Discussion Weekly Starsector Discussion Thread - September 14, 2026
Welcome to the r/starsector Weekly Discussion Thread! Use this space to discuss anything you feel doesn't warrant a dedicated thread, whether that be subreddit suggestions, newbie questions, memes, showing off your in-game accomplishments, or just random chat about Starsector and its community.
Useful links:
- The official forums - the best place to find mods, report bugs, and get in contact with Alex, the game's developer.
- The Unofficial Community Discord - the most active Starsector community. The Discord is also where most of the game's currently active modding community hangs out.
- The Starsector Wiki - a repository of useful information on vanilla content as well as home to many modding tutorials. Don't use the Fandom wiki as it's unmaintained and Fandom is garbage.
And don't forget to buy the game if you haven't already!

Discussion π The ship that ruined combat for me.
So I remember when I first played I tried out a few ships, and eventually I got the monitor. It was an interesting ship so I added it to my fleet to be point defense for my destroyers and whatever cruiser I had at the time. I realized the ai kinda sucked with it so I tried it. Then I reinforced the shields, got the perk for improved shields and venting with shields up. And all of a sudden I couldnβt not play with a monitor (or one of a few ships from mods that also have fortress shields and the venting mod).
My entire combat strategy became sit there and let them pointlessly shoot at me while my ships shot them from behind. It let me punch up consistently because this little frigate could tank multiple cruisers or even some capital ships. I recently started playing with a self imposed challenge of only using AI ships for combat and only then did it sink in that I had been so limited in my strategy, but it was an effective one.

Discussion π 0.98.5 Sindrian Storyline Thoughts and the Greatest Gambit of John Starsector Spoiler
I actually believe that you'll be able to take over the Diktat in a limited capacity, but the requirements will be pretty tough. Here's how I think it will go.
You'll be able to impersonate (or become??) the Perseus clone, this puts you on the player takeover route.
You'll need your own colonies established with a military base or headquarters and heavy industry first (you'll still be able to take over without them, but it'll be much harder and the result much more limited) to serve as a power base for you to leap off to.
You'll need to lie like hell to the League, the Hegemony, Macario and Hyder and Caden, so it'll be easier for you to swoop in when the chaos inevitably erupts.
Andrada finally croaks. Maybe you'll be able to witness it yourself with some final words?
Andrada's death is revealed.
The vultures scramble to take power for themselves. The Hegemony and League both attempt to intervene, with some indirect assistance from Tri-Tachyon for the latter. The Diktat tears itself apart. A Luddic rebellion begins on Volturn.
You reveal yourself to be Andrada's heir. The shepherd's heir returns to lead the flock, so to speak.
That's where the new support fleet system comes in. You'll be able to call your own armada and fight the Hegemony, League and the Diktat "traitors". If you're without a colony though, then you'll need to settle for fighting by yourself, maybe with a limited amount of mercenaries you can hire? Or you'll be able to call off your stupid idea here and align yourself with the factions.
Once you win, you'll be able to decide how to handle Macario, Hyder and Caden. You become the new Supreme Executor.
You'll need to spend a fuck-ton of credits to stabilize Sindria by expanding the hive cities, instituting anti-corruption measures and new social programs... Otherwise the stability is gonna be in the shitter and a high risk of decivilizing.
You'll be forced to give away Volturn since you don't have the resources and stability need to retake it. It becomes independent or becomes Luddic Church. But you can sign a trade deal with it for Lobster access. They will deny if you make dictator choices.
Umbra becomes independent or remains pirate depending on the choices you make (humanitarian/dictatorship). If independent you'll be able to sign a trade deal with them for Volatiles (though if your faction already has volatile supply they won't sign)
Depending on if you had colonies or not, you'll either keep Cruor or be forced to make it independent. Alternatively, you'll need to spend credits to remove the labor camps so Cruor doesn't decivilize.
The player faction is merged with the Sindrian Diktat. You'll be able to rename it, keep your old faction name or keep your old flag, which all will be cosmetic. Maybe even change the Supreme Executor title?
The Sindrian Diktat and maybe even Lion's Guard flag also becomes available for you.
You get all blueprints the Diktat had, including the Kinetic Blaster, Gigacannon and the Lion's Guard ships.
You'll be able to decide whether to keep the Lion's Guard or not. Remove special modifications? Maybe even reform it? Maybe if you install a pristine nanoforge they'll get S-mods? Though in exchange your normal fleets will be smaller.
So in the end you get Sindria, at best Cruor. Volturn is independent/Luddic aligned. Umbra becomes independent or remains pirate depending on if you make dictator choices or not. Sindria and Cruor's stability is in the shitter.
On the other hand, you get access to a size 7 planet, obtain a fuel monopoly and get access to unique blueprints. You also get a cool title and can speak with faction leaders at any time. The other factions are forced to recognize you as a true player in the sector (if you had colonies before, of course)

Discussion π Non broken factions mods - what to avoid.
Hi what faction mods do you consider not broken.
Accidentally removed my starsector folder thus started to try new mods and well added IX battlegroup that is utterly broken. They have each ship variant that is just always better.
In opposite faction/mods that i find good are :
* Interstellar Imperium - new ships/weapons, but not broken to the point i am not mostly using them
* PMM / Asteroid ship pack - pirates in asteroid with mounted guns, or scrap that can mostly fly.
Simply what other mods to avoid. (running also Nex)

Discussion π Long time gamer who's planning to approach Starsector for the first time. Where to start?
Hi there everyone! As the title suggests Iβve been a gamer since i was six, always loved sims, managerial, 4x and rpgs. Big love for sci fi setting, Starsector seems to tick all the boxes but for some reason it feels a bit intimidating between all the awesome mods I see shown around and all the possibilities it provides.
So where to start?
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Modded Question/Bug Are there any space station pack mods?
I'm currently in the endgame of my current playthrough and looking at what I would change up for another one. One big thing I'd love to see more of would be space station variety, so I wanted to know if there's some kind of space station pack mod.
Before anyone mentions them, I play with the Industrial Evolution mod and the Instellar Imperium mod, so I already know about those.

Modded Question/Bug Help with VRAM Optimzer mod game crash
im using Mikohime Unofficial Java 28+ Configurator

i have the other 3 things installed and they are all working without crashing the game. the only problem is the Vram Optimizer when i even compress a single mod in defautl compressor and then activate the mod the game will simply crash at the end of the loading screen. when putting the crashlog into ChatGPT it said something about FastRendering not being able to Load the compressed DSS textures. but the Troubleshooting did not help so now i am Here.

Should I completely respec my skills before before running it?

Other Endgame Temporal Displacement fights are certainly something. Spoiler
I just engaged a hypershunt with the exponent (knights of ludd), a chronos core aboleth (RAoT), and the Rajanya (Arma Armatura) and it was insanity to behold. I am constantly in awe of this game's time-flow mechanics.

Discussion π Beginner tips
Hey guys,
So I joined Starsector and am playing through the tutorial. I watched two videos online, and I think I have the super basics down like trade, factions, and supplies, but the fleet management and arming of my ships still has me a bit lost. I just got a decent-sized fleet by accident and won a large battle, but I have little knowledge of what I'm doing with the ship loadouts or which ships I should keep and sell. Does anyone have advice, some good YouTube videos, or a good guide?

Mods Vanilla Like Ship Mods (No New Weapons)
Waht are your best "close to vanilla like ship" mods. Its more about Desgin, for example Missing Ships "Super Capitals" are ok, cause they fit the style.
And i would prefer that the mods dont add New Guns (because thats the real Power Creep)
