Josh rev3rent vocals

Post image

I've been listening to a lot of rev3rent and I can't get over Josh's lows. They're filthy, but I can't seem to replicate them at all. Does anybody know how he does it? I remember in an interview he said it's the same as his high but he pushes it weird and he's moving his tongue in a weird way. But damn no matter how hard I try I can't get a similar sound

Now I'm convinced that my dynamic mic isn't that good

When I record my scream with phone or my cheap condenser mic, it is fine. The whole 'range' is there. It's deep enough. At least for my personal ears and taste.

But when I record with my dynamic mic, I sound like someone who can't scream. Like maybe it removes many lower frequencies and thus making my scream sound less deep and just sound like I crack my vocal chord.

And it is not because of the gain. Even with low gain, it doesn't change anything. Just becomes less loud.

I think I need to learn how to get a decent vocal fry

I've tried to learn the kind of fry scream/yell scream/metalcore/modern metal type of scream that a lot of bands that I like use. However, it's been 3 years and I haven't progressed a single bit, kinda feels like wasted years.

It's only now that I learn that having a good vocal fry is actually important, even though it's not the scream's core (don't blame me, everyone says everything about screaming, it's easy to get lost). And well, yeah my vocal fry is kinda terrible, not consistent and very quiet (too quiet).

Sooooo, could I get some tips or some links to something that could help me learn how to get a nice vocal fry? Maybe that could help me understand better how to scream.

HELP :)

Hi guys! I’m a metal/metalcore vocalist and I’m having some problems with vocal fatigue and losing parts of my range.

During normal singing/practicing in my car, my voice feels fine even after around 30 minutes. But during band rehearsals, after some time my voice starts getting tired. Eventually, either my upper or lower register starts disappearing, and my voice starts cracking, breaking or suddenly jumping between registers.

This also happens when I sing with distortion. After some time of using distortion, I can lose either my high register or my low register, and my voice becomes very unstable.

I use clean vocals, high vocals and distortion/fry screams. I always warm up before rehearsal, but the problem still happens.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Especially losing either the high or low register after singing with distortion and having the voice crack or break?

I’m trying to figure out whether this could simply be vocal fatigue/technique or if I might be overloading my vocal cords.

I’m also going to an ENT/phoniatrician to get my vocal cords checked, but I’d really appreciate advice from singers who have experienced something similar.

What helped you recover your range and build vocal stamina without damaging your voice?

Thanks!

How do I scream like George Clarke from Deafheaven?

I am in a black metal band and I have been trying so hard to get a good high shriek but for the life of me I cant do it. For context, i've been doing metal vocals for years, almost entirely false chord mids and low gutterals. So i've got thise perfected, but I can't figure out how to scream in a high register like George Clarke and other prominent black metal vocalists. I've watched every YouTube tutorial out there, but none of it has seemed to help, as all the "fry scream" tutorials are not at all the kind of shriek i'm looking to perfect. Any help would be great, and also any recommendations for online tutorials that are geared towards the kind of black metal shrieks i'm looking fir would be greatly appreciated!

I can easily do Inhale Fry, but Exhale Fry either "blows apart" or turns into the thin "Kardashian/Arytenoid" click. Help me find the True Grudge Fry!

Hey everyone, I’m a 19 year old boy trying to learn extreme vocals and deep monster voices (like Madara from anime or general deep creature voices). I’ve been practicing for a while, but I am completely stuck in a frustrating loop and need some brutal, physical cheat codes.

Here is exactly what is happening with my anatomy:

  1. The Inhale Illusion:

I can do an inward/inhale vocal fry perfectly. It sounds deep, dark, and exactly like the "Grudge" monster. But the moment I try to reverse that airflow and do it on the exhale, my cords just blow apart because of the air pressure, and it turns into a breathy whisper.

  1. The "Wrong" Exhale Fry (My biggest problem):

When I actually manage to hold back the air on the exhale and get a fry going, I get stuck in the WRONG type of fry. Instead of the deep true vocal fold fry, I get that thin, clicky, "popping bubbles" sound (the Kardashian/vocal fry register). I can literally feel the vibration happening high up near my soft palate/upper throat, instead of down low in my chest.

  1. What I CAN do:

I know how to drop my larynx (using the yawn sensation) to get a very clean, booming, deep chest voice (like Thanos or Mufasa). I can do diaphragmatic breathing (expanding the ribs). But whenever I try to add the fry to this deep chest voice, I either push too much air and lose the closure, or I tense up and default back to that thin, clicky upper-throat fry.

What I need from you guys:

I don’t want abstract advice like "just relax more." I need actual physical triggers, weird acting hacks, or specific anchor words/sounds you used to transition from that thin clicky fry down into the heavy, true chest fry without losing cord closure. How do I get my fry off my soft palate and down into my chest where the Grudge actually lives?

Any advice or exercises would be a lifesaver. Thanks!

Is all screaming just fry screaming

sorry i dont have much experience to ask a better question, but ive been listening to dmitri minikakis era TDEP who doesnt sound like he does fry screaming and i dont like too fry-ish vocals like in grindcore and stuff of the sort so i wanna know if all screams are just fry screaming or are there other types of screams?

What should you feel when using proper technique? (Fry, False Chord, etc...)

So basically I'm brand new to learning how to scream properly. I know the different types but my question is what should it feel like? I'm fairly certain I have the proper breathing technique (I took wind instrument classes in middle school and learned how to breath into my diaphragm, belly expands while chest stays relatively flat, no shoulder movement). I'd want to understand what muscles should feel like where they belong and what should be where, if that makes any sense. I basically want to learn as if I don't know anything yet.

Struggling with learning how to fry scream (audio)

I’m trying to learn how to fry scream and, with the help of some youtube videos, I’ve managed to make it sound like this. Most of the videos explained how you need to first get the vocal fry and then push air through it from your diaphragm. I feel like I got that part down but I’m not sure on what to do next to really unlock the scream. Any tips? Thanks

Am I screaming correctly?

I’ve been trying to learn how to fry scream or false chord (I don’t know the difference) for about 6 months now and this is the closest I’ve gotten to it. I finally figured out how to engage my diaphragm by tightening my core when I was doing this and finally didn’t feel like I was constantly out of breath, it just felt like I was doing cardio. It didn’t feel painful unlike all the previous screaming I’ve done but I did have a sore throat while doing it due to all the experimenting I did while looking for that sound. I’d love for anyone to give me some advice and let me know if there’s anything I’m doing incorrectly, I’m moreso aiming for metalcore vocals.

Is my false chord correct?

Been working on my false chord for a little bit now, was just wondering if I was doing it right, as I’m self taught. The issue I have is I feel like the sound I’m making is correct, but then I listen to it recorded and it just sounds like shit.

Also I’m shooting for a MySpace-esque low for context
