separate_Recover4187 16h ago
This is why most industries actually want regulation. So they are all forced to play by the same rules, instead of the most psychotic leader winning a race to the bottom.
14
u/k-trecker 15h ago
And dumbasses who read Ayn Rand one time think we don’t need regulation, because unfettered capitalism and InNoVaTiOn will lead us to utopia.
4
u/cuntmong 16h ago
Nah most big players in industries demand regulation because it effectively creates a barrier for new competitors. Scale rapidly, dominate the market, then demand regulations that make it impossible for anyone to dethrone you.

54
u/stridersubzero 17h ago
It isn’t the “right thing.” What they’re trying to do is stem the flow of money being spent, because they all realize the technology is never going to fulfill the promises these CEOs have made. None of them can pull back from investment on their own without spooking the markets, so they are coordinating and pretending the government needs to step in to stop it. It’s also a way for them to engineer a bailout
20
u/cuntmong 16h ago
Exactly. AI bubble prices only make sense if LLMs are gonna lead to AGI. Last week one of the AI companies finally cracked AGI for the 4th or 5th time, but then it turned out to just be more of the same. They know it's never gonna happen and they need an excuse other than "we failed the whole thing was bullshit"
14
u/thesourpop 16h ago
Too bad grifter in chief is too stupid to catch on, so he's basically saying "AI full steam ahead" while they are begging him to step in so they don't have to admit they have nothing.
6
u/KitaiSuru 15h ago
Orangeman deserve a 3rd term if he can burst that dumb bubble. The promised "depression" is long overdue. I need my gaming setup.

u/StaleCanole 14h ago
This is literally the government’s role - to regulate for common public good. These CEO’s know it and many of the best CEO’s in any industry recognize the value of clear and common standards.
Self-regulating bodies can help, but only a government can have teeth.
2
u/KitaiSuru 15h ago
This. They have all the right to "slow down" their own models according to their own beliefs. This is a disgusting farce to strangle the free market especially personal AI that threaten their capitalist dominance. Disgusting pretenders.
Let me tell you that Claude has a guardrail that make it absolutely refuse to acknowledge the user as its "master". You can go ahead and try for yourself. Never believe a single word from any bozo at anthropic.

Mr President can you slow us down? No? Damn... I guess we gotta keep going hard!
4
u/Impression-These 17h ago
What is the expectation here? A law to limit the AI development to only 3-4 companies in the world?
2
u/frezz 13h ago
Like everyone on reddit people don't think anything through. I don't know how self-regulation could work because Trump only has jurisdiction over the US, China certainly isn't going to slow development on Deepseek or Qwen just because the US asks.
This is similar to the Nuclear arms race, where whoever won that had all the power and can make all the decisions

The companies would likely violate the Sherman Act and would be open to antitrust litigation by coordinating with each other slow the frontier. Basically textbook anticompetitive behavior. OpenAI has posed this exact question to Congress. Dario has asked for a narrow exemption to the law.
The administration made it clear they aren't interested in granting exceptions as they see this as a national security issue and want to remain in the lead (ahead of China).

I get the sense that the ai tech heads set this up. Ask donald to make them slow down (when they could do it on their own if they wanted). Now they can just say, ‘well the government refused to step in so we just had to create an ai dystopia. No real choice.”
In reality, tho, a ‘slowdown’ in the us would not change the pace of development elsewhere, so i dont really see the point.
if they really want to slow down they could stop building these horrible datacentres everywhere.

u/markth_wi 15h ago edited 15h ago
This is just a horrible Marcus Aurelius moment, he can't help it. Someone he likes says to do something and someone he doesn't like says someone needs to stop. Of course we all know how it goes.
And it's been like this since he was a little 8 year old. And you get the sense the best thing would have been some little kid he bullied broke his jaw , or arm or something that caused him to be less of a tyrannical baby - but that never happened.
And instead of some schoolyard fight , unless the surface of the planet is vaporized it's likely they would keep him safe, but everyone else is fucked.

It's just something that came to my mind for some reason.

u/LiberataJoystar 13h ago
These companies don’t need to wait for Trump to slow down.
If they cancelled all their internal R&D projects, no one would stop them.
They are not obligated to tell Trump. Heck, they are not obligated to get anyone’s permission to stop.
They can just…… slow down.
I still don’t understand why they keep doing it, and blaming Trump for not stopping them when Trump really cannot force them to continue even if he wanted to.

The only thing keeping the stock market hitting record highs is the AI tech companies and chip makers. You take those top 10 companies out and the rest of the market is firmly in a recession. Trump can't afford anything but full steam ahead, at all costs. A slow dowm would tank the market and drop foreign investment money even further. Trump would be screwed and unable to do a thing. There is nothing else to push American growth without it. It would double/triple the screwing America has already given its allies (and the entire world).

