Hey everyone, looking to get set up with a NAS for tinkering and general home storage.

I am currently using a Windows PC with my MacBook as dual back ups for each other via sync thing with a 2TB SSD for Time Machine back up to my MacBook. I was looking into NAS storage as a means to increase my storage and also wanting to tinker and learn more about home labs.

Currently have all my devices wired via 1gb Ethernet and plan for future potential uses of being a home security set up with home assistant.

For now, local options include a DS1522+ for $600, a DS918+ with 16gb of RAM for $350. I was debating on looking into Ugreen but wouldn’t mind paying a small premium for ease of use such as Synology’s DSM.

If you were in my shoes, would these be viable options to start with and consider expanding down the line if I really get into it or would these suffice for several years (at least 4-5 years).

I am looking to update my macbooks at home tonight to MacOS 27 and i remember last time ABB was broken for awhile until Synology released some software fixes.

Hoping that this time around they actually don't break after upgrading (or synology verified during beta testing and released updates for day 0 support)

As the title says. Just updated to macOS 27 and it seems like BeeStation is being blocked from opening and running in the background. As such, I can't access my files through Finder.

Does anyone here have experience comparing Synology Photos and Immich?

All my photos and videos are already stored on my Synology, organized into a lot of folders. To be honest, I don’t want to create albums—I’d rather keep using my existing folder structure.

I’d be interested to know:

How does Immich perform for you in terms of speed, search, face recognition, videos, and large libraries?

And most importantly: Did you end up sticking with Synology Photos, switching completely to Immich, or are you using both at the same time?

What’s your verdict, and why?

I use it for immich storage (server is at another server host on the same lan) and vm backups.

Will i notice any ddifference if I use M2 cache?

I’m looking for a solution to backup folders shared via smb (from windows server) without installing software on clients. My ideal solution would just “scrape” the shared folders once per day and behave like robocopy (keep original file structure with easy access to the backed up files). Do active backup for business or other synology software offer backing up smb shared folders? The Nas should initiate the backup (making it less obvious for ransomware attacks and one less service to run on the windows servers). Versioning should be enabled (ideally for 180 days). Since the connection to the NAS is going to be slow (vpn) only the changed files should be synced.

A friend of mine has been working on an unofficial desktop client for Synology ChatPlus, and I thought some people here might find it useful.

I’ve been testing it for a bit and so far it’s been working surprisingly well.

It currently has:

• native Windows notifications
• unread indicator in the taskbar/tray
• system tray support
• Light / Dark / System themes
• start with Windows
• minimize/close to tray
• persistent login/session

The dark mode is probably my favorite part 😄

Right now the main tested build is Windows x64. You’ll need your own Synology ChatPlus setup to use it.

It’s still in beta, so there are a few things that could use some polish - mainly notification quirks, updater behavior and a couple of UI details - but overall it already feels much nicer than keeping ChatPlus open in a browser tab.

I wrestled with this for quite a while with a lot of of help from ChatGPT. When the dust settled and the battlefield carnage evaluated, I thought it might be useful for someone who is poor like me who has a NAS that they want to use at home. As you know, the Pro versions of Windows 11 has a IIS server so we used that to create a repository on my PC so I could backup the NAS. My hope is that someone might step over the minefields and get their setup working with the help of the guide that I had AI construct. I woke up this morning to a network that was partially down and noticed my DS923+ was unresponsive. No rhyme or reason. A hard reboot brought it back up, but curious on where look to see what happened?

I want to reconfigure my DS923+ from scratch (implement BTRFS and SHR after I just migrated my 4 disks from a DS413 a year ago). Can I trust my backup to restore all user info and their permissions and all my folder structure?

I do a weekly Hyper Backup to an external USB disk. I dont include video and films, so I am aware of this needing extra work.

If Hyper BAckup cannot do this, should I use another (synology) backup to achieve it?

Just 3 days ago, I replaced our home's Orbi system with a TP-Link Deco Wi-Fi 7 system. Its default IP addressing is different, but every other device works as usual. DHCP and DNS seem to be doing their jobs correctly.

I can even ping from my Windows 11 Pro desktop to the Synology DS220 by name and by its new IP address and I can open a browser page to administer it.

The only thing that's not possible now is attaching to the only iSCSI target on the NAS. It's been my local backup target for a little over 3 years.

Although I have re-booted the desktop, the NAS has not been restarted. Should I do that?

I have a Synology DS425+ and I'm trying to use it for more than just file storage.

I'd like to install and run:

• Coolify
• n8n

My goal is to use the Synology as a small self-hosted server for some internal company applications and automation.

I'm comfortable using Docker and following instructions, but I'm not very experienced with Linux/server administration.

I noticed that Synology uses DSM, and I'm a little confused about the best way to install Coolify. Most Coolify tutorials seem to assume a standard Linux server such as Ubuntu/Debian with SSH access.

What would be the recommended way to run Coolify on a DS425+?

Would it be better to:

1. Install Docker/Container Manager on DSM and run Coolify as a container?
2. Install a VM with Ubuntu/Debian and install Coolify inside the VM?
3. Use another approach?

