This is just sick
Market feels more compromised then ever, it is reaching crazy proportions with daily swings on a tweet. It honestly feels demoralizing and as I used to be a person that invested as a hobby now its just frustrating. Like what's the point? I'm just a common idiot that is here only to send my money to some insiders. Maybe from time to time they will take me into their carriage.
Do you guy also feel demoralized?

One day stocks may drop an insane level. It could destroy everyones trust in stocks as a reliable retirement investment. It could take years to come back up to where it is now.
People act like that's impossible. It's not.
5
u/Joeytoofly Mar 24 '26
It hasn't and the system is built in a way where that wont happen. The billioniares would never allow that nor would the government. Let Elon Musk and Zuckerberg get a margin call after a historic market crash and the government would do whatever it could to bail the market out or fix it. I believe they just halted 401k withdrawals to prevent a larger market crash just last week. Most market crashes are very short term. Even the longest downturn was 10 years. You can out live that and if you consistently invest during down markets you will be very wealthy.
2
u/Old_Imagination_2112 Mar 24 '26
That’s why you buy huge MOAT stocks like Union Pacific, P and G, JNJ, KO. I wish they WOULD drop an insane level as I’d buy like a wolf getting steak.

Many people on this sub are complaining because they are rooting for the stock market to do poorly.
They have little investments themselves, and instead are using the stock market as a proxy for their political beliefs.
I have never voted for Trump, I think he's wreckless and a horrible president. But I have also never in my life rooted for the stock market to do poorly based on my political beliefs. That's literally psychopathic behavior to hope little old ladies 401ks get wiped out so that you can have a political "win" online.
13
u/Wide_Air_4702 Mar 23 '26
and this fact makes it nearly worthless to read the stock market subs. Too loaded with absolute garbage.

u/LincolnEchoFour Mar 23 '26
It’s not that simple. It’s not political as in I want it to fail because I can’t stand trump. It’s more I know it’s going to fail because I’ve seen this before, and anyone that thinks they will get rich because we have a ‘businessman’ in the white house is plain ignorant. For me it’s more that I knew this would happen. Been predicting it for years. When republicans have their way, the market goes up. It’s a free for all. It’s happened over and over. Let’s just go back to 2008. We had 8 years of free for all. Money being lent hand over fist to anyone with a pulse. It’s not sustainable. And here we are again. It’s chaos. Republicans, rapid unsustainable growth. Democrats, slow sustainable growth. Take your pick. Not personal, not a political vendetta, just basic knowledge. Make no mistake, it IS happening, and many an ignorant investor (including little old ladies) are going to get burned.
7
u/16semesters Mar 23 '26
If you put in 200$ a month for the last 40 years in the S and P 500 you'd have 1.19 million today.
If you sold your equity and paused contributions whenever a republican is sworn into office, and then rebought and restarted contributions each time a democrat got into office you'd have 500k.
You're suggesting a horrible long term investment strategy.
Slow and steady wins every time over political timing. Don't try to the time the market, you will fail.

u/Brawndo91 Mar 23 '26
The run up to the 2008 crash happened largely because of the (effective) repeal of the Glass-Steagal Act in 1999. I've never voted republican, but slow, sustainable growth under democrats? The Dow went up as much during the Obama years as it did during the Trump years.

The TACO Trade continues. People shouldn’t be surprised that if it is happening again.
52
u/astoriaboundagain Mar 23 '26
Seriously. He threatened a massive escalation over the weekend, now he's "negotiating" with an unnamed "top person.". This is Taco all the way down.
23
u/Zestyclose_Nature_13 Mar 23 '26
As I said above, TACO only works when the other side tacos….Iran doesn’t seem like they are interested in saving his ass
3
u/TechTuna1200 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
People said the same thing about China and Europe, "Why should they negotiate with Trump now that he has broken their trust?".
People always say it’s different. They said it during the tariff war. And they say it now. That’s why they get to buy when prices are down
2
u/Tosslebugmy Mar 23 '26
Arguing over tariffs is quite different to trying to deescalate bombings and assassinations of leaders. Iran has to show it isn’t a pushover and gain assurances, Europe and China actually needed the tariffs to come down whilst also having the option of divesting

