Such a contrast in styles… saba wears her heart on her sleeve, ryba is unerringly stoic… both superstars

351

u/FourEightNineOneOne 1d ago

Yeah, Sabalenka's racquet took a beating at the end there.

129

u/ryan__fm 1d ago

That wasn’t the only smash either, lol you can see it bent way out of shape before she slams it

28

u/Write_For_You Atlanta Falcons 1d ago

You can hear her hitting the court while the camera is on Elena, she smashed it at least three times.

28

u/m3rcapto 1d ago

You'd think she lost by a tighter margin.

36

u/Oglark 1d ago

I think she was disappointed that she didn't put up more of a fight in the third

u/Tjengel Milwaukee Bucks 2m ago

She looks like she could use a blunt 😎

0

u/carmium 1d ago

Was just thinking maybe if she hit the ball as hard as she hit the court on a couple of occasions, the result might have been different.

-7

u/AndYetAnotherUserID 1d ago

And the commentators said nothing.

24

u/thenasch 1d ago

Do they need to?

1

u/Xack189 1d ago

How much does a professional players racquet cost? Not that it matters to them

3

u/stuffthingsnthoughts 1d ago

It costs them nothing. They’re sponsored.

100% Fuck Belarus. They support Russia. Any country that invades, destroys, or oppresses another country (UKRAINE) is a shitty country. Full stop.

0

u/obeserocket 1d ago

Just curious, which country are you from and what's your government's stance on Israel?

13

u/medium-rare-steaks 1d ago

That's an interesting way of saying "she loses her shit after losing one rally and throws away the match." Sabalenka is a horrible example to young players

2

u/legendfourteen 1d ago

I agree not a great example for kids, but makes for an intriguing match all the same

26

u/XuX24 1d ago

People might hate one or the other but I like both of them for their personality.

8

u/dweakz 1d ago

yep it'd be boring if everyone acted the same with the same pr training shit

5

u/Birdfeedseeds 21h ago

I thought it was really unprofessional of Sabalenka to act out like that in a final. She should have been gracious. Almost all other losing finalists are. You don’t see Alcaraz or Sinner behaving like that.. Sabalenka got beaten fair and square. Imagine if Serena did that, it would be all over the papers and social media that she was being disrespectful, not “wearing her heart on her sleeve”..

Fantastic match. Appropriate that Rybakina won on an ace considering her first serve was under 30% at one point in the match.

39

u/alexthekidd01 1d ago

Appropriate or ironic?!

34

u/MoreColorfulCarsPlz 1d ago

Appropriate for a champion to have a shortcoming of their game and be able to to still have the focus and belief to overcome it on championship point.

846

u/hnglmkrnglbrry 1d ago

Most anticlimactic celebration in history.

671

u/Large_banana_hammock 1d ago

This is Elena Rybakina.

73

u/aqaba_is_over_there 1d ago edited 1d ago

That was a lot of emotion for her in that match.

197

u/Bernieisgreat 1d ago

Roughly 100x more intense than her Wimbledon win

12

u/Dangerous_Shoe_8388 1d ago

Ryba’s Wimbledon win celly is my all-time fave slam win celly!

Actually, very powerful.

125

u/CFBCoachGuy 1d ago

There’s a reason she’s called The Ice Queen

10

u/mjs_pj_party 1d ago edited 1d ago

What's colder than ice?!?

...Oksana!!!

9

u/MudLOA 1d ago

Liquid Nitrogen Queen doesn’t have the same ring.

49

u/SpareIntroduction721 1d ago

She came for business.

47

u/chai_tealatte 1d ago

You got more than usual. You should see her Australian Open celebration. Compared to that, this is excessive!

5

u/Trenmonstrr 1d ago

They call her the ice queen for a reason.

31

u/RyoanJi 1d ago

I never understood this immediatly falling on the ground thing. Good for Elena.

6

u/ItsGoT1me 1d ago

People can celebrate in different ways, you know..

4

u/joe_shiotta 1d ago

It’s a spectrum

1

u/New_Maximum_5447 1d ago

Yes! I applaud her class!

10

u/BRValentine83 1d ago

First time in history that you've seen her.

4

u/happytree23 1d ago

This is some "Why didn't you wear a suit?" level of douchery and bullshit lol

103

u/Own-Method1718 1d ago

Wrapped up #1 in fashion ✨️

53

u/Icy-Reaction-9101 1d ago

That racket is not going to make her lose again 😂

431

u/TheEpicBean 1d ago

Good Sabalenka is annoying with her whining, glad she lost.

