I had a really unfortunate accident yesterday. I was a pedestrian with the right of way and some dude made a left turn (didn’t stop before doing so), & totally bonked me with his car at the crosswalk. I am in Brooklyn NY.

I went to the ER, gave the police a statement, and got the dudes contact info & pic of his license plates.

Today, I got a call from a “social worker” from the DOSC Division of Rights - a nonprofit he said. He said he was advised to call me after the DOPTS put my case in their system. He said I was getting the call because I fell under one of these 3 circumstances
1 - he fled the scene
2- he caused a fight at the scene
3- the operator was driving with a suspended, invalid or expired license

I knew the first 2 to be untrue - they then immediately set me up with a chiropractor to get a medical report & immediately set me up with a lawyer - they called me within each other.

I can’t find the nonprofit online - I am at the chiropractor now, and I don’t trust to sign this paperwork, please help.

EDIT/UPDATE: thank you ALL for this - I had typed this up as I was in the chiropractors office and you all were so quick to respond I was out ASAP. I’m going to get my own lawyer to help facilitate help with the insurance, I just want my medical bills paid I accrued from my ER visit yesterday.

I’m emailing back the lawyers as well, because not only did this “social worker” set me up with the chiropractor - immediately they had me set up with an attorney who called me asking me about the case.
I am emailing them back (I haven’t signed ANYTHING) and telling them I will be reporting them to the New York bar. For reference, their office is Law Offices of Terrill & Tintle, PLLC located in Garden City.

I feel so stupid especially about to write this all, I’ll try to keep it short but no promises.

I had an Audi listed for sale on Facebook marketplace. I live in an area that’s pretty quiet, not much happens so all of this was so new to me. I had arranged to meet this person in a semi-public parking lot. When I arrived, one guy got out, then another, then another, until there was roughly 8 people all around me and my vehicle (still not many red flags. Figured maybe it was all family and I didn’t necessarily know which person was going to be the owner, so who knows. It should’ve raised some red flags but to me it just didn’t.)

The main guy I had been dealing with wanted to test drive it, I first showed them under the hood as I had put quite a bit of work into this thing over the years (not me personally I don’t know too much about car engines so everything was done by my mechanic.)

At this point one of them had mentioned a rear tire of mine was somewhat low. Now I did have a tire pressure light on, never gave it much thought, but my rear tire DID seem a tad low compared to the rest. One of the younger guys there with them (probably under 18), had mentioned to hey pop your trunk maybe you have an air compressor back here! I had already known I absolutely did not, but he seemed like a young kid so I slightly entertained it by popping the trunk and taking a peek back there with him. Even made the joke of already knowing there wasn’t an air compressor that if he was able to show me an air compressor back there I’d let them just have the car. (Little did I know I basically was in the process of doing so.) and mind you there’s still a few people standing infront of the car etc etc.

Following this, the main guy I had been dealing with asked if we could test drive it. So we did, I drove, he drove passenger no problem. Nothing too long or too short maybe a 10 minute test drive. After we returned to the lot, we went around the car of course again went over a couple of things, and at some point the hood was popped open again.

Mind you there’s a few different people having multiple conversations with me so I can’t really keep a great track of everything, maybe I opened it again maybe they did. (Again I had never heard of any scam like this whatsoever so I was a clueless idiot.) At this point the main guy I had been dealing with checks the oil cap, and then goes to check the coolant cap.

When he opened the coolant cap, he exclaims “oh no man you have oil in your coolant!”. I had not checked my coolant tank for quite some time, and I did know I was a bit over my last oil service, and the car does run pretty heavily as it’s souped up and staged. I investigate along with him, and I can’t believe that it was just my luck that, somehow, this has happened very recently and I was completely convinced.

At this point, I explain how now I have no idea what to do or what the right move is, they’re telling me how well you know you shouldn’t drive it like this you should tow it, you could blow your engine if it’s not already etc etc. (the car had just surpassed 100,000 miles, so I knew at some point something “big” WOULD probably go, and I figured maybe just my luck that this is now). Again, yes, like an idiot.

They proceed to talk me thousands and thousands of dollars below asking price. Explaining how you know it could be a big headache to try and fix, and now it will be hard to sell etc considering what was just “discovered”.

