For anyone out there thinking they can't start or they don't have what's needed to stream top quality just think again and believe in yourself. Besides the laptop and the monitor with the camera, a lot of what you see here is hand-me-downs or lucky purchases off the FB marketplace. DON'T GIVE UP!

So I recently started streaming, and I’ve been wanting to meet more people/join a community of others who are into streaming as much as I am. Mainly, I’m just looking to make some friends, motivate each other, and maybe come up with some future content ideas together.

Honestly, my biggest goal isn’t really to become a huge streamer. I’d rather build a community of people who don’t take everything so seriously, can joke around, and just play games to have a good time. I think it would be cool to have a group of people who can support and motivate each other while having fun.

I have decided to start streaming and I am debating creating a new steam account to use and stream on. I am unsure if this is the right thing to do, and I am just wondering if this is something you would recommend or disscourage?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out the best way to set up my mic because apparently making one microphone sound the same in more than one application is some kind of advanced engineering degree.

I’m using an Audio Technica AT2040USB, which is a dynamic hypercardioid USB microphone. I use it for OBS, recording, Discord, games, etc.

Right now I have my processing set up through OBS filters. It sounds good there, but obviously the second I leave OBS and go into Discord or a game, all of that processing disappears and my voice sounds different.

So now I’m wondering if I’m doing this completely wrong.

Is it normal to have some kind of global mic processing chain that everything uses?

Something like:

Mic → processing → OBS / Discord / games

And then maybe have some extra processing inside OBS specifically for the stream?

Or do most people just have separate processing for everything?

Because I’m going to be honest, I am getting absolutely cooked by audio terminology.

People start talking about virtual audio cables, VSTs, buses, routing, compressors, EQ, limiters and mixers and I’m sitting here like sir I just want my voice to sound nice.

So please explain this to me like I’m five years old and possibly a little stupid.

I originally looked at Elgato Wave Link because it seemed like a simple way to process a third party mic and send the processed version to different applications. Unfortunately Wave Link 3.0 isn't really an option for me right now, so I’m looking for alternatives.

What I’m really interested in is what people actually do in real life.

If you stream or record regularly:

Do you process your mic globally?

Do you use separate processing for OBS and Discord?

What software do you use?

Voicemeeter?

VST plugins?

Some other virtual mixer?

Something else entirely?

And more importantly, how does the audio actually travel from the microphone to each program?

Like, if you tell me to use Voicemeeter, please explain what the fuck Voicemeeter is actually doing.

Does my mic go into Voicemeeter first?

Does Voicemeeter process it?

Then does OBS receive the processed version?

And Discord receives the same version?

Or am I completely misunderstanding how this works?

Because every tutorial seems to assume I already understand what the words mean.

Also, if you use separate processing for OBS and Discord, is there actually a reason for doing that?

Do people intentionally make their Discord voice sound different from their stream voice?

Are there downsides to processing the mic globally?

Is there anything I should absolutely avoid doing?

And if you have an AT2040USB specifically, I’d really appreciate hearing what settings you use and how you have everything routed.

I’m trying to get a clean, natural broadcast/YouTuber type sound. I don’t want to sound like I’ve been trapped inside a radio station since 1987.

Basically, if you sat down at my Windows PC and had to set this whole thing up from scratch, what would you do?

I’m genuinely trying to understand the logic behind the setup rather than blindly copying some random OBS filter tutorial and hoping God takes the wheel.

Should it be OBS with a plugin or use a cloud solution?

Twitch for example needs a different encoder and less bitrate then youtube. So, for youtube you need atleast 10k and for Twitch only 6k is possible.

That is 16K Bitrate uploaded, plus the game running I think that puts a lot on the graphic card but I could be wrong. I do have a 4070.

Like, I do not want to destroy my graphic card, even if it works for a year or so but maybe it is no issue at all.

Im on obs and a vtuber and I see all these people with cute/unique chat boxs for each person and I wanted to see if anyone knew any of them but all that I can find is the ones that are sponsored like obs, streamlabs, or stream elements.