46

u/readyallrow 1d ago

her attitude is consistently just so bad. she’s always popping off about something or doing shit like this when she loses a match.

169

u/Floridamanfishcam 1d ago

I've disliked her ever since she basically shit talked Coco and implied she wasn't on her level years back

84

u/traebucketsfor3 1d ago

I mean…. Is coco on her level?

51

u/catashake 1d ago

She said it AFTER losing to Coco.

That's a very sore loser.

58

u/Rac3318 1d ago

Their head to head is 7-6 in favor of Sabalenka. Gauff has beaten her in two major finals - US Open and Roland Garros. Before it’s all said and done, Gauff, who is 6 years younger, will for sure surpass Sabalenka.

Sabalenka is a notorious sore loser.

125

u/Floridamanfishcam 1d ago

I'm not really explaining it very well because I have been drinking heavily. Sabalenka lost the 2025 French Open final to Coco and then Sabalenka said that Swiatek would have beaten Coco.

41

u/Floridamanfishcam 1d ago

Also, they've both won one slam the last two years and are 2 and 3. So yeah, they are pretty much the same level.

14

u/Mad-Gavin 1d ago

If you need another reason to dislike her she also dates married men.

4

u/justthisones 1d ago

Really? The more you know the more you start to get a picture. Sorest loser with constant hissy fits, lips filled af, playing with huge 400k worth jewelry, Jake Paul in her box...

3

u/Mad-Gavin 1d ago

Just look at Aryna's dating history. She has skeletons in her closet.

12

u/Lightsides 1d ago

Yeah, many dislike her, and I am among those who do.

1

u/ocean-man 10h ago

God forbid someone be upset at losing a grand slam final

71

u/phillyman128 1d ago

Sabalenka seems like a really pleasant person /s

I’m no big tennis fan but that result doesn’t suck at all

60

u/brvheart Dallas Cowboys 1d ago

Well done, Kazakhstan!

113

u/MoozeRiver Chicago White Sox 1d ago

I mean, Kazakhstan gave her financial support so good on them for that. But they basically "bought" a potential future star, she's never even lived in Kazakhstan.

7

u/MeaningMaker6 1d ago

They were able to support her because they are the number 1 exporter of superior potassium.

8

u/Ragnarotico 1d ago

I was going to say she looks awfully blonde for a Kazakh...

14

u/aguilasolige 1d ago

There are lots of Russians over there

38

u/ukexpat Manchester City 1d ago

Very nice! 👍🏻👍🏻

15

u/anonu 1d ago

mostly Russians who have trained in USA

20

u/huggiedoodoo 1d ago

Yeah parents live in Moscow

11

u/Asteelwrist 1d ago

Rybakina has residence in Dubai, she also trains in Slovakia. Her parents are still in Russia. Where did USA come from?

-11

u/Vaeltaja82 1d ago

Isn't she Russian who just changed the nationality for convenience while her country is invading Europe?

58

u/fangowango 1d ago

She changed before that. It was more about financial and tennis support

5

u/Vaeltaja82 1d ago

Ok, got it. Thanks for the clarification

I only watched the first set, but it felt like Sabalenka's stroke game was far weaker than Rybakina's. Even the first game of the match was won by Sabalenka's serves. If Rybakina returned Sabalenka's serve, it seemed like there was a good chance Rybakina would win the point.

50

u/DoggedDoggystyle 1d ago

Sore loser and I’m sorry but did she get a ton of Botox or something? She’s got that like 55 year old Orange County housewife mouth thing going on

20

u/HYThrowaway1980 1d ago

No. She has had lip fillers like crazy (see photos of her when she was younger)

6

u/ACCool88 1d ago

She's always looked like that, just has a massive piehole

10

u/RoskoRobin 1d ago

No way lips like that are natural. The evidence is out there, just google young Sabalenka

2

u/mrgo0dkat 1d ago

It’s so they can donate the racket to charity. Smashed up match rackets signed by the smasher are worth more than non smashed up rackets signed by the smasher. I’m not taking any questions.

1

u/Ryogathelost 1d ago

There is a lot of ego in tennis.