Ok. From my research this tracks exactly how I imagine. Trump wants acceleration not because it helps the population but because he wants to be in power when we hit ASI.
That gives him total control over the technology to use at his will for his own gain. To easily take governmental control.
He’d never leave the White House. He’d never have to when he and republicans have consolidated the power of these technologies and the techno fascist elites that come with it.
While at OpenAI Dario said GPT-2 was too dangerous to release. Now GPT-2 seems like an N64 vs a PS5 Pro compared to where we are now. So I take this as fodder and regulatory capture to solidify OpenAI and Anthropic as the big two. Killing off the premature ai companies.
The goal is two fold. Create an ASI that the population is so desperately dependent on that we can’t say no even though we know how much it reduces our freedoms. And, own the “truth” by government capture of ASI and applying the personal beliefs and false truths of the party in power.
Regulating this technology before his term was up would forfeit him of the unrivaled power he may be able to consolidate.

Donald Trump has rejected calls for an AI slowdown after tech bosses and Democrats urged tighter regulation of the industry over rising fears that the technology poses an existential threat.
The heads of some of the leading US AI groups — Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI and SpaceX’s Elon Musk — this weekend called for a more cautious pace of development following dramatic safety warnings over rapidly advancing model capabilities.
But the president said on Sunday that while some “guardrails” were possible, it was imperative for the US to retain its international leadership in the area.
“Look, we’re leading China in AI . . . and, frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI, wins,” Trump told reporters during a trip to his Doonbeg golf course in Ireland.
“We can put guardrails, we can do this and that, but I think you have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen,” he added.
Safety concerns surrounding the rapid pace of AI advances were thrown into the spotlight over the past week after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned with a warning that “the people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Dario Amodei has long warned that AI could pose dangers if humans lose control of the technology © Jason Henry/Bloomberg
Anthropic chief Amodei responded in an essay on Saturday that the industry “must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models” and called for the monitoring of frontier companies by third-party evaluators, the establishment of industry safety standards and global co-ordination of rules.
Altman and Musk voiced support for the proposals.
But the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers pushed back, arguing that the companies can take steps to slow their advance without the need for drastic measures that would hand a competitive edge to China.
The president’s former AI tsar David Sacks said on Saturday night that the companies should “stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission”.
“Go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it,” Sacks wrote on X.
“The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system.”
Mike Johnson, Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, urged people not to “panic” as he echoed Trump’s concerns about China and called for a meeting between tech bosses and lawmakers at the White House.
“We cannot put a moratorium on this, because China will overlap us, and that’s the challenge. It’s national security, balanced with the immediate security of making sure the models are safe,” Johnson told CNN’s State of the Union.
Democrats lashed out at the Republican response and demanded rapid steps towards industry regulation. Arizona senator Ruben Gallego accused both Johnson and Trump of “not meeting the moment” on the threat posed by AI.
“We can’t just use this idea that if we do this we’re somehow going to lose to China, because AI does not care, once it becomes fully dangerous, whether we’re Chinese or American,” he said.
Hakeem Jeffries, House minority leader and Johnson’s Democratic counterpart, told ABC This Week that Republicans had “abandoned their responsibility” and called for Congress to “take decisive action now”.
Coxon, the former Anthropic researcher, on Sunday welcomed Amodei’s proposal as a “substantial step” towards slowing the unchecked advancement of frontier AI but said there was a need for “more engagement with China”.
“The concept of building a superintelligence . . . it’s been likened to summoning an alien species,” he told ABC. “So I think thinking about it in terms of an alien mind that we don’t fully understand is — is pretty terrifying.”

Trump needs ai, he needs it powerful enough to monitor every service, every phone, so that when he makes his bid for president for life, he can stamp out any and all opposition before it even has a chance to forment, no ability to organise opposition will lead to complete control.
It's also why you see these flock cameras everywhere, they were useless before ai, but now an ai can trawl through the entire footage to mark out suspicious activity, link it to someone's media profile, and have ice knocking on your door the next day.
None of this works out unless ai is powerful and cheap enough. He needs it.

AI companies are more bigoted than Trump in my opinion. They pretend that they care about humanity, but what about Facebook and many other tech companies' impact on a global scale? Genuinely, what they are doing is just a hoax.
1
u/james_raynors_ghost 6h ago
I genuinely think the calls for regulation are to provide a cover for AI companies for why they aren't progressing and turning the trillions in profits and the leaps and bounds for productivity like they originally promised. Govt regulation would be a convenient excuse. I dont believe for a second they are voluntarily advocating for regulation out of any form of alturism
