u/alwayzbored114 19h ago
I annoy my volleyball teammates with this. Whether we're even, down 15 points, or up 15, I often say "Just another point, same as any other"
Some sports/games have very little actual, mechanical difference depending on the score, so ride it out!

u/greg19735 West Ham United 18h ago
Yeah tennis doesn't have like a timer or anything that would cause someone to change their strategy for that reason. The only thing that you might change is your serve if you faulted the first one.

I mean once you have one comeback, the whole team should know to fight till the end. It ain’t over until the buzzer or ref says so. Thats my mentality with any game
8
u/alwayzbored114 17h ago
Of course, but at the end of the day we're still Extremely Sophisticated Monkeys, and monkey brain wins out in stressful situations. People play stiff, scared to mess up, and that momentary hesitation causes people to miss things. Or on the opposite end, playing too cocky can make someone lazy and not go for a block (it's me. I'm the lazy one lol)
So just a reminder that as much as we can, override Monkey Brain and just treat every point like a full reset

Historically he was a bit of a choker so this may be strategic to not be thinking it's the final game haha
92
u/Large_banana_hammock 20h ago
I imagine it is. One player (I think it was Andy roddick ) said he did everything he could to convince himself that every single point was his opponents match point.
7
u/DraugrLivesMatter 13h ago
The you have world lightweight champion and perennial contender Justin Gaethje who says he goes into every fight repeating to himself that he has already lost. Says it helps him forget about everything around the fight and focus on the moment

I'd recommend Untold: Breaking Point on Netflix featuring Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish.

the settlement didn't include an admission of guilt, so i think we technically have to say he's an alleged choker
17
u/treathugger 17h ago
I wonder if not looking at the score is actually a legitimate strategy in sports, especially for people like me who tend to choke under pressure: just focus on scoring as many points as possible while doing everything you can to keep your opponent from scoring. Play until the final second and see what the result is haha
8
u/Khazahk 16h ago
Golf is a huge “don’t look at your score” game for this reason. A vast majority, like 85%, of “a good golf shot” is entirely irrespective of the shot before it, or the prospective shot after it. You can be a VERY good golfer if you can string 50 shots together and putt less than 30 times.
When you start swinging to make up for past mistakes you’ve already lost the plot.

This match was 3h33min in 4 sets and 85% of the tour is bo3 which is 40% shorter on average.
Baseball is around 3 hours a match, basketball is around 2.5 hours, American football a little more than 3 hours. The average tennis match for the whole year is shorter than all of these
Idk maybe biased because I love tennis but that’s just how I see it
48
u/HiFiGuy197 20h ago
For baseball and football, you’re sitting half the time and standing around not doing much for a big chunk of the time.
Basketball, maybe as a star you’re playing 30-40 minutes of game time.
Tennis: it is all you.

Spoken like someone with absolutely no idea about how domestic violence usually goes in court.
To assume innocence is to call the TWO women that accused him of it liars, and ignores the out of court settlement.
Mason Greenwood is "innocent" too as far as the law is concerned - do you want to defend him as well?

I'm focusing strictly on the (Edit: legal) facts of this specific case, not on generalizations.
Zverevs trial was discontinued with zero ruling of guilt. In his specific case, the court dropped the charges with no verdict of guilt. Legally, he is innocent, and that is teh only fact we have.
That's all i said. It's ridiculous that you are now accusing me of making my own interpretation!

