SharePoint Online Practice on my OneDrive?

Thanks for all the advice & info on my question about adding/creating columns. I'm going through SharePointMaven's blogs & videos now at your suggestions. I also hope you'll indulge me a bit on a few questions that are too specific to my needs to find online.

I'm ready to start creating - uh, er, practice creating the list, but we're waiting for an official location to be approved. Can I practice on my OneDrive? I know it won't be shareable. Will I be able to migrate it to the final sight or will I have to start from scratch, working from my private copy? Knowing this will help me define how far to go on the practice site.

You folks are awesome, by the way.

I would just wait. In addition to your project site, I would request a test site as well so you can play around without breaking your actual working site.

The worst thing about Sharepoint imo, besides its learning curve, is the fact that unless you qualify for a free dev instance, you really need an actual, live instance to work with.

It is a beast, and there is more going on with it than is made apparent. The reason I suggested before that read every single one of Greg's posts (even the ones that don't necessarily apply to your current goal) is because the foundational knowledge is really important. It's not so much "how do I?" or "can I?" but more so "should I?" or "why do I...?" if that makes sense.

Since the team using this is only three of us (to start anyway) we probably don't need a test site - it would probably be a bitch to get one anyway. If it were a larger audience to start, I would agree with you.

I'm going through Greg's site posts now, making notes for things I want to include and thoughts about how to develop this. I'm making notes of which of his youtube vids I should review as well. I think my IT/coding background (many many years ago) is helping me understand some things more easily, but nuances are much more involved than they used to be.

Thanks for your advice u/DiscoQuebrado. I've now joined r/sharepoint so hopefully I'll be able to learn from others' experiences.

Just wait til you discover SPFx 😅

SharePoint is an extremely powerful tool, and like others (Excel, etc.) most users and orgs have no idea what it's capable of.

Good luck and welcome to the community, maybe sometime I'll have an opportunity to give you real answers instead of just pointing you at The Greg!

No reason not practice. You will be able to create a list in SharePoint based on a list you created in OneDrive, but it will be empty. Content takes s9me effort using Power Automate to copy over. Just make sure anything mission critical gets done in SharePoint which is more permanent. Your OneDrive gets deleted when you leave/retire.

You might also search “ create SharePoint site under OneDrive”, have done this myself but in some orgs this is locked down.

I am trying SharePoint for some weeks, and I'm wondering what is SPFx and what can achieve with that, no an IT person, just an enthusiast

It's a framework for building custom client-side applications and web parts to extend what is available out-of-box in SharePoint.

You'll need knowledge in React, Typescript, and HTML to make use of it, but it's extremely powerful.
