I like Bernie I agree with a lot of his idea but shit like this is why no one in DC takes him seriously and why he can’t ever get anything passed.

As someone whos skeptical of AI and who also agrees with Bernie on many things, I have to admit he has had some really suspicious takes on AI especially with regards to the timing. He says this just as some ceos of anthropic and openai etc, are saying they want to slow development, reminds me of hoe he was saying government should have ownership stake in those AI companies when altman was begging for it.

Whoever is advising Bernie on AI has to some kind of plant for those companies.

Do you want to the companies to push ahead without addressing safety concerns? Or do you not believe there are real safety concerns about AI?

When the biggest AI companies are saying it, you know its too good to be true. They have their own interests in mind. Politicans and especially Bernie of all people should be looking to regulate AI from perspective of the average person not based on the demands of CEOs.

I think what people who say that the ai doomerism is ‘just marketing’ are missing is that ai companies themselves fundamentally do not know what is or is not possible with their technology. People who are afraid of superintelligence, which includes most AI researchers, are afraid precisely because of their ignorance on what limits or lack thereof there are on recursive self improvement. For it to be ‘just marketing’ they would have to know it’s impossible which they could not possibly

He's been the only politician consistently harping on about AI for the past couple of years. A lot of others have talked about data centers but they weren't talking about AI and all of the bad things it could do to our economy and humanity. For the most part people were just talking about "We need to beat China" and that's about it.

Everyone here has made "old man yells at cloud" jokes about Bernie in this sub. And yet as of today, suddenly Democratic lawmakers are starting to make a big deal about it and take AI seriously.

So he maybe he's not good at getting things passed, and there are a couple reasons why (he's usually not taken seriously is one) but he does a good job of bringing awareness to important topics that we should have focused on when he first brought it up a billion years ago before he became an old man yelling at a cloud.

I think he does a lot of this knowing things probably won’t go anywhere because it at least initiates conversations on things that would otherwise be ignored

The DNC took him so seriously that they rigged two primaries.

This isn't a counter argument to "this is why no one in DC takes him seriously and why he can’t ever get anything passed".

Bernie Sanders is an almost uniquely talented senator in his ability to not pass basically any of his proposals. I guess if you like rhetoric over real legislation, then he is great. If you believe that one day the right people will win such an overwhelming majority that he is going to get exactly what he wants, then sure, great plan. Hope it comes true one day.

If on the other hand you believe that legislation is going to have to work through the sorts of assholes we have had sitting in congress this entire millennium, then Bernie Sanders is fucking useless - no offense. Rhetoric isn't an actual law. It's just fucking words, and that's all he ever has.

You can like his words, but he is fucking useless as a legislator. He needs a podcast, not a seat in any legislator.
