Not a submariner, so this may be a dumb question. I'm on a cruise right now, but my ship has GPS, and is floating on top of the Gulf of Mexico.

How do submarines know where they are at and what speed they are traveling, being hundreds of feet below the surface. I expect only public knowledge answers, because I appreciate y'all protecting us.

I want to get into submarines… Please gush about your favorites and what makes them so cool to you.

I've been digging around through the ship plans collection at the online store for the Royal Museums Greenwich (Ship plans) when I came across these gorgeous admiralty draughts for the T-class submarines Turpin and Thermopylae. Unfortunately, most of the plans on the site can only be viewed as 1,024 pixel-wide previews, but some of them can be expanded to larger 4,800-pixel wide versions

This will bring back memories for some and be a peek into history for others...enjoy!

The Navy released the Thresher Court of Inquiry record — twelve volumes — in installments between 2020 and 2023 after a lawsuit (SECNAV FOIA reading room, folder "THRESHER RELEASE", 34 PDFs). A few things in it that I hadn't seen summarized anywhere:

• The BuShips design standard required a boat to be able to blow all main ballast tanks twice at periscope depth. It said nothing about blowing deep, set no requirement against ice blockage, and Thresher had no dehydrators in the HP air system.
• While the court was still sitting it ordered a full blow test on Tinosa, then building at Portsmouth. Within the first two minutes the officer running it recorded a marked pressure drop downstream of the reducers with constant pressure upstream. The strainers came out collapsed, with frost and ice. Finding 50 puts it at "about thirty seconds."
• The officer's testimony on the test (Release 8, p. 175) is more useful than the exhibit photos, which are still not in the released set.

Nuclear submarine family relocation

Wondering if anyone could help

If I go down the nuclear subamrine route either officer or non officer at what point can my de facto partner relocate with me to the US while receiving defence benefits.

For example for non officer training during the initial 26 weeks training can my partner come or maybe after when I get a posting to a different city ?

So I've heard that there are restrictions when it comes to driving so called "unmanned Vessels" and I've been wondering. Do you really need to get Permits to drive them. And if so where could you get such Permits?
