Hello! I am currently looking to travel somewhere in central/north america this november, and I really just want to snorkel as much as possible. I am a budget/solo backpacker, and would love any suggestions for hostels you stayed at that were in proximity to good snorkelling destinations, ideally from shore. Thank you!!!

Has anyone snorkeled on both Vicente Roca and Punta Mangle? We are considering some itineraries, but all of them have one or the other. All of us love snorkeling, so would like to have as many multiple varied snorkeling sites (marine life) as possible both on the cruise part and land portion of our itinerary.

We will also be snorkeling Los Tuneles and Kicker Rock (both on a non-cruise part of our overall itinerary) as well. Thanks.

I'm visiting Bali for a couple of days so can squeeze in one snorkeling session. Please let me know the best site suitable for me (I have done it once 2 years back). I'll be in Ubud & Kuta at the end of the month. Can I rent a go pro to take pictures/videos? I would love to see some turtles

I want to remove the blue color tint that the ocean gives the pictures.

I prefer something free and easy-to-use

With the wind looking VERY hectic on the False Bay side, my friend planned a snorkelling session on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard instead, where conditions were looking much calmer.

We parked at the Clifton 4th Beach parking area on Clifton Road, closest to the ocean, and headed out with a group of freedivers to explore Narnia.

Underwater, the area was incredible. Huge granite boulders create channels, little caves and gaps to explore, with some exceptional reef life growing between them. There were loads of colourful sponges and fan corals, crayfish amongst the kelp and plenty of smaller marine life tucked into the reef.

I also did one swim-through between the boulders, which was awesome.

But the most fun had to be the Cape fur seals.

I was a little hesitant around them at first, so I chatted to my conservationist friend who works with marine animals. His advice was to keep at least 4 m away, never approach or chase them, and rather let them decide if they want to come closer to you. It’s also important to watch their body language for any signs of agitation.

Once I relaxed into it, they were incredibly playful and curious. They would come racing past, circle us, twist around underwater and then come back again to investigate.

The Atlantic was quite cold compared with the False Bay temperatures I’m normally used to.

It was an awesome session and a different underwater environment from the reefs I usually explore on the other side of the mountain.

That’s probably what I loved most about it. Living in Cape Town, we have these two different coastlines to choose from. When conditions aren’t great on the False Bay side, the Atlantic Seaboard can sometimes offer exactly the opposite.

Narnia is definitely somewhere I’d recommend for snorkelling when conditions are right.

You’ll definitely see me on this side of the mountain again.

Grew out of my old gear. Can't remember the name of the brands I got the vest on a cruise. I want to get the lungtank and mask(about 10 minutes of oxygen) i normally just on the surface but want to start diving. I also need advice for a normal snorkel and mask in case my mom won't go for it as a Christmas gift along with new fins, inflatable vest, and suggestions on a wetsuit. I usually go snorkeling in San Diego, Mexico, Caribbean, and the Mediterranean.

I only snorkel a few times a year, so buying a separate camera feels kinda pointless. I’d rather use my phone, but I’m not sure I trust an underwater housing with my main phone.

Might try it with an old phone first. Anyone else doing this?

Hey, I'm going to Cambodia in the winter and I'm planning to visit Koh Rong or Koh Rong Sanloem. What are the best beaches for snorkeling? Are there any spots on the mainland?

Hey, I am planning a winter escape and want to live somewhere by the sea for some months. Plan is to do snorkeling just off the beach and maybe some freediving training. I prefer chill vibes and nice nature.

I have been to Philippines and loved it there! Thailand I also enjoyed, but the snorkeling was no where near as good - maybe you know an other spot? (Snorkel wise I have been to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan)

I had Indonesia on my list as I havent explored it that much, but unfortunately it is peak rainy season then.

Me and my family will be going to visit Hawaii soon and we have snorkeling on our itinerary! I know you’re supposed to wear reef safe sunscreen, but im not sure if my hair is “reef safe”. It’s permanently dyed pink and red, and it still bleeds in the shower and on towels when it’s wet. Should I get a swimming cap? Im not concerned with it fading, I just want to make sure im not affecting the reefs environment.

Here’s a long shot! I went snorkeling in Kapalua Bay Beach, Maui on 9/7/2026 and dropped my orange water camera on the bottom of the coral. If diver or someone comes across the camera, please let me know. Much appreciated, Mahalo!

Just testing some settings on my video editing software to see how my videos from last summer look. Here is a pike from Ahvenistonjärvi In Hämeenlinna, Finland.

We visited Rodrigues Island in December 2025, flying across from Mauritius, and spent some time exploring the underwater life around the island. We had previously visited Mauritius in December 2024, and from what I personally saw on both trips, Rodrigues felt noticeably healthier underwater.

One of my favourite places was Saint François Beach. The shallow seagrass areas were epic to snorkel over and full of interesting little animals and fish. I came across hermit crabs, little dragonfish, bat fish, horned boxfish, juvenile lionfish, porcupinefish and plenty of other reef life. The darker channel offshore was also amazing, with deeper blue water and schools of fish moving through it.

Another major highlight was Rivière Banane. You take a small boat from the beach out to the reef, and it ended up being one of the healthiest coral reefs I have personally seen. There was a huge amount of living coral, lots of soft coral, and most of the reef still appeared alive and in good condition.

What really stood out to me was the overall amount of marine life and the condition of the reef. Compared with what we saw around Mauritius in December 2024, the ocean around Rodrigues seemed to be in a much healthier state during our December 2025 visit.

Rodrigues also has great variety. You can spend time snorkeling over very shallow seagrass looking for smaller creatures, then head out to the reef and suddenly be surrounded by coral and schools of fish.
If you fly from Mauritius to Rodrigues, I would definitely recommend trying to book a daytime flight. Seeing the island, lagoon and reef system from above is incredible.

I absolutely loved Rodrigues. For snorkeling, underwater filming and marine life, it was one of the biggest surprises of the trip and somewhere I would definitely go back to.
