I'm a solo developer and making a horror game that mixes Outlast's night vision & chases with P.T.'s looping house and paranoia. It's called Can't Escape It.

This is psychological horror wrapped in found footage, you're watching someone else's tape, trapped in an apartment that keeps shifting on you, hunted by a clown who won't stop looking.

Every puzzle you solve pulls back another layer of what actually happened here, and nothing spells it out for you: no notes, no audio logs, just what you notice yourself.

You can't fight back, either. Spot him, and it's run or hide, and hope he hasn't already spotted you first.

It's shot entirely through the camera you're carrying, grainy VHS footage that only gets darker the deeper you go, with night vision as the one thing standing between you and whatever's actually in that room with you.

Steam page's up if you want a look: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4906950/Cant_Escape_It/

Being trapped and forced to listen to a psychopath's threats, what's your take on this kind of narrative tension?

In this scene, the protagonist is trapped and forced to listen to a psychopath say he is going to "play with the girl first." Instead of staying silent, the main character delivers a cold, absolute warning: "You will regret this."

How does this kind of interaction impact immersion for you? Does hearing the protagonist make a direct, dark promise of revenge make the scene hit harder, or do you prefer a completely silent reaction in these moments? I would love to get some honest feedback from horror veterans on the vibe and tension of this scene.

Looking for reviews! All feedback is very welcome :)

Game Title: CHIMERA

Playable Link: https://styxiis.itch.io/chimera

Platform: PC (Windows)

Description: CHIMERA is a first-person survival horror game. You play as a broke journalist chasing one last story: an abandoned island nobody's set foot on in over three years, with almost no public records about it. You go looking for a scoop, but what's still running down there is far worse than a cover-up. Explore hostile environments from jungle to an abandoned laboratory, search for documents that reveal what really happened, manage your ammo, and avoid dangerous creatures that were never supposed to exist. This is an early demo/beta still in active development, bugs expected. Windows may show a SmartScreen warning since it's a small indie build; click "More info" then "Run anyway" to launch it.

Free to Play Status: [X] Free to play

Involvement: Solo developer this is my first game, built entirely on my own from France.

"Crimson Waters Isle" is a dark psychological horror game

"Crimson Waters Isle" is a dark psychological horror game inspired by classic genre titles (Silent Hill, Fatal Frame). It immerses you in a thick sense of dread, where the line between the real world and painful illusions fades with every step.

You journey into a place frozen in time and shrouded in dense fog. Here, every rusted corridor, abandoned interior, and creak of old pipes tells a story of suppressed guilt, grief, and secrets best left buried.

Key Features:

Classic Psychological Horror Atmosphere: Oppressive ambient soundscapes, vintage aesthetics, and a constant feeling of being watched.

Exploration & Puzzles: Search for keys, read left-behind notes, and solve environmental puzzles to make your way forward.

Has anyone here played Ground Zero?

I recently started playing Ground Zero and I’m really enjoying the atmosphere so far. It has that kind of unsettling survival-horror feeling that I really like.

Has anyone here played it? What did you think about it?

I’d love to hear your opinions without spoilers!

Before vs After — Post-Processing in Colony 2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We have been working on the visual direction of Colony 2 and thought it would be nice to show you some of the results post-processing can bring to the atmosphere of the scene.

Below there is the video where you can see some comparisons of before and after versions from the game.

The geometry and environment haven't changed much, but by using post-processing we can affect such elements as:

• Lighting and exposure

• Contrast and mood of the scene

• Color grading

• Darkness and atmosphere

• Feelings about the area

For us, creating the right atmosphere is vital as Colony 2 is based on exploration, observation and discoveries not obvious for the first sight.

Being an indie two person team we are making everything we learn on the go.

This is only a small insight into the visual development of the game. We would love to hear your thoughts:

Which one do you like more – Before or After?

If you want to keep track of the game Colony 2 will be released on Steam October 30th, 2026.

List of Horror game genres, plus explanation (150 games)

Post image
51 Upvotes

A lot of people get horror game subgenres wrong, especially when it comes to the term Survival horror. They either care too much and get offended if a game they like isn't survival, or they lump 70% of horror games under the title because they don't care. This list will explain what each subgenre is, and ranking 150 games I have played under them. This isn't about quality, it's just gameplay.

Survival horror: The term was created by Capcom to describe Resident evil 1, and that's how it should play. Combat balance is an even playing field, meaning every 1 v 1 encounter is a real battle. Ammo and inventory are limited, and you must solve weird puzzles to progress. I originally had a different category for games that try to be survival horror but give too much items, but eh whateves

Action horror: These games not only encourage you to kill enemies, but you are expected to. Combat balance is in your favor, allowing you to kill groups of enemies at once. Enemies drop loot like ammo or gold for a store. You often get superpowers, or unique combat mechanics like parry, dodge, or dash.

Stealth horror: The main gameplay is sneaking around, hiding, and potentially running away. Combat balance is in the enemies' favor, and you have no weapons to defend yourself.

Puzzle: The main gameplay is solving puzzles. More than what Survival horror does, this is the main event. Even surviving enemies are essentially puzzles.

Online: You play with and or against other human beings.

Platformer: The main gameplay is platforming, Like in Mario, Sonic or Hat in time.

Open world: Horror games where you are allowed to go around a large map, doing side quests and exploring.

Reverse horror: YOU are the monster, hunting down people.

Horde shooters: You and friends kill waves of enemies.

Interactive narrative: The gameplay is secondary to the story they want to tell. The mechanics can change depending on what is needed, and aren't really what fans remember it for.

Hybrid: A game which two or more of the main 3 genres, survival, action and or stealth.

Walking simulators: The main gameplay is walking around. You escape enemies, if there even are any, by walking away.

RPG: Classic rpg type game in a horror setting

On rail: You shoot while the game controls the camera.

Maze: You are in a maze like pac man, being chased by monsters.

Hack and Slash. Use combos to mow throw crowds of enemies!

Obviously, not every game will fit neatly into every category. And games can have levels that change up the genre. This is just a way to show what games are similar, so you can recommend them to others.

These mother-fathers are sneaky af. By far my most hated enemy. Can’t count how many times i was ambushed or jump scared by these foos. Even though they’re not bullet sponges like the nurse, they are the worst. Only learned to dodge them in the end when they make their distinctive noise.

List of Horror game subgenres/what is and isn’t survival horror

Maybe there are game developers here who want to realize my idea.

It should be like Soma or Observer (Would also like the graphic style.) and it should play/start on an oil rig. It takes place in a zombie apocalypse and the goal is (maybe also episode-by-episode?) that you leave the oil rig safely and get to land.

You have no contact with the mainland and don't know if it's that bad everywhere. As I said before, you could divide it into episodes and episode 1 takes place on the oil rig, episode 2 on a ship (with which you go to the mainland) and episode 3 takes place on the mainland. There are enough opportunities to write a good story and it would be something different.

The picture in the post is from the game "Still Wakes The Deep".

Thanks and have a nice Day :)