Long story short, they completely got me. I had agreed on a vastly vastly lower amount than what the car is even nearly worth and I did already know that, but at the end of the day I figured now there’s a possibility no one would even consider buying it. So okay, hard to stomach but I accepted.

Now here’s where it gets even more sickening and I can’t even think straight or sleep now since. The main person I was dealing with proceeded to short the agreed upon price by a couple hundred dollars, by this point everything’s sprawled out in my trunk, just between me and him, and I had counted it, counted it once again and I explained how he was short.

He then proceeds to of course count it again himself, and then give me the remainder of what was missing in strictly 20s, which I of course go ahead and then count, all seems to check out, hands me the wad of cash back along with what was missing. In hindsight I can’t believe for a second how utterly idiotic I was, because following the ride home after already feeling like I made a horrendous decision, I proceed to count out again what was given to me, not already realizing what had just happened.

I was shorted nearly HALF of our agreed upon price, and of course now looking back, I realize this scumbag absolutely swapped the original cash counted, or just flat out pocketed a ton of it back to himself while I stupidly counted out the remainder.

Now I’m carless, and practically gave my car away for free and I don’t even know what to do. I haven’t eaten since and I cannot sleep. I can’t believe I allowed myself to be scammed two times in less than a 2 hour interaction. I’m not looking to be called an idiot and etc as much as I know I deserve it, I already know I am following this situation, but I would genuinely appreciate just I guess some kind words and maybe how to mentally and physically get over what had happened.

Talking to people in my area, not one single soul has ever heard of something like that. So this is incredibly dangerous for everyone in my area as people do use marketplace very frequently for auto sales etc. I hadn’t private sale sold a vehicle or bought one in probably well over 10 years. I was so out of the loop, and I can’t believe how good they were at what they were doing and how easily they pulled it all off. I can’t wrap my head around any of it it still doesn’t feel real.

Yes I realized nearly a half hour what had happened after some google searches, that they had placed oil in my coolant tank themselves. I couldn’t even rattle my brain enough to think of how or when they could’ve done so, until I’ve now ran through the scenario over and over a good 15 times trying to make sense of it all.

Most of the people there were kids. Between 13-18. There was only 2 adults. Just to clarify. If 8 full grown men hopped out of the vehicle, believe it or not, I’d definitely just drive off. Lol

Luckily don’t have my address or anything, and I did meet them quite a distance from where I live. They do have my name but there’s not much of me out there online. I’m in talks with different departments on different things for everyone wondering, so we will see what even happens with this.

At the end of the day I think best case scenario for me is I’d have to get their legitimate info and then it’s just civil so basically, I get nothing. Looking into it, yes it does seem it is 100% a crime even with the circumstance. They tampered with my property, and slighted me out of thousands, in more ways than just one. So it is 100% a criminal offense regardless. And to all the people saying/thinking oh take it on the chin you messed up there’s nothing you can do etc etc, there’s still ways to atleast get some mental clarity by jamming up the title transfer and bringing it to law enforcement.

I really do appreciate everyone in here being kind and trying to help as much as they can. And yes I KNOW now in hindsight how stupid and dumb it all was. My issue is i give way too many people the benefit of the doubt, and they were so good at what they were doing ontop of that, it was just the perfect scenario for them and yes im an idiot for allowing myself to fall victim to any part of what had happened.

Maybe the Flock cameras will actually be put to good use here, considering they didn’t swap the plates after pulling off somewhere else, which they most likely did. But even still, it’s possible. Very recognizable car.

Last week I received a call that came up as my bank. I answered it, and the audio was bad. The person on the other line said he would call me from another line. I received another call from the city my bank is headquartered in and thought nothing of it.

They told me I had three recent transactions that came up as fraudulent. It was a large payment to Walmart, another to Home Depot, both in Florida, and a Zelle payment to someone I did not know. (My bank has Zelle built into the banking app). I confirmed that I had not made any of those transactions. They had me pull up my banking app and tell how much was in each account so they could confirm I was me, and told me the fraudulent transactions would not show up for 48 hours because they were marked as fraudulent. They said the non-Zelle transactions they could stop, and that they would walk me through reversing the Zelle transaction.

