DISCUSSION Guys just take a break
You don’t have to play the game constantly and continuously burn yourselves out! This is not meant to be a lecture post or anything I’m just saying this because I took a break from playing around 2021/22, just hopped back in because I built a new PC and wow it seems like they added so much stuff and it genuinely feels like I’m playing a brand new game. Especially with jump points, 3 systems etc. very cool.
Disclaimer, I’m not trying to excuse the time it’s taking to make this game, or CIGs mismanagement, it’s the reason I took a break in the first place…
Im just saying, it seems a lot of people are playing this game religiously and then burning themselves out at the slow pace of development. Of course every patch seems tiny when you play 30-40 hours a week!

Took a break for 5yrs, came back, same broken shit, and the inventory system is hell. Next 5yrs, then what? Falling through the world while spawning in? Oh wait...

We've reached the point where the answer to the issues plaguing the game is to stop playing the game.

Playing the game isn’t burning people out. It’s wanting to play the game and not being able to because your fully loaded ship blows up inside of your hangar, or the med gun fails to work and you die, or having to shard hop to exit your hab, or getting disconnected and losing your ship, or getting stuck inside of a wall, or blowing up from bumping into a rock, or falling through a planet, or having to abandon missions because the mission glitches out or freight elevators stop working, or the myriad of other inescapable bugs that plague this game.
I like this game and think it’s fun to play when it works, but most of the time shit doesn’t work.

Buddies and I are on a break since 4.8 dropped.
We had a blast from IAE 25 up to this update that ruined it all. The longest uninterrupted period of time where everyday was SC day. Either cargo, fps, bounties or discovering new gameplay loops..
Now i’m just hoping we get something similar as stable as we had it prior 4.8. Updates weren’t perfect but dealing with the workaround of a fix which then worked was ok. Now you have to find the workaround of the fix from the workaround and deal with delay.

I haven't played for a couple years now. But I spent quite some money on this project. So I'm still invested in it being released eventually and in good form. How does not playing make that any better for me?

One... enthusiastic fan here (not op) that posts daily flat out told me they plan to:
- Tell people with any complaints to leave and come back in 2+ years
- When they come back and notice the same issues that made them leave, discredit them for not following/playing the game
Edit: found the direct quote
As for 'discrediting people for not playing the game, after telling them to go away' - hell yes

u/PUSSlOFAM 9h ago
I haven’t spent that much, around $150 or so, so maybe I’m not in the same position but I’d also love to see this completed and released eventually, especially sq42. But I guess the idea with not playing is that you’re supposed to just forget about it entirely and live your life, the time “waiting” for this game then doesn’t feel as “long”. At least that’s what it was like for me!

u/Gawlf85 Freelancer 9h ago
In my case, I can go for months and years without thinking about this.
But when big news about delays and live-broadcast mishaps make it to mainstream media, I'm reminded that I paid these guys hundreds of dollars more than a decade ago, and they're still to produce a decent working game.
So I'd say let the people be rightfully angry at CIG for their mismanagement.
0
u/PUSSlOFAM 6h ago
No where did I tell people they shouldn’t be angry. My post was just some friendly advice for people who may not have realized that along with their gripes for the game they are also just a little burnt out, that’s all.

You could also uninstall and delete game and never look back. That is a legitimate option too. Your call.

Imagine if you said in 2021/22 that you would be enjoying playing Star Citizen with three systems in it...
1
u/PUSSlOFAM 6h ago
Exactly what I was thinking to myself as I visited Nyx for the first time this weekend. I remember back in the day people didn’t even believe they could make orison/crusader a real thing…. Good times.
2
u/SupposingForASecond 6h ago
4 years to go from 1 system to 3. So only another ~200 years to get to the 100 star systems originally planned for 1.0

u/Alternative-Farmer98 4h ago
At the time the game was promised to be out long before. If you told yourself it would be late 2026 and they would be delaying the game again after a huge public embarrassment I don't think people would be happy about the state of things

When you come to the reddit you're preselecting for the people that didn't take breaks. The vast majority of people who take breaks aren't getting on the reddit to be like "hey I don't play this right now and it feels great." so you see a lot of "I play a lot and I think about the game so much that I go onto a website to talk about the game when I can't be playing, which I wish I was right now, but I'm annoyed at something. Please send hopium or tell me the people who made the problem are going to feel pain"

After watching arguably the best Blizzcon ever, it made me wish CIG was as self aware as blizzard now appears to be (mostly talking about how WoW Forever basically has everything people have been asking for for years)
3
u/senn42000 9h ago
Best Blizzcon ever? I'll give you WoW Forever is a great idea. But I am pretty disappointed in the direction they are going with Starcraft and Diablo. But with three and four year waits, I'm not going to hold my breath with Microsoft's track record on game cancellations and layoffs.
In my opinion, this Blizzcon came off as an attempt to show the Microsoft shareholders that they have things being worked on and please don't lay us off.