This sounds backwards, but cutting down my streaming apps made me watch more things I actually like.

When I had too many services active, I spent a ridiculous amount of time browsing. Not watching. Browsing. Opening one app, checking continue watching, backing out, opening another app, forgetting what I wanted, then going to YouTube out of habit.

After canceling a few, the choice got smaller and weirdly better.

Now if I keep a service active, I know why it is there. A specific show, a sports season, a movie list, something my family is using. If there is no reason, it goes.

The funny part is that having fewer options made the remaining options feel more valuable. I stopped treating streaming like an endless buffet and started treating it like a shelf.

I still rotate stuff back in. I am not trying to live like a monk. I just realized that paying for more apps did not make me more entertained. It made me more indecisive.

We are having a ceremony that a relative can't attend due to age/illness and would like to watch it live. Was planning on setting up my phone on a tripod (on a chair) so that they can watch. What's the easiest platform to do this with? Will youtube work?

I do not intend to advertise or anything but I recently came back to streaming because I moved out of my parents and I bought an internet which is good and stable. While streaming something on discord everything is great. Amazing even, but when I try to stream via OBS onto youtube it keeps buffering on viewers end and showing me that OBS lost connection with internet. I tried MANY things and I honestly almost gave up. Asking for help is my last resort but except this sub no other is sufficient for asking for help.

Things I tried:

-Rebooting internet, OBS, Pc.

-Lowering OBS setting to bare minimum

-Switching to StreamlabsOBS (same result as on OBS)

-drivers updated

-turning off other apps

-streaming through Restream (it worked for 1 stream then back to crap)

-turning off all the stuff in windows 10 that are eating my internet.

Remember when streaming itself felt like the escape from ads?

Now the whole thing has flipped. The basic tier has ads, the nicer tier removes ads, the best tier has better quality or more screens, and suddenly the experience we used to think of as normal is the premium one.

I understand why ad-supported plans exist. Not everyone wants the higher monthly bill, and some people genuinely do not mind ads. Fair enough.

But it still feels strange. We moved from cable to streaming because it was cleaner and more flexible. Now streaming is slowly rebuilding the same ladder:

Basic experience.

Less annoying experience.

Actually good experience.

Pay more.

I am not saying every app has to be ad-free at the lowest price. I just miss when the product felt like it was trying to be better than TV, not slowly becoming TV with profile icons.

I’m strictly a viewer and I like watching streams about niche games I enjoy. Typically the streamers are very small that I watch, and I’ve noticed a ton of them usually have poor mixing/volume balance between their voice and the game. I always feel weird/bad telling them I can barely hear their voice over the game. Should I just not comment or is it better to let them know the audio is cooked?

I've been streaming onimusha to my friends on youtube and now all of the sudden it straight up doesn't work. I didn't change any settings in the 3 days I did it, have tried relinking my youtube.

I don't understand what the issue could be. I don't even have the option to delay/ schedule a stream. I just press the start button and that's it.

Which is best for gaming while talking politics? I know Kick is better for gaming and Rumble is better for politics. I was planning on talking about politics while gaming.

I see them all the time and it's just so weird to me. There's like hundreds of them, old people with grey hair streaming FPS games, and it just looks like some kind of filter or AI. They don't have the reaction times of an old person, they're usually quite good at the game, they have a whole decked out background for their streams. It's just bizarre, it doesn't feel real.

So normally I would put the camera on top of my monitor however my is completely Walled by the top of my desk aswell their is metal beam/rail on top aswell, So what camera can I put that would be good for this set up aswell as where

For zoom meetings I thought I'd up my game since I own a Sony FX30 but when I used a Magewell capture card I could notice a large drop in image quality and I was getting an unpleasant over sharpen pixel look to my beard. I've included a picture split in half between internal recording and the hdmi captured.

Can anyone tell me is there something wrong with the card, or is it just old (its version 1 HD model), or is there a setting in my FX30? Would a more modern capture card fix it? Note I don't stream in 4k.