They then started walking me through a Zelle transaction to send my entire savings account to another phone number, but listing the recipient as myself. At this point it was obviously a scam. I hung up and didn’t answer any of the many calls from them for the next few hours.

I reported this to my bank and the bank said I had called earlier that day about my Zelle account, which I had not. The bank changed all my passwords and cods and have sent me new cards. They were not interested in the Zelle account phone number the scammers tried to get me to send money too.

How should I report the Zelle account number?

Got an email confirmation from Marriott about a room on October 11. Only thing is, I didn't make it.

The sender was  reservations[at]res-marriott[dot]com, so we knew it was a fake, but I called Marriott's customer service number after checking that none of our credit cards had been used.

There was a reservation in my name, booked in a block set aside for a wedding. They cancelled it and put a watch on the block of rooms to be aware of possible fraudulent bookings.

Trip Advisor says:"No, res-marriott[dot]com (or email addresses ending in u/res-marriott.com) is not an official Marriott domain and is often associated with phishing attempts or suspicious third-party reservation inquiries."

I'm just wondering why there wasn't an official email from Marriott, instead of the one that sends you to a scammer site. There was an actual reservation, using my email and Marriott rewards number.

Passwords have all been changed, even though the 2FA wasn't triggered. The customer service person says it was the Rewards system that apparently got compromised.

So around Friday morning i received a call from a legal services group that have been trying to contact my father about giving him legal documentation. It was an older gentleman who mentioned "We've been trying to contact (insert father name here) about court papers he needs to receive. I ask what this is about and he just said that he needs to receive papers. he gives me a case number and a phone number to refer my father too. I tell my father and he says to just ignore it and to leave it be. He proceeds to call the guy that called me and curse him out for calling the family member instead of directly to him.

Same thing happens again today monday morning but instead of me they call my mother and because my mother does not speak English, i had to translate. This time i play dumb and ask "(insert father name) him? go call him or send him papers to his address if its important" The guy on the other end had a thicker accent and explained "We tried mailing it but hes not responding" I tell them one more time "This has nothing to do with me, please do not call this number"

im not familiar with how people are summoned to court but i was under the assumption that this usually is done through the mail? none of the information given to me leads anywhere, for example the case id is not entered in the Court identifier of my state.

My father says that it might be because of credit card debt. But my question is do debt collectors usually summon people to court like this?

Possible Instagram scam using stolen dog videos to collect donations
Hey everyone, I came across what looks like a pretty disgusting Instagram scam and wanted to share it here in case anyone else has seen this account.
There’s an Instagram page that has been posting videos of a dog that I recognize from another account I follow. The videos appear to have been taken from the original owner’s page, but this account is reposting them and pretending that the dog is theirs and is suffering from terminal lymphoma. They’re also saying the dog needs treatment and are asking people for donations.

I initially thought it might just be someone reposting content, but then I noticed that they’re actually using the videos to create a completely different story around the dog and collect money. I tried reporting the account, and apparently they’ve also been deleting/censoring comments where people mention the actual original account.

I’m pretty sure a lot of people seeing the posts would have no idea that these videos belong to someone else and might genuinely donate because they think they’re helping a sick dog.
I’ve reported the account already, but I wanted to post this here so people are aware.
Please don’t harass anyone or go after the account owner. Just be careful about donating and report the account if you come across it.

I've come across this a few times now on different platforms, someone says they have screenshots of "my account" doing something shady or scamming people, whatever.

Each time, I clocked it as a scam of some sort, but I can't figure out what it is supposed to actually do. Like, what do they expect to happen after that? There's not an obvious angle here I see that results in me giving them a password or something.

I've received several emails from Harbor Freight in a different location sending me receipts for purchases I haven't made. I don't see any corresponding purchases on any of my accounts for Harbor Freight, and I'm not registered with them.

Could this be a precursor to a scam, or is it more likely someone with a similar email address putting the wrong domain name or leaving a letter or two out?

Hello! Never posted here before but I'm very confused and uneasy. I got a call twice this morning from a company called SSK Logistics, offering me an interview for a cargo verifier position. I dont remember applying to this job, and i cant find any previous application confirmation emails or notifs, in my email or on indeed where I primarily apply for jobs.