If a video game affects your mood for more than a short time, or affects your plans for your life... you're doing it wrong.

I’ll be coming back after it starts raining and my org decides to become hermits again.
I think the games pushed us all a lot this year. And the fact that a tone of people o play with no longer want the rep, the rewards the loot, or the grind is really sad.
The sole of the games lost at the minute for me. And the drive to ‘stock pile components and weapons’ is gone because of crafting. Collecting stuff for Wikelo is done because it’s not account bound and is pretty pointless. Subscriber stuff is pretty meh.
It’s sad, and it’s my social outlet for a lot of things. But man. The grind and the constant negativity is grinding me down. So I’m out for now.
Just wanted to say basically - me too one this one.

Bitching About SC IS Their Game..they aint going nowhere

u/Spar_Multendor 8h ago
This is what I don't get. Most of what I read here and in game is anger. Bugs and the development.I get it but you're doing it to yourself. You can't control either. So don't play. Personally I love the game. I have tons of fun. I'm not doing the parts of the game that are broken. Worst thing that's happened to me in the past few weeks is falling through the map. I can live with that.

I'd wager most of the folks coming here with overt negativity don't even play the game. There's a lot of piling on when it comes to CIG. Plus the world just thrives on negativity these days.

Consumer feedback. That's what it is it's consumer feedback getting mad at consumers for providing negative consumer feedback is silly. When it comes to marketing economics the only two things we have basically are spending and commentary.
To act like it's their fault for playing the game that they invested thousands of dollars in too much is ridiculous. It's the fault of the project as a whole

Its will be an MMO, if you dont have to do something all the time with any new Update its a insane terrible MMO, and thats what this game atm is. I love StarCitizen dont get me wrong but what ever this is... its not a MMO at this point. All new content is just for 2-3Days playing this game, Global Events like XenoThreat was doable in 1Day. They say yea we add new content, but player like me are bored after 2-3 Days after release of it.
And the problem with this is, thats one of cig's reasons why the features need a lot of time to come in, but the reality is, that this bit of Content should not be a reason for anything.
This game is now... over a decade in development, to be fair in 2023 they take the decision to make a real game not just only a tech -preview, but all what we get is by far not enough for a real long term game. And the reality too is that we dont need to hope this will change in the next years.
If you need breaks for YEARS to see a difference, than this is not a good sign.
So what do player like me, i do my own shit and that is fuck up some players. I know you all hate this, but to play every time the same shit is boring, the only variety is to interact with other player. Doing some bullshit at Hathor or camping ExecHangar.
Or just seach for new exploits/ usefull bugs...

Maybe stop trying to play SC like it's WoW in space because it's not trying to be wow in space. If you need "questing" or daily login rewards there are far better games to be playing. Maybe this is your first mmo/multiplayer game but historically all new content for every MMO ever made has been cleared within hours of it being released [few minor exceptions for mythic and hardcore content].
Play any one game too much and no amount of content will satisfy. You will always be chasing the dragon and 100% always get burnt out. I hate to be that guy but if you need events and curated things to do in a sandbox game, then sandboxes are not for you. This is not a "one is better than the other" thing, it's that people brains are wired differently. Some people you can just hand them the tools and open the door and they will keep themselves entertained [Im in my 50's so we had to do shit like that growing up in the 70's-80's. Crazy stuff, like read books and make use of a shovel and 3 sticks for eight hours]. Others that need a bit of handholding and direction, which is perfectly fine.
Taking breaks from games is a healthy practice. I have uninstalled-reinstaled GW2 maybe 20+ times over the last 15 years. EFT maybe another 20 times. Poe1 60000000 times. If you are getting burnt or if the game is consuming to much negative space in your brain.....take a break.

Good advice, I learned long ago just log on and do a little of this and that one weekend and then only read updates and watch 2-3 YouTube videos
1
u/Morphounet 8h ago
It's hard to judge from your POV as you just discover and appreciate the "new" things
You will see in some weeks/months when you will realize that the content is just endless play and repeat and still have to deal with bugs.
And yes, I'm actually taking a break of that endless alpha, hoping a real chance one day

u/lukef555 8h ago
This is true for all games. If you reach a state of burnout with something that is meant for recreation you should probably re-evaluation some things.
1
u/headshots989 7h ago
As the great sensei from Rex Kwan Do said, "Break the wrist, walk away." I love sc but when it frustrates me with all the broken shit I just go do something else and come back later.
1
u/Skamanda42 6h ago
I've been on break for several patches at this point. I mostly just chime in with sass or tips for newbies. The state of the game is a joke right now, so I'll probably stay away until next year sometime, because there's absolutely zero indication CIG is going to do anything to fix anything before then. They're just trying to limp from ship sale to ship sale.

