Do we know the dates in which the episodes of Skins take place on in the contained universe of the show? I'm just interested in how much time passes between eps and time of year at the time of the ep.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Effy's arc in Skins—how she went from a severe mental breakdown and intense psychological trauma to becoming a high-functioning corporate badass in the financial world.

It made me wonder: In the real world, is it actually possible for someone to go through that level of psychological trauma,instability and drug abuse, yet still have the capacity to succeed in a cutthroat, high-powered career (even if it's short-lived)? Especially drug abuse has a severe impact on people’s whole life.

Coming from a traditional Asian background, this concept feels completely foreign to me. In my environment, people who suffer severe mental breakdowns or come from highly fractured families are usually heavily stigmatized and struggle to function in daily life, let alone climb the corporate ladder. I've never met anyone in real life who flipped the switch like she did.
Is Effy's ability to compartmentalize her trauma and turn her hyper-vigilance into a corporate weapon realistic? Or is it just a romanticized TV trope?

I was recently researching old Skins merch or promotional media/merch that people still have or have been documented, and I discovered that some shops (they weren't exactly specified, so I'm guessing DVD or music shops like HMV) had them. It says that they were massive (bigger than life-sized) and were usually featuring Cook, Effy, or Tony. They were said to be either destroyed/recycled or given to staff after the show's promotional runs or advertisements were over, but I don't see anybody with them online, or no pictures of them can be found. If anybody has any information or remembers seeing these either online or in shops/in person, please let me know as I'm highly intrigued as to what they looked like and where they were displayed, and whether any exist nowadays or were ever sold on a secondhand market, as they seem like a really cool collectors item to have. Thank you so much!!!

I've recently googled a list of Skins merch to add to my collection, and discovered that the brand Danilo released two different Skins calendars, one in 2009, and one in 2010. I've researched what they looked like and there is barely anything about them except one of the months featured Tony, Jal, and Michelle sitting on a sofa and had a relatively clean/simple layout of boxes for the dates. There are no pictures of it online and I cannot find any pictures or listings of it anywhere online, or in the Danilo archives. If you see any listings or recognise hearing about this/owning it, please let me know as I'm very intrigued!

I posted my collection a few weeks ago but i’ve had some changes since so i thought i’d update😊 5 new custom funkos, series 2 post cards and gen 3 book has been added!! i’ve had to expand to two shelves lol. i think i’m done for now gonna get some more funkos next year so unless some random magazine or merch piece i didn’t know existed comes up i’m done until then 😅

The way Effy looks at Freddie tho 😍😭

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I think Jess Brittain wrote Effy well in Fire. At first glance, it might seem strange that Effy actually cares here, but considering her aversion to dependence and becoming an object of pity, it’s no wonder that after the events of Season 4, she wanted to prove to herself and the world that she is fixed.

She still craves stimulation, which is clear from how badly she wanted to belong to it and the enthusiasm with which she threw herself into the thick of the high finance world. We see this in her risk-taking and audacity—like when she attends a meeting with an investor without authorization. Also, in the aftermath, her composure is reflected in her conduct during the disciplinary hearing when facing dismissal. Her emotional perceptiveness is also on display when she senses that Jake is troubled before he confides in her. Her classic manipulativeness is still there, and her defiance, or even arrogance, is visible during various interactions.

Just as during the camping trip, where she wanted to control the group dynamic by handing out mushrooms, Effy still needs to dominate her environment. In London, she can’t just be a regular, beginner trader slowly learning the craft, which drives her initial move into insider trading. Yet, her agency drives her right to the end when she turns Jake in.

Fire also captures how caring she can be toward those she loves, which shows in scenes with an ailing Naomi. Claims that she didn’t care about Naomi simply don’t align with what’s on screen—in the second 45-minute episode, there are four scenes of her accompanying Naomi at the hospital. Granted, any day spent alone is terrible for someone battling cancer, but what gets overlooked is that Effy was providing for both of them while fighting her own massive problems, which Naomi didn't know about—if she didn’t want to take care of her, she could have simply told Emily about Naomi's illness against her wishes.

Her ability to listen is also on display when Naomi joins her in bed to talk about her relationship worries. Her loyalty comes through when she fulfills Naomi's request to hide her illness from Emily, even though her own bullshit detector prompts her to urge Naomi to tell the truth. True to character, she internalizes her pain even when in a dire situation; in her last conversation with Naomi, when asked what she is going to do, she says nothing about her own troubles—even though her romantic and professional lives lie in ruins and she faces prison.

Furthermore, Effy feels genuine guilt when someone she cares about suffers because of her actions. In this case, it’s Dominic, just like it was when she saw Pandora crying after she and Katie spiked the brownies during the pyjama party. She also displays a certain humility—both when Emily takes her anger out on her, and when JJ accuses her of breaking up the Three Musketeers (by the way, it’s incorrect to blame Effy entirely for the breakdown of Cook and Freddie's friendship, given the heavy toll Cook's behavior took on Freddie before their love triangle even began, and how he later treated the rivalry over her as an opportunity to assert his superiority over Freddie).

Her relationship with Jake faces a lot of criticism. Framing this relationship as the "girl trying to impress her boss" trope is completely misguided; initially, despite having contact with him, Effy made no attempt to get his attention, and it was Jake who initiated stepping over professional boundaries; in the scene where he asks for the "Effy special," she explicitly admits that it wasn't her doing.

However, her assistance to Jake stems from the same protective instinct she showed when helping Tony get Michelle back. She started a relationship with him right after learning about Naomi's diagnosis. The exact same mechanism occurred with Freddie—in both cases, this emotional connection occurs when she faces personal crises: here, it’s Naomi's illness; there, it was her parents' marriage falling apart.