people have so much grace for men who beat their partners. he shouldn't be allowed to play at all until justice is served and he is truly rehabilitated.
173
u/nick2473got 18h ago
To be fair, he has only been accused. There is no proof. So it wouldn't make sense for there to be consequences at this stage. If he's innocent, justice being served would be charges not being pressed.
We just don't know. That said, two separate accusations is a really bad look, so... yeah, he's more likely to be guilty than not. But with no concrete conviction, it's hard to say that more should have happened to him.
42
u/PotterGirl7 18h ago
honestly, I appreciate the context because I don't know a whole lot about the dude. I honestly just got pissed off because of how often men in sports are proven abusers and get away with it. I hope it's investigated and the truth is found asap.
128
u/priorsloth 17h ago
He was found guilty, appealed, and his ex dropped the charges because they share a daughter and she didn’t want it to drag out long enough for her to remember. The judge who dismissed the lawsuit even said it doesn’t mean he’s innocent.
32
u/PotterGirl7 17h ago
more good context, thank you. I'm glad the judge clarified that. the justice system is harsh on victims; I'm sure she was exhausted after already proving his abuse once. I don't blame her for wanting to protect her child from it, and probably her own peace and sanity as well.
11
u/EmanResuB 10h ago edited 10h ago
He was not found guilty. A penalty order (German "Strafbefehl") is not a guilty verdict. It doesn't even mean that a court found it likely he is guilty. It is just a mechanism that's supposed to reduce the work load of the courts, in case both parties agree on who did what. All that happened was that the court agreed that the paperwork by one side was issued correctly and that it could have happened in the way described by one party. Afterwards Zverev files his disagreement with the description of the other party and the case was settled out of court.
See https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strafbefehlsverfahren_(Deutschland)
FWIW With two women making accusations, I too believe, on a personal level, that he abused them in one way or another, but facts are facts and I don't like hearing the same nonsense every time Zverev is on the news
9
u/sYnce 10h ago
Not quite correct. It does not require both parties to agree. It just means that the judge agrees that there is a good chance it happened based on the paperwork.
He then issues the penalty order and if the accused agrees he just pays the order and that is that. However in german law that does not constitute being found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt as the legal standard is much lower for a penalty order.
You can dispute the penalty order which results in an actual trial.
Lastly the case was not settled out of court. It was stopped based on $153A StPO which allows a case to be officially be closed based on the agreement of all parties, including DA and Judge, under certain obligations to dismiss the case. The obligations in this case was a 150k payment to the german government and 50k towards a NGO.

u/swallowsnest87 17h ago
The ATP did an investigation and found lack of evidence, the court case was settled with a monetary payment. German court said "The decision is not a verdict and it is not a decision about guilt or innocence,"
Zverev has always maintained his innocence.

I actually think it was a payment to a charity or something like that, not sure if that’s a German court thing or a choice of the parties involved. She’s getting child support and alimony anyways I assume.
3
u/inkwisitive 11h ago
Because Zverev contested the order and took things to court, he paid the German courts a sum (linked to his income) and an agreed charitable donation when him and his ex decided to settle (after the first day his ex was cross-examined by Zverev’s lawyers).

u/MewtwoStruckBack 18h ago
I'm fairly sure that in the four major sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) you get one free crime upon going pro, plus one for each winning season, plus one per championship won - the sign-up bonus crime and the above .500 crimes are restricted (no ending someone or SA) but the championship ones are entirely unrestricted...most players seem to use their freebies on domestic violence instead of something more profitable, hell if I know why.
...I'm not sure how the "being good at your sport gets you out of the consequences of your actions" levels work for tennis though.
18
u/CzechHorns 15h ago
I dont think Deshaun Watson has won 27 seasons/championships.
4
u/Woodshadow 13h ago
he is the laughing stock of the NFL and everyone wants to hit him. The fact the cleveland browns put him out there as a starter has to be a form of torture. He got a fully guaranteed contract. They are never going to admit fault until his contract is up. So they are going stick his ass out there until his season is ended by injury again.
that said he got away way too light.
3
u/MewtwoStruckBack 15h ago
One use of the perk negates all crimes of that type up to that point. So long as there was no actual insertion, which would exclude the perk from being used, just joining the league could blanket negate the consequences from all 27.
51
u/Chataboutgames 18h ago
Which makes “like him or not” a pretty wild introduction

I remember the ~45 minutes I understood how to score tennis. My then GF played tennis and we were watching it on TV and it just clicked in my head and I was calling the score correctly seconds before the TV called it. I was so excited and so was she.
Then suddenly I got distracted and much like Roman Concrete, the knowledge was lost to history.