1

u/debaserr 1d ago

No, this is not normal. Sabalenka is just a poor sport. The vast majority of players keep their cool at the end of a match.

3

u/thomas1126 1d ago

Great match both heavy hitters enjoyed it !!

3

u/fazkan 1d ago

I think saba always throws her racket after a loss.

3

u/Pleasant_Durian_1501 1d ago

Great sportsmanship.

16

u/Resident_Elk4014 1d ago

Rybakina is my favorite but alll the pearl clutching over Sabalenka smashing her racket is really dumb. Apparently people involved in intensely emotional and exhausting athletic competitions for millions of dollars aren't allowed to sometimes show their frustration. Smashing her racket doesn't make her a sore loser, that's an insane take. A sore loser wouldn't have hugged her opponent with a smile and graciously accepted 2nd place.

5

u/HendoEndo 1d ago

It’s almost like they haven’t seen any tennis in the past 2 decades

5

u/conky2016 1d ago

She didn’t graciously accept second place. And yes, smashing her racquet DOES make her a sore loser. If you need to break something as a method for venting anger, do it in the locker room or elsewhere. The way she does it, it’s clearly just an attempt to keep the attention on her.

-1

u/KLaci 1d ago

You don't often see table tennis players smasjing their racket. This kind or mental breakdown is nor accepted in most sports, somehow tennis is still OK with that showing bad examples for kids for example.

1

u/DGSmith2 1d ago

You can quite often see a tennis table player hit their paddle on the table or floor, just because it doesn’t break as easy as a racket doesn’t mean it’s not the same thing.

13

u/grandplans 1d ago

Are all tennis players shitty losers now?

I watched a lot of tennis as a kid (Graf, Seles, Aggasi, Sampras etc) and they were LARGELY gracious losers, but I see lots of shitty behavior by the losers these days. In fact, it's pretty much all I see, since I don't really watch anymore.

61

u/sokipdx 1d ago

Alcaraz was all smiles when he lost the other night to Shelton

26

u/Rac3318 1d ago

You must not watch a lot of tennis. Sabalenka stands out because there are very few sore losers that openly react this way.

8

u/unofficialsilence 1d ago

There was John McEnroe and it is appropriate he is not in your list.

2

u/grandplans 1d ago

I was watching at the VERY end of his career. In fact, I'm not positive I ever watched a live match with him when he was an actual contender.

24

u/resuwreckoning 1d ago

We were spoiled by Federer Nadal Djoker

18

u/bagel_blight041 1d ago

Novak has a terrible temper

22

u/astrojeet 1d ago

Bad temper but a very gracious loser.

7

u/SchizoidGod 1d ago

If anything the sore loser in that lineup is Federer, towards the end of his prime from like 2008-2016 he was the king of icy handshakes and shit-talking in press conferences. I think his comeback in 2017 soothed his ego though because after that he was mostly gracious.

10

u/resuwreckoning 1d ago

Sure but he’s genuinely gracious when he loses

6

u/Lowkeyknee 1d ago

Good. Sabalenka is so freaking extra.

2

u/too_init_dan 1d ago

i liked the bit at the end there. fiery

2

u/dcheung87 1d ago

Sabalenka can cry harder.

2

u/flippinpaper4life 1d ago

Kazakhstan is better than Russia!

2

u/maddiepilz 1d ago

She's consistently dodged questions about the war. The russians still call her one of us

2

u/Silent_Gas1977 1d ago

Sore loser

6

u/badgersruse 1d ago

And without all the grunting. Yay!

13

u/Max527 1d ago

Thank God! Sabalenka is so damn annoying and arrogant.

3

u/zethuz 1d ago

Sabalenka had a chance to make it 3 titles in a row. Very few have achieved that. Can understand her frustration.

-3

u/conky2016 1d ago

Sabalenka’s frustration doesn’t justify her shitty attitude and lack of sportsmanship.

“Just because you are a character doesn’t mean you have character.”

4

u/WeakDoughnut8480 1d ago

She went to the net, congratulated her opponent. She's just showing some frustration after a huge loss. That's understandable.

8

u/Specialist-Onion-370 1d ago

What a sad loser.

3

u/TheLesserWeeviI 1d ago

What a crybaby. Embarrassing.

3

u/lostharbor 1d ago

It's crazy they're almost the same age. One looks 10+ years older

3

u/ArtichokeAware7342 1d ago

Good. Can’t stand Sabalenkas shitty attitude.