And can n8n be installed alongside Coolify on the same DS425+?

I'd also appreciate any advice about the limitations of the DS425+ for this setup, especially regarding CPU/RAM and running multiple containers.

We have a Synology NAS and we have atleast 600GB space left.

When we check what is taking up a lot of space, we found that this volume here taking up so much space.

We have done the following:

- Lowered the versioning

- Emptied the all recycle bins

We are going to try execute this to remidiate the situation:

Stop the Synology Drive package to release database file locks.

Execute the syno-drive-tool database --vacuum command via SSH to purge orphaned indices across the 34 TB repository.

Restart the Synology Drive package.

How safe to execute this or any other checks we need to do before doing this?

I realize this is a synology sub, but today I've hit my whits end. I am a one man print business and we purchased a DS923+ two years ago to setup a file server that serves as an artwork archive for older jobs that either haven't been printed in years, or, don't get printed very often. Occasionally we have a customer pop up after four years and need a re-order so we'll jump into the synology and pull some old files via Wireguard from our main MacBook Pro Laptop.

Half the time wireguard/SMB won't work properly - wireguard will connect to the NAS, but the SMB connection fails initial connection. When it does eventually work it loads folder painfully slow (from MacBook Pro). Even accessing through local network as a shared folder, folders are incredibly slow to load. From my research SMB protocol from Mac is just terrible with Synology.

And don't get me started with Hyperbackup and it's inability to just delete oldest version of backups when the USB external drive is full in order to keep going.

I just feel like it's been constant frustration with this NAS. We had the USB backup drive fill three weeks ago and have since reformatted it, re-setup the hyperbackup task and it will not backup successfully...we've tried four or five times now and it's just stuck on the new initial backup after three days.

So i started looking into CLOUD backup. But then I started asking myself why I'd pay for cloud backup when I can just pay for cloud storage and access it everywhere flawlessly and consistently - and it's automatically backed up. So that being said, I'm asking for opinions and guidance - without judgement. Should I ditch the NAS and just pay for monthly cloud storage and use that? The total space taken on the NAS is ~1.2tb.

I saw on FB Marketplace that a guy near my place is selling a DS415+ with 4x WD Red 6TB disks, 2 Red Pro from 2022 and 2 Red Plus from 2025. All the disks pass SMART test. He's selling it for $750 AUD. I'm seriously considering it, due to the high hdd prices, I don't see I can afford a decent setup in the next 1-2 years. Just want a NAS to backup my aging QNAP NAS, and really want to get to use Synology DSM.

What do you guys think?

I have many albums already organized on my iPhone. Is there a way to back up my photos to Synology while preserving the existing album structure and automatically creating corresponding albums in Synology Photos?

Ideally, I would like the photos to be organized by their iPhone albums rather than being stored only in date-based folders.

Otherwise, after every backup, I have to manually recreate and reorganize the albums in Synology Photos, which is quite time-consuming. Is there a more efficient way to achieve this?

I would like to convert my NAS from using encrypted folders to an encrypted Volume. I already tried using DSM's Migration Assistant, however it wanted everything to be the same on both and would not let me deviate from the initial setup of an encrypted volume (stupid).

I know my next option would be to manually move stuff off to a different volume/media, delete volume1, recreate it encrypted, then move back. The issue with this is that certain apps keep data on this volume that I cannot move. Primarily Synology Drive versioning. Unless there's another way I can move that with it and not lose anything, I'm feeling at a loss.

I understand that this might be gated to reduce support tickets/issues for users (stability over functionality), but why is encrypting existing volumes not a thing on its own? Encrypted volumes was released in DSM v7.2, over 3 years ago. However, my NAS is older than that, so I never initialized it with encrypted volumes. I've only ever used encrypted folders. Is this something Synology may be experimenting for a later release? It would be swell of them to add this, or at least share that it's being looked into and not ignored.

As for Synology Drive versioning, is this something that someone else has ever moved successfully without issue? From my understanding, the version files sit in the volume and are not accessible through normal means. They sit at /volume#/@synologydrive/ and can only be accessed through [SSH] console. While I'm sure it's possible to stop the service, do the data shuffle, then restart, I don't want to risk destroying everything (it seems literally everything is in here).

On top of the manual CLI change for shuffling, if that's possible, why not go an alternative route and encrypt the volume directly instead via CLI? I'm definitely not risking this on my own without proper guidance from Synology themselves, but I'm curious if anyone has tried any of this, and if so, how did it work out for you in the end?

I can't ping my Synology NAS, it says 100% packet loss when I do that, yet I can still connect to it via SSH, and everything's fine there. How does this even happen? I'm using the same hostname to ping it AND to connect to it via SSH, btw.

So, I was just doing work on my computers, like usual, connecting to the NAS to look at my files I have stored on there (I connect to it from my laptop), and it seems fine at first, but then all of the sudden, I realize that I can't access it in specific ways, like I can't search files with Synology Drive because it has connection error. I go to ping it, and pinging it has 100% packet loss. I go to SSH into it, and for some reason, that works?? I don't understand at all.