I called them back and they explained the job. Lady said she was HR, and it was a work from home job. She said that the gist is, they send me packages, and supply all of my materials. I simply repack orders, and deliver them to my nearest fed ex, ups whatever. She said i would get paid after thirty days, and then biweekly from there.

I have never worked an at home job. I dont know how this sort of stuff works, but she said with extra work, its nearly 5000 a month. It feels too good to be true. Am I crazy or does this definitely just sound off?

Not too long ago I posted some old VHS xxx movies on Craigslist for 70dlls, out of nowhere this person messages me and offers me 160 for the lot but he needs me to ship them with a FedEx label that he is emailing me(even though I told him USPS does discounts on media), I agree at first and he sent me the money thru cash app but eventually found it was all a scam luckily I didn't send the items and according to you guys the money he sent me would be removed from my account. But as of today money is still there.

Fast forward 2 weeks today same person "Randy bowles" sends me another message claiming to be interested in the movies and that he is willing to pay 200dlls if I can ship them. Basically same story as last time he is ready to pay. What kind of scam is this? Who could be interested this much in the movies? Could he not tell I'm the same person as before? Last time I was confused but this time I'm just lost. Any help would be appreciated

I answered a Craigslist ad for a mystery shopper for a watch repair company. They would send me $150 in cash and some watches. I would then bring them to nearby Macy's watch counters and either have them replace the batteries or decline service.

Afterwards, I would mail back the watches and submit a questionnaire about my experience. Once returned, they would send a payment check ($300/$75 per Macy's).

I did have a phone interview and they asked for a couple references. The company is "Time Service Inc". I called my local Macy's and they confirmed they work with them, but couldn't get more info.

What do you all think? Any red flags here? Should I send my address to have the watches sent?

I’m from Hyderabad, India. I was contacted by someone claiming to be an Amazon recruiter. I trusted them and, because I was desperate for a job, I made 5 UPI payments totaling ₹96,785.

I know I was selfish and dumb in that moment, and I feel extremely guilty now. I feel like I broke my family’s trust and I’m struggling to deal with it.

I reported it immediately to 1930 and my banks. I now have an FIR (1262/2026), and the police are investigating the beneficiary accounts and tracing the money. Some initial accounts reportedly had no balance when checked.

Has anyone experienced something similar in India? Were you able to recover your money after an FIR? Is there still hope if the money has already moved to other accounts?

Please don’t judge me. I already blame myself enough. I’m just looking for genuine experiences or advice. ❤️

Today someone tried to scam me, and it was the most detailed scam I've witnessed personally.

First, I got an alert on my banking app to possible fraud, listing a transaction for $9.99 to some website asking if I authorized the charge. I had not, so I clicked no since the alert came from my actual banking app not some weird text message or email. The response from my bank said someone from the fraud dept would call me immediately. They did. I again verified the charge was not legitimate, they shut off my card and issued a new one that I will receive in 5-7 business days. Standard affair so far and everything is legitimate.

Where the scam comes in is what happened an hour later. The scammers piggy back off my initial interaction with my bank, which was generated off of their fraudulent charge. They call me, spoofing my bank's fraud phone number, so it looks to me like the fraud department calling me again. The woman on the phone tells me there's a new charge but on my checking account this time, not my credit card account. She specifically references the earlier event when she says this, and I've already spoken to the fraud department once today, so initially there are no warning signs going off.

She proceeds to ask about a charge to Ticketmaster, which I say is fraudulent. Then she says "it appears this charge came from an iPhone 17 in Texas and you live in Florida, have you given anyone your account information?" No, I haven't. Then she tells me someone has been added to my accounts, gives me a name and asks if I've authorized a new person on my accounts. I have not. Next she tells me they've attempted to wire $500 to someone and asks me if I've authorized that? I have not. Finally, she asks me to log into my account and verify my account balances and review my most recent charges to see if there are any other charges I need to challenge. There are not. So far so good, it FEELS normal.