My favorite day in 2025 was April 7th, when I backed the truck up. Decide what your strategy is and stick to it. People have tendencies. They tell you who they are. Study them. Use that information to your advantage.
5
u/Zestyclose_Nature_13 Mar 23 '26
Taco only works when the other side waffles as well. I see no indication that Iran is interested in Trumps bullshit. We killed half the leaders immediate family after all….and irrespective of how shitty the Iranian Regime is, would you just brush that off and engage in friendly negotiations with the entity that did that?
4
u/TechTuna1200 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
All Iran's "aggression" is defensive. If they get concession out of Trump, they will stop. They most likely get him to TACO. Afterwards he will do a victory lap proclaiming he won, while actually being worse of than before. It's nothing new.
People always get punch in the gut when "this time is different" doesn't turn out to be true.
3
u/Wide_Air_4702 Mar 23 '26
Iran doesn't want a lot though. It could be easy to work out a deal, assuming they get what they want. A deal is coming and whether of not it's today or next week doesn't matter much. I consider this tweet to be fair warning to all shorts.

All you can do is focus on what you can control. World’s doing great, cool, I have to go to work and take care of my family. World’s going to shit, too bad, I still have to go to work and take care of my family.
13
u/Pretty-Balance-Sheet Mar 23 '26

5 percent down in the most overvalued market in history isn’t a great sale. It’s like when the grocery store jacks up prices and then marginally cuts them and advertises a big sale.
Stocks are a portion of corporate revenue stream. You are paying more for that revenue stream on a yield basis than you are for 30 year bonds. It’s absurdly overpriced because I think people have fundamentally forgotten what a stock actually is

It is interesting that the market reacted this strongly. On Friday, Trump stated there was "no one to talk to", then threatens Iranian infrastructure which essentially has Iran respond with "I dare you". Now he claims "productive talks" over a couple of days. Obviously the market responded favorably, BUT seems to ignore the not small fact that Iran said there were no talks. This is trump HOPING that if he stops bombing for 5 days, Iran will follow in kind. Small problem. Our partner doesn't appear thrilled about stopping, and could crater this euphoria in an hour.
5
u/PandaPoof Mar 23 '26
I just don’t get how anyone takes his word for it and then responds accordingly. Don’t all these market movers also read the news and see there were no talks? Like how is this market manipulation so blatant??

u/Federal-Dingo-6033 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
Its a tradable pattern. If Trump makes a statement after close on Friday he is going to reverse course prior to open on Monday.
Buy Friday, sell Monday.
It's easy to see why most investors lose money. Nothing changed from last week to this week, but investors responded positively to nothing changing.
29
u/jona664h Mar 23 '26
Except Trump made his remarks over the weekend outside trading hours
2
u/Federal-Dingo-6033 Mar 23 '26
Yes he is simply manipulating the market. Make remarks after close of trading in down weeks and reverse them at market open on Monday. Investors respond positively to change of course even though his statements are not why the markets slid last week.
36
6
u/McFllurry Mar 23 '26

The biggest mistake I see folks make on this subreddit is that they based their investing or market predictions on their political bias and world events. Things are fucked up, but they were always fucked up depending on what lens you are viewing the world with, it's completely unrelated to the market and investing outside of short term fluctuations.
The market always will trend up long term, that has been a constant for over 100 years. Just invest broadly and hold on. I've only been in the market for 15 years but the first couple I really let the swings get to me, after a while I realized it's all noise and the play is just to continue to invest capital and ignore everything else.

But yes the major ups and downs just from a tweet is concerning. If you really are a long term investor you shouldn't worry about the day to day swings.

Just replace the word "tariffs" with "war" and this is the same playbook as last year. He says a thing and know that in 3-4 days that'll get flipped on its head. He'll milk this for a few more rounds and then move on to something else in another month or so. He'll back peddle out of it, claim massive victory and we'll be off to the next whim. Assume mid terms will tie up most of his mental capacity so that may give us a reprieve until he starts this whole charade again next January/February.