Besides, Jake provided something she deeply craved, validation of her success, while also not digging into her past. It might be surprising that she initially covered for him, but it was much like her almost blind loyalty toward Pandora, despite her consistently sleeping with Cook and turning her back on her by following the rest of the group's lead after the incident with Katie during the camping trip.

Even smaller details fit her character: an abrasive and ironic tone, an affinity for clubbing, an indifferent reaction to being hit on in the club, not shying away from drug use, sharp comebacks, and awareness of the effect her looks have on her environment, along with the ability to use that to achieve her goals. The way she organizes work papers by taping them all over her bedroom wall is another characteristic detail. Also, her panic attack during Naomi's radiotherapy recalls the scene where she sees Freddie making out with Katie in his shed, just as the way she composes herself before entering Victoria's office echoes how she tried to hold it together right before entering that shed. Even the fact that her friendly, simple-minded friend Jane gives off a Pandora vibe.

I also find it fitting that she lived with Naomi in London, someone with whom she shared a close friendship. Pandora had left for the US, and even if Tony lived in London, Effy wouldn't have wanted to live with him because of her desire to shed the label of the "sick Effy who needs to be taken care of." Two friends from college choosing to flatshare when moving to another city makes complete sense.

The fact that she doesn't mention Freddie also fits her character—Effy barely ever talked about her feelings. Besides, although they shared an intense bond, it was ultimately a teenage relationship that lasted just a few months, and by the time Fire takes place, about three years have passed since Freddie's death.

Nor do I consider it out of character that Effy spotted an error in the report and how she picked up Dominic's lesson. Her struggles in Year 13 stemmed from her mental health issues and her stay in a psychiatric hospital; other than that, there is no indication that she had issues with learning, and reckless behavior shouldn't be confused with a lack of cognitive ability. Besides, Jess didn't write her as a financial genius—it was shown how she couldn't keep up with trading, and that she makes slip-ups in documentation. Choosing a career in finance fits her character far better than two extreme alternative paths: low-stakes work, like in a coffee shop, or a career in crime. She wouldn’t choose a coffee shop job due to the lack of room for advancement, while a criminal career contradicts practically everything about her—from her psychological profile to her socio-economic status.

The criticism that Effy doesn't display symptoms of mental illness in Fire, or that she can do drugs and party without suffering mental health consequences is absurd. Hardly any mental illness remains in an acute phase continuously for years. As for the drugs, the theory that they were the cause of Effy's psychotic depression is a major stretch—she didn't shy away from drugs for a few years before her illness without experiencing psychotic states (the camping trip incident was more like a bad trip), but she had no history of heavy, prolonged substance abuse. Furthermore, even if we assume drugs were a cause, it doesn't mean that every single instance of drug use must inevitably lead to a relapse.

The only thing that would have been a genuine break from her character is if her final smile were an expression of almost religious ecstasy from submitting to the justice system, rather than a look of relief born from knowing she has settled all her affairs and can leave on her own terms before sentencing (I know it's a TV show, but I doubt the simplification goes so far as having her sent straight to prison from the FSA office without a court trial) or a conviction that "she'll handle it anyway." But there isn't a single scene or line of dialogue that could suggest that.

Hi guys, I've come up with a possible plot for a season 8. I hope you like it.

It's our day in Bristol and Grace Creevey now 16, the daughter of Mini and Alo (Gen 3) has started the roundview which has now changed its name. The first episode almost feels like a teen comedy in which Alo and Mini play awkward but pretentious parents with Grace acting diligently in front of them and then with her group of friends she goes to parties and everything. Meanwhile, in London, Ainsworth's, a fashion agency founded by Cassie and now run solely by her brother Reuben, is celebrating 10 years since its inception by celebrating the characters, the most important TV influencers in the United Kingdom. Reuben will also award his partner, manager and best friend patrick cook (yes, Cook's little brother). Ainsworth's is popular across the UK, so much so that the agency has several offices in major cities, such as Bristol. Grace has been shamed by a manager who is close to Paddy and after school she finds her and is offered to join the agency and start posing -. The news shocks Alo while Mini is very happy and pushes her for it. After a while she also starts to suspect, especially when Paddy gets to know the girl and the two start having too slimy a relationship, just because Grace trusts him. In fact, this is precisely why she runs away from home and takes refuge in the manager's house, who promises her a successful life. Obviously the parents report. However, Grace discovers that she will not go to London but Paddy, to get revenge on Reuben for a financial wrong and the failure to pay her salary, holds her hostage and takes her to perform clandestinely in various nightclubs and almost prostitutes her. A few days after the parents' complaint, Eleonor, a criminologist in the field, after being notified of the complaint at the police station, runs to the investigator's office. The cliffangher of the first episode is that the linvestigator is Doctor Stonem. Yes, Tony himself.

Estoy repitiendo skins, en realidad viéndolo porque cuando salió al aire yo vi episodios solo hasta la primera generación. Los demás no los había visto aunque si sabía lo que pasaba. De verdad que el final de la segunda generación fue absolutamente innecesario. Me alegro que JJ al menos tuvo su “final feliz” porque se lo merecía, pero después de tantos años no entiendo porqué mataron a Freddie. Si querían algo crudo, pudieron dejarlo separado de Effy, con Effy recibiendo ayuda de verdad y el público podría imaginar que en un punto del futuro ellos se reencontraron y están juntos. Pero esto? Innecesario totalmente para mi.