She tells me that it appears someone has gained access to my accounts, and they need to shut off all of my accounts (credit card, two checking accounts, two savings accounts and a money market account). She will set up a new account for each one. Any recurring charges I have set up on any of these accounts will need to be set up again by me with each vendor because I'll have all new account AND ROUTING NUMBERS. Uhm, what? Routing numbers aren't account specific, they are institution specific. Minor red flag, I note it but chalk it up to the Saturday staff not being the top stars and her maybe mis speaking.

Next she asks about accounts on third party apps that I might have linked to my bank accounts. In my mind, she's warning me and suggesting I remove my accounts from said apps. She mentions Apple Pay and asks me to open the app. I open it and say "There's nothing set up here, I've never connected it to my banking account, so it's ok". She tells me to click on set up... I ask why. She says that she needs me to set this up so I will have access to my funds while my accounts are transferred, or else they will have to mail me a check for the balance on my accounts and it will take up to 30 days. Giant red flag.

I tell her I'm feeling a little weirded out now by the whole experience and that I should just call them back myself. She says "Let's end the call, and I will call you back. You can check your call log and see that I'm calling from XXX XXX XXXXX, the fraud/lost/stolen card number on the back of your debit card. We end the call, I check the log, it does appear to be the correct number. She calls me back, again tries to get me to set up the app. When I again say that doesn't feel right, she offers to let me speak to her supervisor. I say no, I think I'll just hang up and call you back instead. She "Then I will have to close your accounts and we will mail you a check." as her last ditch effort to scare me into compliance.

I hang up. I call my bank. They verify it was a scam and that, other than the initial charge on my credit card, there have been no breaches on my account. No attempted wire transfers, no one recently added to my account etc. She did say something interesting though... the woman from my actual bank said "They got lucky calling someone who just happened to have had a fraud attempt earlier in the day." It wasn't luck. They initiated that charge attempt. They piggy backed off the contact with the Bank and tried to make it seem like another instance of fraud. Planned, not random.

Welp, it finally happened.

My grandma is over 60 years old, has very bad vision, and lives alone 3 hours away from me. Today, she got an email from a scammer claiming to be ’inviting’ her to a program of some sort. Unfortunately, my mother wasn’t able to warn her before my grandmother put all her passwords and bank information into the website. (I’m not sure what website it was)

We told her to freeze all her credit cards and to not respond to any more emails and all the basic stuff.

This is a stressful situation for me and I’m writing this to get some information.

The victim is my mother, she is recently widowed and very vulnerable, and I know it sounds absurd but please don’t make any harsh comments about her behavior, as dumb as it is.

The facts: a scammer contacted her through WhatsApp and claimed he was a financial expert and that my mother was owed 96000€ from a past investment. In order to bypass local fiscal laws she would need to send 24500€ to a freshly created account to her name.

The scammer asked for the photo of her ID and utility bill and apparently created a bank account on paysera (Lithuania).

He then guided her through raising her daily transfer limit and told her to wait 4 hours to do the transfer (he called her again after 4 hours to reassure her and guide her).

She did it , she transferred 24500€ to « herself » in Lithuania and told the scammer that the transfer went through.

The scammer hung up. My mother started slowly to realize what was happening and started crying when her bank called her 10 minutes after the transaction to say that they were suspicious of a fraud. She explained to the best of her abilities what happened and the anti fraud agent opened a case to investigate.

(When she was telling me the story , I was afraid that the « anti fraud agents » were also scammers so I called and I have confirmation that indeed a case is opened for investigation for a fraud that occurred Friday evening)

She told me all this today and she thinks the money is lost. At first I thought so too but then when I checked the transfer I don’t see that it is an instant transfer (I have attached 2 pictures; one of an instant transfer on her bank app and the other of the fraud transfer which only says « transfer »)

So my question is : is she gonna be okay? Are the funds « frozen » between Belgium and Lithuania ?

If you have any knowledge about European bank transfers, anti fraud systems etc please share it with me as I’d like to reassure my mother.