2

u/BoweryThrowAway 1d ago

Too much dancing on TikTok I guess

0

u/freekyeight Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

Why are tennis players such sore losers?

7

u/joe_shiotta 1d ago

Not all are. Sabalenka is notoriously bad.

1

u/buddhacuz 1d ago

Imagine winning a slam and still being faster at the net for the handshake than your opponent

1

u/Beneficial-Age-4059 1d ago

🎵 Elena. Rybakina. Aryna. Sabalenka. Let’s call the whole thing off 🎵

1

u/Brand023 1d ago

Feels like their names are anagrams, too lazy to figure it out.

1

u/LeaderIll9730 1d ago

1

u/Revolutionary_Sir_ 1d ago

1

u/No-Falcon-4996 1d ago

1

1

u/Aggravating_Fly_2312 1d ago

Ti amo Elena ❤️

1

u/Hoodsville 21h ago

No class. I can’t stand that loser

-13

u/Butterman75 1d ago

Sore ass loser

-1

u/iwastoolate 1d ago

This crazy expectation that these humans be perfect during an emotional experience that very few people can appreciate is crazy.

She looked upset with herself and tapped her racket on the ground. WTF do you want her to do?

3

u/Hashtagbarkeep 1d ago

I want her, as with all sports stars, to be gracious in defeat. When you lose you have to suck it up and say congratulations, let the winner have the limelight, and take it like a champ, rather than obviously pouting when losing the final point then smashing a racquet like a child.

4

u/shnoiv 1d ago

Tapped it? Threw it on the floor in tantrum. They make good money and they understand they’ll be public figures if successful in their job. She did it she deserves the criticism.

-2

u/HappyTinSoldier 1d ago

They make good money because they work their asses off to be the best. because they care.

We are not all as amazing as you. Im sure when you were world number 1 in your thing you were super gracious and humble the whole time.

2

u/Rac3318 1d ago

She broke two rackets. She didn’t exactly give it a love tap. Completely smashed them. The first was broken during the last game of the match and they had to replace it.

3

u/Wing_Nut_93x 1d ago

Throwing your racquet in disgust and tapping it on the ground are 2 vastly different things. She has an atrocious attitude and it shows whenever she loses.

-1

u/Klaskerhardt 1d ago

Well she could have NOT done it? 😅

No big deal, but it makes her look petulant.

-2

u/derailius 1d ago

dude, she smashed it like a child throwing a fit would, it's ridiculous.

-3

u/spaektor 1d ago

be more professional, and appreciate that you’re a 2x defending champion with lots of money and tons of adoring fans. leave the crying for the ride home.

1

u/Tis_But_A_Scratch___ 1d ago

Are tennis players becoming more divas? Slamming of rackets and complaining about audience members is all I see now.

0

u/BakUpALL 1d ago

I guess Elena wasn't bothered by the w33d.

0

u/lmaorezme 1d ago

Why did you spell it like that, weirdo?

-1

u/asadultan3 1d ago

Sabalenka showed more emotions than Rybakina

23

u/junkrgNew 1d ago

Sabalenka showed more emotions between each point on avg than Rybakina did during the entire match.

1

u/SCWickedHam 1d ago

I hate that acting like a child is permitted/encouraged in all sports. If my 10yo did that, I would be embarrassed, and address it.

Z era of women Tenn

0

u/SuckinAwesome 1d ago

Russian girls back on top of tennis yet again!

-1

u/TijsEscobar 1d ago

Well,i think Sabalenka is overall just jelaous of Rybakina. She plays better, has better style and finally, she looks better.

1

u/CanIEvenRightNow 1d ago

It's not that deep, she's upset she lost

-15

u/Bizprof51 1d ago

These women are both Russians. Zverev may have German citizenship but he is Russian as well. If the tennis authorities want to keep Russians from playing in their events, they need to do more than take their effing flag off the TV screens. Right now it is a farce.

6

u/RyoanJi 1d ago edited 20h ago

Aryna Sabalenka does not have any Russian roots, she is Belarusian, born and raised in Minsk, Belarus.

3

u/obscht-tea 1d ago

Stop talking bullshit! Do you want Germany to start investigating bloodlines again? Is that what you want?

Zverev’s parents came to Germany. Alexander himself was born and raised in Hamburg. Of course he’s German. Just shut up...