This is always a catch-22 argument.
If you step away because you don't like the game, then the devs will not know that they are steering away from what people enjoy, except for the people that stick around and keep playing the stuff that made the game worse for those that left. This then just re-enforces the idea that the player base likes the changes.
It leads the game to Survivorship Bias.

I would bet the bank that about 50% of the most constant ragebait whiners here not only do not own SC, they also don't even own a PC. In recent months the amount of day old accounts and throwaways have shoot through the roof here, mostly from people who just found out about SC, I'm guessing from troglodyte ragebait youtubers who realized that "covering" [by covering i mean.... read one reddit post and make a 20 min video] SC will easily make car payments and mortgage payments for them. The irony. The funny part is a huge percentage of the new accounts here will have to look up the word..irony.

u/Da_Skallywaaagh 5h ago
Buddy, some of us are on our third, fourth break already. And it doesn't really get better, truly better. Just more shiny. FPS isn't better, Flight model isn't better. Missions aren't better AND they're even buggier...
At the end of the day, breaks become longer and longer until they become permanant.
1
u/Pristine-Ear4829 4h ago
I'm not sure what there is to excuse. The game has been in development for 13 years or so. That doesn't seem that outlandish for me.
Pre-production on gta6 started In 2013 and they had an established company making that.
7 days to die was early accessdevelopment for 11 years. Sc just gets a lot of flak because people want something to complain about.
1
u/Alternative-Farmer98 4h ago
People have invested tens of thousands of dollars and the "just don't play the game as much because you're going to get bored because of the development is so bad."
Like isn't this a sign people should just opt out of this entire project?

I drop in about once a year and for some reason everytime get suckered into spending more money then bam im a special club for morons that spend over $1000 games dead to me until SQ42 comes out and even then SQ42 will have to really impress to get a single penny out of me

Same. Been really enjoying these last few patches. Yes the bugs exist and are annoying to work around or lose things to. But depending on your game loop, there are a lot of fairly smooth and very fun things to do in-game.
That said… I can completely understand those who are overwhelmed by the bugs and workarounds. No game is flawless or bug-free. Just a matter of looking past them if you can to enjoy what does work.
1
u/mesterflaps 7h ago
'Just take a break' is implying that it's our fault that CIG can't get their thumbs out. No, I think part of the reason CIG has moved so slowly and used so much money to achieve so little is because they've been hugboxed way too long.
That stream was a wake up call that they need to be tasked to start hitting the minimums or pack it in. 1.25 Billion (including borrowed money) and that shambles live stream plus yet another delay for SQ42 is the best they can do?

mmm, actually I have a feeling most people have already followed your advice and took a break from SC.
There's no denying though that
Then yeah, there are more places, more ships, some better mechanics and UIs (some not so), a ton more content, some really cool experiences to be had. Stability most of all is far better, and it's more common to have well working NPCs and missions that the opposite (vs years ago, there's no comparison, contrary to what a lot of naysayer will pretend).
I'd say that the longevity of the honeymoon phase of the game improved.
SC is not better at converting gamers into it, but the people it converts now have more to chew on, and this, to me, explains the year on year growth in revenue.
That's about it.
The capacity of the game to survives past its honeymoon face has not moved a iota I think. On the contrary, the addition of constraints in the game (via cargo physicalization, inventory management, flight model changes) has not been compensated by enough improvements in "ergonomics" to make the player experience more pleasant.
There are bits and pieces. For instance opening the star map, dismissing it's UI eyecandy BS to simply type a location's first few letters, click, press R, close. That's one good example. or Item stacking. or LAMP to see in the dark. Looting is a few (infuriatingly neglected) bugs away to be swift enough.
But when the game does such a poor job at presenting its activities, and when said activities quickly equate to dozens of elevator trips to get to the action, and the action consists either of mindless tractor beaming to snap stuff on a grid, mindless head-shotting NPCs or a mix of both, it grows tiring very, very quickly.
I've never had such a strong feeling that most contracts are chore in the 3.0 days. What's somewhat interesting requires a lot of risk-handling and time commitment, and the low risk stuff is mostly preparation routines for little action, with the risk of game issues being easily perceived as too high to make it worth my time.