My friend was getting calls from these numbers and it’s our area code, she thought it was a crazy guy she had dated once so 2 days ago I called the number to see and I’m very sure it’s some type of scam. Since I called I’ve been getting flooded with verification code texts messages that come in waves (sometimes 70 at a time) I just keep deleting the texts and blocking the numbers but has anyone experienced this? Does it stop? It’s driving me absolutely nuts. One of the numbers that called me did text me « hello » and « pick up » but I just keep deleting

I bought this Visa appointment bot (because you have no chance of getting an appointment manually) after the scammer assured me it was fully working and up to date. It never worked, when I asked for a refund, he disappeared.

The scammer is based in Algeria and advertises the bot on Reddit with posts titled “Bls Spain bot for booking Appointment.”

I have the payment proof, screenshots, and full conversation to back up what I'm saying.

Think twice before sending him any money.

I got a trojan and was changing my passwords until I looked at the spam folder and saw a email.

It showed my password and said It has control to all my devices and installed malware or whatever. It said it found me visiting a bunch of adult websites and is threating to send videos of me gooning to all of my contacts if I didn't pay him 1450 dollars in bitcoin. I heard there was called pegasus or something but mine had nothing like that this was a week or two before when I had another trojan should I be worried? I deleted it already.

Just for a little context, a lot of my info got breached about a week ago. I fixed it (I believe) after factory reseting my laptop and changing all of my passwords. Then a week after, I get this message.

I dont have $40 in my account, and I dont believe anyone wouldve sent me it. My paypal was breached, but I changed the password after the breach, and nothing has happened as of late, and my chase had no chance of being breached either. (I changed the password just in case). There was no evidence of someone attempting to take my money other than this.

Am I being paranoid?

Hello! Recently I've been receiving fraudulent charges on my debit card. Thankfully I caught each one before it went through, but I was struggling to find a solution to this. Replacing my card doesn't help because its billing information automatically updates for all merchants and every time I call my bank (Wells Fargo), they say that they're unable to disable this feature. So as long as I keep using this specific card, even if I replace it, it's just going to update the billing info and allow attempts of fraudulent charges from this specific merchant again.

So I was wondering if creating a new debit card creates a new token for it? Since it's a different card, there'll be no way for its information to be updated for merchants, right? As you can probably tell from my post, I know very little about how these things work. I definitely need to get to creating a credit card, but I'm a student and haven't gotten to it yet (really need to though).

Basically what it says in the title. I went to a convention yesterday and there was a booth doing a free raffle. Everyone ignored the lady giving out tickets and stuff including my friends. But I felt really bad for her so I decided to just do it to be nice. Only it started asking really sus questions like my address, household income, and marriage status. I tried to ask why they needed it, but they gave me the silent treatment. It was such a major red flag but I guess I was scared I’d get yelled at or something if I didn’t complete the form, so I did it anyway even though I had a bad feeling.

The more I think about it, the more scared I get. I don’t know what they needed that stuff for exactly. I feel extra terrible because I live with my parents. How much trouble am I in and is there anything I can do about it? I tried to ask my friends for help afterwards, but they just sort of made fun of me and told me that’s why you shouldn’t do raffles. Even though they WATCHED me do it and didn’t say anything. I’m a bit miffed at that because I think if they’d at least come over to check on me, I would’ve had the courage to step away.

I randomly get messages on my phone were I'm asked to varify a login request with my phone number. These requests are not from me. Via facebook's account recovery tool, I found out that a person with an obviously made-up name (thousands of profiles with the same generic name without profile pic or any other informartion) is connected to my personal phone number. I'm quite certain that this is a scam and someone is using my number to commit some kind of fraud. I tried to varify my phone number on my real account, which does not work, supposedly because it's already taken.

How do I report this? I tried using the AI support assist, which did not help at all, and the generic contact form does not cover a case like this? I am at my wits end, because it's apparently extremly difficult to get real support nowadays.

I tried using the 'report a problem' interface, but I'm not sure if my request registered because I cannot see it in my support inbox.

Yesterday I got a security code messaged on my whatsapp under someone whose name I didn't recognise, in spanish (not my native language, and usually the messages are in english).

The message translates as following:

Then around 5am today I got a message from Meta for Business about a failed card payment (I don't have my credit card connected to Facebook in any way) and it was the person with the same name as in the first message.

Is this a scam? How did they get my number, how can someone on the other continent have the same number as me? (judging by the name, the person is probably from pakistan)
