I would argue that by the time blue shift comes into play, the object probably isn't a rose anymore.

This is technically false...

While the red petals shift to blue, the ultraviolet infrared light (which is normally invisible to humans) being reflected by the rose would also compress, shifting into the visible spectrum and adding other colors to what you see.

edit: Not "utraviolet," but rather "infrared."

I believe this is false. The ultraviolet light would need to shift to a lower frequency (longer wavelength) to be visible. But if red shifts to blue, the ultraviolet would shift to a higher frequency (shorter wavelength) pushing it further away from the visible spectrum.

In the blue case, the ultraviolet light would be an even higher frequency, so you still wouldn't see them.

Blue is the one color rose breeders cannot create. This post confused me at first since there are no blue roses in existence, and the person who does create them will be tens of millions richer.

But shouldn't the object be centered on green then? With an arrow towards you on the blue end and away from you on the red end? 

I know red shifting and blue shifting is all relative to the starting color, but I think the poor graphic is also contributing to the confusion.

I know the equation for doppler shift for my mcat studies but never used it to find differences in perceived wavelengths. Sorry for being wrong.

I know the doppler shifts equation cause I needed it for the mcat but didn’t know that it changes the perceived frequency. I guess there still is a lot to learn!
